I have noticed that flock (the green sawdust-type stuff) does not appear to be in common usage anymore. I must admit I think it looks rather artificial, but does anyone here like it?

By the way, rubberized horse hair coated with flock makes quite convincing foliage-something I learned from How to make wargames terrain.

I usually take flock, static grass and and the basing dirt/ballast and mix it alllll up. I don't like wasting excessive ammounts of time basing my models, and its a cheap/quick way of getting a decent looking base.

The other thing I use flock for is moss. I dont know what else to use, but it's the only thing I have found so far that makes convincing moss growing on a building. (of course, I use some other stuff to point out excessive growth, but the little bit creeping across stonework... flock looks to do the trick)

Now and again I'll toss it into my paint too for texturing purposes, like dirt, or rust, etc...

I use green grass flock on some of my minis, as I feel it helps give them a nice finished look.

However, some I dont want the "grass field" look, so I give them whatevers proper...plain black base, dirt, etc.

I personally only base my HQ units, and even then only to make them stand out. So I never use flock, usually its just painted sand, and a little static grass.

I used to use flock, but got out of the habit. I did for my first batch of Space Marines:

But then did Necrons. No flock for my Necrons, since I imagine they exude a alien deathscape, similar to the Zerg - prime black, drybrush successive layers of lighter grey, with some crystals to breakup the monotony:

After that I started doing the same for my other bases, but different tones - sand, prime black, paint dark brown, drybrush up to Kommando Khaki, then wash with Devlan Mud:

and at that point, decided flock just looked too fake, unless you're going all out with a swamp theme or something.

I think it can look OK, but you need to commit to having at least 2 or 3 shades and some foliage. I decided I like barren rocks better.

Having been around since 2nd edition, all I can say is thank the stars that that green flock fell out of favour, it looked awful.

All my 2nd ed orks look like they are fighting on lime green astroturf!

I have a big jar of the stuff left over, the good news is it can still be put to use (as it is technically dyed sawdust, it can be used in doubleT's mud recipie over at his DKoK blog) and painted over, but it looks too artificial to be used any more

i know right? I get tempted now and again to do a manicured garden table, but realise how it really ought to be overgrown, burnt out and destroyed already... hahahaha

I admit, I think a base covered soley in green flock looks awful. That is unless you were trying to achieve that whole astro turf look.

The way I see it, flock is just another tool and just like static grass and ballist its not a one stop solution to all your basing woes. Combined with other things you can achieve some really interesting and impressive results, it all depends on how much effort and creativity you want to put into it.. Personally I use flock to accent other details such as rocks and trees and even ruins. It makes for really convincing moss or even vines.

Less is more, and all that jazz.

I gave up on flock after discovering how badly it fades in even very little sunlight. I'm now trying out this Vallejo basing material called black lava. Basically black sand it covers very well and is very gritty. Strange thing is that it is odourless when wet but stinks when dry! A very devious product.

I used green grass flock on my chaos marines... I didn't like the result much, but it's a lot better than plain black/brown bases. I won't flock any of my other armies, but I'll keep it up if I decide to expand the chaos army.

For my new Skaven army, I've ordered some scenic bases for the more expensive units (stormvermin, night/gutter runners, lords & heroes etc.) and I'll make my own rock covered bases for the rest as soon as I buy the right glue for the job. I've already been up at a local quarry to pick up some nice looking rock.

I can remember getting some flock that was like some sponge that had been painted green then shredded....those were dark times indeed....

I prefer static grass to flocking. In fact, i only use flocking on large terrain pieces now. I've recently started buying Tuft from The Army Painter. I have been leaning more towards the tuft now. Although there are times when the static grass looks/works better.

Coolyo, snow doesn't really count, but it was worth bringing it up.

Using flock to make moss sounds a good idea. I might try that. On the subject of things to use for bases, if you want to add an alien, exotic feeling to bases/terrain, such as on jungle worlds, I reccomend using lichen. It's available from modelling stores, and it looks really effective. I use it for basing my Tyranids-obviously not on its own, as that would look silly.

I use it mainly on terrain pieces, my bases are either a homebrew mix of stuff I've gathered over the years or (more recently) crushed rock painted black and then drybrushed Ash Gray.
