Hey guys, Feforfar here.
The question I would like answered is ''How to paint a rust effect"?
I have been talking to alot of my teachers and friends that were into painting figures
and they also have no idea how to paint a rust effect, so does anyone know how to paint a rust effect?
I am actually trying to paint it on my Soul Grinder, thought that might be a little bit of help.
And for the people that have dealt with me in the past, I have changed and REALLY listening to what
people have to say now.
Feforfar

If you can spare a bit cash you could always get hold of a tamiya weathering master, there are a few different ones, the one you would want comes with rust, gun metal and silver.
there a pretty niffty piece of kit for your weathering needs. Automatically Appended Next Post: this is kinda an example of a similar product

There are many different options really.
You can use paint exclusively, by stippling/drybrushing a ruddy brown/orange colour where you want the rust to be applied.
You can also invest in weathering pigments and apply the rust effect that way (they are a little too complex to explain and it is definitely worth either experimenting or checking tutorials).

Use the forum search function. There are several good tutorials hanging around. Start out with the "Painting and Modeling Tutorials" forum.
There are weathering tips and tricks all over, if you look.

I can really recommend the rust pigments from MIG if you consider that as an option. They have dark/standard and light and mixing some different pigments gives a quite nice result. You can also use them with thinner to produce some streaking effects and so on.

I was trying to work out how to paint rust too. Aparently "Reaper master series - rust brown" is the best for a rust effect. Although I have never used it :/

+1 on MIG weathering powders. It's the most time efficient way to represent rust while looking realistic.
Don't bother buying the FW weathering powders, I have some and they are just rebranded versions of MIG powders in smaller bottles.

Rust actually looks a bit different depending on the climate and such. The way I paint mine is more of a desert high heat no humidity type place, so its really orange and red. The FlashGit on the far left is actually finished as far as rust, the rest were before I added the bits of red, but you can see the differences and maybe youll like them. (you can zoom in more on the pic BTW)
They way I do it, is I base black and then do a heavy drybrush of boltgun metal. Then I water down blazing orange considerably but not to the point of being a wash, and apply it over the whole area Im rusting. Then immediately Ill take a paper towel to it to soak up the majority of the paint, this leaves it in/near recesses and adds a subtle orange hue to the metal. After that, I stipple red where ever I like to add some flavor and character to the rust.

So far from all the posts, the rust are done with mix of brown + orange.
The OP should just buy the 2 colors and mix them to his preference. Since all the pics of rust so far all do look like rust, just different shades.

A better question to the OP would be what kind of rust he/she wants. Supreficial surface rust? The bright kind that shows up overnight in a wet area? Old rust, still only on the surface, but 'grown' so that it's centimetres thick in places? Spot rust, the kind that destroys integrity, and causes critical parts to fail? Or maybe even the bubbly rust that forms under a loose layer of paint?
For some, all you need is a drybrush of the appropriate shade. For others, you'd need weathering powders of the proper grit. For the most extreme, damaging forms of rust, you'd need to actually sculpt the model, using a pin or needle to put pockmarks on the surface, or 'improperly' applying a decal so there'd be a bubble under the surface, before painting over it.
One thing to consider, though, is that some rust isn't just Red and Orange, but can have other, complimentary colors in it too, like purples and greens. Look up Rust Textures online, and you'll get a good spread.

the method i am using for my nurgle Warriors of Chaos is
1) black prime
2) paint boltgun metal
3) (lightly) sponge on a mix of of brown and tin bitz
4) add orange and a little more tin to the mix and lightly sponge on
5) tidy it up a little with whatever you want
if you want a picture i can try and take one, not sure how good the picture would be.

I start with a yellow/tan base, then a heavy dry brush of a copper/metallic color. After that I do a dry brush of a bright orange, then a light dry brush of brown to soften up the orange. The trick is letting some of the metallic color show through, so its still a little shiny. My mix comes out very bright and yellowy but I really like it.

First, you paint the model with Scorched brown, then drybrush it with Vermin brown, and lastly stipple with Blazing orange. Then you paint the mimiature.
