I know InyokaMadoda but as you said the faces on the sword need to be picked out. And for that particular part of the model the faces, I think, need to be surfaced. And with the current paint, I can't think of a way to make them stand out with the color range I used on it.

How about doing the faces in an entirely different colour? Red through to pinks?

Either way, my vote is to keep the blues, but with a light blue rather than white final colour.

hmmm, yes this is a very tricky thing to paint at this high a level isnt it?

the colour is not so important but whatever colour you do paint the sword you will need o modify the clour of his face to suit as the sword and head are one the same eye line. For me the current stle hasnt worked, its very well painted but when i look at it i cant tell what effect your trying to show me. thats the only reason it doesnt work.
normally i would say keep the colour palate small (unless your painting some crazy chaos Tzentch/Salnesh thing) which would mean a green sword with the green robes, green eyes etc. but with a model this size you could paint it any colour and it will look fab.
good luck and i cant wait to see what you come up with

The last Abbadon that I painted I used metallics for the blade, while slowly working flesh into it then having pure flesh on the faces, as they are attempting to escape from it.

I agree with the color on the sword not working, sure it might just be highlights and details missing, but it doesn't look... swordy enough. Maybe try corpsesarefun's washes over chainmail technique? I think the 2 layer blue wash would look much better if you want to stick with the blue.

I've been thinking and I'm gonna try a different approach. I've been thinking of a way to make the sword look more alive. Like it's own character. Maybe using fleshy tones with green giving it an out world dark look and maybe light source coming from the eyes and mouths. A yellowish light maybe. Gonna mess with it in photoshop and show some ideas tonight and see what you guys think.

@ InquisitorFabius: I'm trying to stay away from using metallics on the model because I think it would clash with the semi NMM style of the armor. But I'm always willing to experiment.

This is fun.

By metallics I meant coloring. Mixing NMM and TM are a no-go. The flesh on the sword is prob the best way to embody the ideal of Drach'nyen.

Glad you like the idea. I was looking on CMON and I couldn't find a good sword painted. One of the guys on there I like was Arjay but it's like like he ditched the faces, flied them down, and GS'd the sword smooth. But that's unacceptable for me and my Abaddon

Got side tracked today. Had to clear some of my boxes of models so I sat in the garage assembling and cleaning. I got a box of 10 CSM's preped and primed though It's a small box so not much clearing there so tomorrow I'll probably do the same. I still have another land raider, predator, and 2 vindicators on my to do list for tomorrow. I'm basically getting as much as possible ready for the weekend so I can break out the airbrush on a good chunk of my army.

Still have 20 more CSM's to do, 10 terminators, 2 dreads, 2nd defiler bi pedal conversion, and 2 rhinos all sitting in boxes if I get the others done tomorrow.

Not yet Breaker lol. After converting the second I'll be sending them both to a friend to GS some nurgle goo. Or I might have my hand at it this weekend then I'll show some sneak peaks. I still don't have a head for the first and I'm wondering if they really need heads. I think is more mysterious with no head. But its still in the works.

PROGRESS! BUT YOU WILL SEE I SUCK AT SCULPTING LOL!

Ok I got all the vehicles done with the exception of the other defiler conversion and a land raider still in it's box. Still have the terminators to do but I'll start them when my MAS bases come in to match the troops on 25mm bases. I think I got the right terminator bases, 40mm correct? Anyways here's some WIP after air brushing dark angles green, and highlighting also with the airbrush with rotting flesh. It's awesome pre-shadowing and is my way to cheat and see where the best highlights will go.

THE DEFILER! He's not done although painted with the same colors as the rest. I just figured since I got the airbrush out might as well play with it. I'm thinking of filling the void where the cannon was, with a giant eyeball. I'm running out of ideas though so please, GIVE ME YOUR INPUT ON THE DEFILER. I don't want to put a head on him because with the fleshy pieces already in, I want to keep him 50/50 mechanical/mutation.

