Greetings from southern Texas. I'm brand new to WH40K and tabletop gaming in general, having recently been introduced to the hobby by two friends at work (Dark Eldar and Imperial Guard players). I'm currently vacillating between starting a Space Wolves army or a Chaos Space Marines/Renegades army. Recommendations are welcome, of course. Happy gaming to you.

Hi,

Hey
Welcome to Dakka!
As far as the army goes, it's your choice. Read through some of the fluff and check out what models appeal to you most (visually). Its a lot easier to stay enthusiastic about an army you like for these reasons, rather than an army you only like because it's competitive. When new codecies/editions come out you might find your ultra competitive face-breaking list isn't as great any more, and if you only like your army because its "good" (like some SW players do ), you may get disenchanted with the game if the army gets nerfed.

Yeah, that's definitely why I want to go with either SW (space vikings!) or CSM/Renegades (spiky evil!). My only concern is that I don't want to pick an army that is over-represented in WH40K, but I think those two armies are pretty popular.

Thanks, guys.

On the subject of my army, I guess I could split the difference and make a Chaos Wolves army. But how fluff-breaking is this? And which rule set would I use, SW or CSM?

Welcome to Dakka Dakka!

You could always start a Red Corsair army and include traitor Space Wolves if you want to stay fluffy and use models from both.

I'll be looking forward to seeing your army. Good luck!

Thanks, Corsair. I may just stick to vanilla Space Wolves for my first go, as I have virtually no experience with conversions/painting/etc. Based on the amazing work I've seen around this forum, my expectations bar has certainly been raised. Which reminds me, do you accept sculpting/conversion commissions as your free time allows, or do you sell casts of your previous minis? I'm a big fan of your female marines!

Don't raise your expectation bar too high too soon though. Start slow and take the time to enjoy learning the process as you go .

And most importantly don't forget to play the game! It's been way too long since I actually played a game of 40k

I don't do personal sculpting commissions as I don't think they are worth the cost($350+ per figure) for an individual gamer.

I am working on getting the female marines cast; hopefully by the end of summer.

The Space elf stuff are work for Chapterhouse Studio and will be available for purchase from them.

The rest are my own personal projects, which I may cast and sell if there are enough interest once they are done.

Cheers!

Sorry, due to my WH40K noob status, I'm not quite sure what that means, but I'm sure I'll figure it out. Thanks for the advice.

Wow, those are pricey. But the quality is so good, I'm not surprised. Please keep us posted on the casts, then. Do you plan to sell through a third party?

Traitor Wolves sound cool. get a bunch of marauder heads, I think they will help (or marauders in general to count as barbaric tribesmen/guardsmen).

Good luck and feel free to pm me when you need help, this sounds like a neat project!
