I did the same thing and given their size, I don't think they would look odd for display. However, for gameplay purposes when given the choice between images of the prototype or the final printed rulebook, I'm going to side with the latter as being the authority. That there are 6 monsters that would use the 50mm base (i.e. - not the Phoenix) and 6 50mm bases is also a sign that this is the case.
The red herring is the King's Men we got as bonuses since I at least didn't get 5 50mm bases for them.

Nor did I. I suppose it makes more sense for them to be large since it allows more base contact points for survivor attacks, It just seemed odd to me to put a King's Hand on that giant base

That image also has the Phoenix on a 50mm base, so it's not necessarily reliable.
I found a video from the preview at GenCon which shows the King's Man and The Hand in a quick view. They're on 50mm bases:
Around the 41:20 mark in this video:

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents on the models as i've put together a variety so far.
As a general rule before getting into specifics, i'm pleased with the mold lines or lack thereof. I haven't found many and those I did see were very easily cleaned up.
Most disappointing was the White Lion. I like the overall feel of it, it's a great 'creepy' lion-ish monster, but have some issues with the pieces. It would have taken more work and patience than I had at the time to fix the seams around its face, and the rear pieces simply cannot be put together together without leaving large gaps, some in visible places. Good news is the gaps will be easy to fix with green stuff later (although I do not think I am going to worry about green stuffing the gap through the reproductive bits on the bottom).
The Twilight Knight went together easily and looks good. The definition and general quality is lower than everything else I've gotten, which is odd. I seem to recall that this was his first plastic 'test' piece so maybe that explains it.
I thought the pinup regeneration suit would have awfully obvious gaps, given the skintight nature of the suit itself, but was pleasantly surprised. It also introduced me to the fact that the sprue designers are not afraid to break things into itty bitty pieces. Her head / hair were separate, but the sculpt and careful assembly hides the seam well. A seam I expected to be awful - right between her butt cheeks and along part of her back - actually is invisible once assembled. Minor seams can be found in the front of the model - again, many tiny pieces - but overall this was the first mini that I was really happy with how it looked.
Lastly, the Butcher. Ye gods the tiny pieces. One piece of advice to those of you who haven't put him together yet - build and attach the legs to him before putting his 2-part cloak on. My ideal order, in hindsight, would be attaching the legs, then the multiple itty-bitty shoulderguard bits, then the cloak pieces, the arms, and the 3 head bits. I was tremendously impressed with the detail on the pieces and with how well this one went together. A few seams are visible on the final product but nothing a paintjob can't cover. The shoulderguard and head, while both being made of some pretty darned tiny bits, are worth the effort to get juuust right. Once finished he is a real mean looking figure with tons of detail and he looks spectacular whether you're looking at him from table height or right up close. He has gotten me really excited to work on more of the models.
Overall after those assemblies and looking through the sprues I'm very happy with what I got. The game itself looks like a lot of fun once I have a chance to get to it, but really the modeling aspect alone is going to give me hours and hours of enjoyment.

Have to agree. I put the shoulder and head on before attaching the cloak on the Butcher, and he came out great.
I'm having issues with the base survivors having large gaps. I also tried putting them on the stone face bases without pinning, which was foolish.

Probably assembled about a dozen of the models and did reasonably well I think. I had to refer to images online for some to get an idea of where parts went but other than that they go together pretty well.
Then I looked at the Phoenix and even though I have two of them, this was my reaction to doing it without directions:
So props for getting through it spiralingcadaver!
Overall I'm quite happy with what I've gotten and I actually want more armor kits. Granted, some of that enthusiasm may diminish when I finally get all the extras I did order... /pine for Wave 1 some more

Wait until you get to the Antelope. Automatically Appended Next Post: This could be the most addictive boardgame I've ever played. I find myself strategizing when not playing and I'm spending a lot more time playing it than I ever thought I would. It's nice to see how much of the past 3 years Poots has put into playtesting.

Pretty close, these bases are all latex molds w/ plaster- broke them up a bit. Link.
I needed to fix a fair number of noses since they're tiny, but didn't really care if a lot looked broken since they're stone, etc.
I'm also sculpting a full terrain set of my own- have a head and a few plates of faces... if it goes well, I already like the game enough that I'd move on to a table.

I saw a comment somewhere (Earlier in this topic? Facebook?) that filing or clipping down the nose where you want the foot really helps.

The ship arrived on the 24th,
but reading between the lines of Adams recent comments it seems like customs may have decided it needs a more detailed look than the shipments to the US or Canada got (sigh) so I'd imagine it will be a few weeks more before the stuff hits the shipping company

Thanks, Cincy- feel free! if you've got any advice on how to get those nose bubbles out, I'm all ears, though- that's the only part I was really having trouble with...

Oh, and yeah, decided I like things enough that I'm also interested in the few expansions I didn't claim- anyone with a gorm, tree, or lion god, I'm interested in trading. Maybe pinups, too.

This game is exceptionally unforgiving if you make a mistake (or just have a string of bad luck), but also requires you to capitalize on every lucky roll the game gives you. I'm finding it extremely difficult to keep from taking the periodic mulligan.

The high difficulty is kind of what I had anticipated. I'm wondering to what extent I should "easy mode" the game. The business of creating new settlements & characters will get old if we don't have electronic sheets.
Hint, hint, Adam.

We've instituted a house rule after a string of bad luck involved 9 of our survivors dying to random events over 2 or 3 years.
You can now spend all survival (min 2) to prevent death to random event.
It means that new survivors and returning ones stretched to their limit still die, but it does prevent that survivor with 5 survival from coming back from a good fight and then stubbing his toe to death on a 1 or whatever.
So far, it's felt like a good compromise where things are lethal, but, like in combat, you have a chance to "dodge" it.

The big point to the game is that survivors are very mortal. Your 'lives' are the people within the settlement. Sure you can have a single survivor and get really attached to them, but your settlement is what is meant to go on.
Plus, your items carry over between characters (barring special circumstances). Sometimes, if you become unreasonably crippled, it's better to retire and just make another character from the "life pool". Also form tons of babbies when you can.

Yeah, we've definitely learned to consider population as a resource, but going through a run of losing 2 survivors to actual fights but 9 to random events was pretty frustrating. We were doing decently well, except the part where we couldn't maintain a population because of random.

Yes, thank you for that electronic survivor sheet.
I finished painting up my Starting survivors. I decided to go with a clean look on the base, to fit the "less is more" overall look of the game. I added the colors to differentiate among the players, in classic board game style.