WHAT NOW? I will be going through each model and detailing, re highlighting, etc. -Sigh-

------PS--- Your eyes are not going bad. The white background has blue and red hues. I got new ottlite lamps and my overhead lamp is a different hue so it's messing with my camera's white balance. grrr.

wow coming on very nicely, and there is nothing wrong with your sculpting!!!! Geesh!

Anyway as for the defiler and his great 'eye'. It's a good idea but have you thought about maybe a cyborg (half mechanical half biological) head, or, (and this is my favourite idea) put a big T.V. screen where his head should be and paint on a face.....so its mechanical, but represnting the biological. (you could even have lines across the screen etc as picture interferance....kinda like that evil dude with the drugs in that robo cop film.....anyone?)
Anyway thats my input for what its worth.

keep up the FAB work sir

Looking good, as always! I not a fan of the big eye idea. I've never seen one done that looked anything but goofy and cartoonish. I can't think of a good idea, but something mechanical seems appropriate - how about a face made out of mechanical parts? Think of the floating head at the end of the third Matrix film, but with larger mechanical parts and not the face of a baby! I have no idea how it could be done, but there's my thoughts....

First off: Love the defiler. Keep his head off, it'll just make him look like a teensy titan knockoff.

Secondly: The giant eye where the cannon was just kinda says Tzencth to me. Maybe put a big mouth or something with all kinds of nurgle gribbleys on it.

Keep up the good work. Always a blast to see your stuff.

Ok I was messing with guys that had flesh exposed heads today and experimented with using higher contrast on certain characters that had been modeled better in their facial expressions to emphasize age, stress, and evil. In this case the Terminator lord that "use to have Glowie Claws and a mask" pictured in the middle of the group.

The other picture is me messing around with the scheme. You will notice the brightness of all the armor except the right shoulder pad where I did the paint like Lexicanum says "grey-green" and I cant help but to think that the original scheme bores me, much like the right shoulder pad is boring you right now. I was doing a bright gradient on the left shoulder but started to look too clean to be chaos. I actually have 5 layers of blending in that right shoulder and I'm not impressed by it's almost invisible transition. It's a little shiny in the pic but I can tell you with confidence "I painted it, and I hate it" lol.

You guys think I should stick with the original "the purge" scheme or get a little more creative? I want to keep the grey-green color but even in my highlight I mixed some white in and it's still not to my liking. HELP! It's hard because these guys scream SM's because all the trim on the armor is either black or green. with the exception of the chest which calls for black with gold trim, which I did not do.

I know it's been quiet in here for the past 3 days. I've been working on the Valkyrie commission for my FLGS. But I know some people like to see what I'm working on even if it's not my chaos.

I purchased an new airbrush this weekend also. The Iwata Eclipse. I love this thing. I got the Valk done and repainted all my tanks to grey/green instead of the dark angels green and rotting flesh shown before.

Anyway, here's what's done so far on the valk.

-----I just noticed I put the the outboard horizontal stabilizer's on backwards lol. Will break them off tomorrow. Gives me an excuse to break out my new toy again. -----

Very nice as always LBursley I am very impressed with your painting!

On the Purge now,I think you should go off the beaten track and not really paint them the same as GW's Eavy Metal team, maybe you could do a blochy kind of paint scheme sort of more along the lines the 'Lords of Decay'.Also maybe you could add some details related to Nurgle, maybe some of the stuff from here,I know you might have seen this already but maybe it can give you a bit of inspiration:

Today I fixed the outboard VERTICAL stabilizers ( I was wrong thinking they were horizontal "yaw control"), primed the booms half way back and attempted to blend the pattern back together and I must say I'm very happy with it I also air brushed some exhaust buildup since I had my toy out. Almost finished with this thing! Then I'll stop taking commissions till my army is finished.

I also got my MAS trash bases today for the 2 dreads and the 10 terminators YAY!
