Subject: Ultramarine Honorguard Counts As GK (Updated April 22 with Request for Help)
So I am doing a dreaded "counts as" army of Grey Knights as Ultramarine Honor Guard. I will be running Draigo as the Chapter Champion wearing Heresy Era TDA (Scribor's Spartan Hero with icon's removed), Paladins as TDA Honorguard, Purifiers/PAGK as regular Honorguard, and a single DK as Calgar (after getting punked by the Swarmlord, he decided he needed better armor). This is what I am thinking of going with for my paint scheme for the Paladins:
Pretty basic... lots of blue, red, and gold. I am trying to figure out a good way of doing cloaks for them, and might have a method that will work. I will post a pic once it's done.

I went with gold heads to match the normal Honor Guard paint schemes and red shoulders to differentiate them from normal 1st Company Vets. Should I stick to a more traditional scheme instead?

Well, there's nothing wrong with adding unorthodox elements to your collection, obviously. However, the more unorthodox elements you add to what is fluff-wise the most orthodox of all chapters, the less they'll 'click' as Ultramarines in the eye of the beholder.
Right now I'm looking at an Ultramarine with unorthodox equipment, an unorthodox paint scheme, using an unorthodox model, and with little in the way of Ultramarines heraldry. It needs more Ultramarine-ness to make it register as a Smurf; maybe the wider army will present a context for it, but as it stands it has the appearance of something different.
Some suggestions: file away some of the GK/Inquisitorial icons and replace with U symbols, and maybe get some Honour Guard heads to swap out the GK heads (sure you'll find Marine collectors who'll trade something for the GK heads).
I'm an old school Behemoth collector and like the background you're aiming for here. Re Calgar-mobile - seen the Heresy Era Dreadnought from FW yet?
Yeah, I am about to do some freehanding of Ultra symbols on the models and for future models I am greenstuffing an Ultra symbol around the GK book symbol and putting some greenstuff in the book spine to make it into a flat surface for a freehand. Admittedly, my freehanding/greenstuffing skills are terrible, but I think they will have the desired effect, especially when combined with my Ultramarine Dreads and Transports.

Okay, so that Calgar conversion made me SQUEEEEE far too much for polite company.
And your GS work has definitely made that GK look a lot more 'codex'. I'm totally buzzing with ideas now for my First Tyrannic War era Ultramarines 1st Company
So I finally finished up enough models for a 1500 Army. The army itself is
Draigo (Chapter Champ)
5 Pallies with BHood Banner
3 Squads of GKSS with Pysbacks
2 Pysfelmen
Dreadknight (Calgar)
Here are the updated pics (Most are pretty terrible):

After seeing the honor guard with the rest of the army, I have to say they look great and fit in perfectly. I really like the GK helmets, I am using some in my own SM army for the specials. They have an heroic look to them that I find very much in character for Astartes.
I love the Spartan character, he is in line with the pseudo greco-roman background that the Ultras have. Nice work. I look forward to seeing more.

I'm subbing this thread. The conversions are great the GS does help it say Smurf to me. And Mecha Calgar is a win. I'm also adding these pics to my "Other codexes Ultras wish they were in" collection right next to the blue Baal Pred.

Thanks for all the feedback! For my 2K list I add Purifiers to the army, so I will possibly recreate the winged helms from the original HG Models (three of which are acting as wound counters on Calgars base). Interceptors are another future addition and will use Sang Guard models (sans wings of course).

I tried to GS some winged helms but didn't care for the results, so i am going to stick with the Spartan look. I finished modelling 4 more PA Honorguard and now need to paint a batch of 10 plus another four Terminators to finish off my 2K list. Here are some terrible pics of the updated models:

I actually think the PC synergizes well with the mindstrikes on the one turn it survives...

I like the idea !
(any non grey GK gets a thumb up anyway!)
They look way cool, but I would have to agree on the 'codex' aspect: I would have them with white shoulders / helmets. I would also replace the golden border of the regular marines by a white one - when it comes down to smurfs and heraldry, they are not a "funky" chapters.
The stormchicken looks very good. I'd have to agree on the PC choice. If you use the GK codex, go TLAC.
I love the fact you used regular shoulderpads instead of the GK ones on the right pads. Left pads, GK book in the omega sign = a lot of win.
I like the conversions a lot, and the painting is clean. I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the honor guard come out, what with the chains everywhere.
So, bear with me... but this...
Out of all the cool conversions and the like... WHY do these guys have ballpoint pen caps in place of Psywhatsits?

Thanks for the comments! I think that after the tournament I may give the Pallies a bath in Pinesol and try them again. They were the first models I did, so have the least conversions and kind of a funky color scheme. I will probably redo them with Spartan helms and cloaks and a more conventional color-scheme... and something besides pen caps for Pyscannons!
(Those were basically stopgaps until I got better at converting or broke down and bought the smexy plastic GKTs.)

Hahaha... alright. I just wanted to check. I didn't want to believe you thought that looked acceptable. I could tell by your other work that you could definitely do better.

My wife and I spent the week working on a display board for the army. It was our first adventure with cutting foam and I am pretty happy with how it turned out. I also took a few minutes and painted up part of my Honoured Imperium set, and I think they will look good with the board and on my table. I apologize that the pics from my phone are not very clear.

Normally I'm against GK Count as Armies (which have become all too common), but I would gladly play against this army. These guys have a great "spartan" look.

I finally was able to get my hands on one of the plastic GKT kits, so I am going to replace the Pallies with more appropriate looking ones. I am going to use metal crux's on the appropriate shoulder and then use the GKT ones without the Book/Sword on the other side. Any other suggestions for making them look more "Ultramarine/Spartan"? Should I paint them with a 1st Company scheme or using a similar scheme to the power-armor Honorguard?
