Thanx! Yes they had an idea. It was in WD352 page 86, Catachan Valkyrie painted by Chris Peach. He got the idea for the scheme from looking at modern day helicopter pictures.
wow, still awesome work sir! thats the best Valkyrie I have seen.
As for the Purge, you should absolutely go your own way with them colour wise and there are endless reasons why they would have a slightly hanged colour scheme.

Yeah I got a lot of inspiration from lemmings blog. After seeing what was possible I decided to cut 1 of my defilers up.
------Just got an idea looking at the defiler again for the void in his chest. Gonna work on him tonight. It's gonna be gross. I was thinking of making 2 rollers with spikes inside basically to grind up bodies. There's 2 spots just below his arms I plan to put exit vents for the blood, flesh, bone. YES a way to make this guy gory!------

I painted them again but this time I wanted to stick with high contrast like I originally wanted when I started this blog. This is the easiest paint job ever and the results look blended. I also want to play with my army soon and it's not like they are entering golden demon.
Steps so far are as follows.
1. Base coated black 2. Air brushed White from directly above the models as only to highlight tops of all surfaces. This pre-shades the model and pretty mush does all the blended highlights for you. 3. Thrakka Green Wash on armor (spelling?) 4. Devlan mud wash on skulls... This step made the most realistic looking skulls I have ever done.
What now? 5 of 10 terminators- RFP (ready for primer) Havocs- RFP 2 Dreads- RFP Nurgle- RFP ( going to repaint him to match high contrast scheme) Started to assemble the 2nd Land Raider Started 2nd Defiler conversion as I wait for the Evergreen Plastic tubes to arrive for the rollers on the first defiler, as well as mold making and casting stuff to arrive)
I'll still be picking out certain details with a brush by hand but this is an 'easy mode' way to cut time out of blending the green areas. Now its only about touch ups.
Kinda what I did before but instead of using DarkAngels Green and rotting flesh, I saved money using a cheaper airbrush paint and only spending about $6 for both black and white. I'll only need 2 pots of the green wash for the whole army.

Since InquisitorFabius hurt my feelings lol, I started detailing on one of the term lords (because you all know those are my favorite ). I'm staying with the purge scheme as far as where the black areas are. I hate doing black because the only way people seem to do it is with the extreme edge lines (like a gloss paint would render), but I'm trying to stay away from that and try to have a bit of realistic light and texture and I don't think any chaos would be glossy or clean .
My BLACK was done with a Charcoal Grey by Foundry and washed with badab black. I'll do very diluted highlights with codex grey and black.
I did the lighting part as you have seen with the airbrush. As far as texture, I'll have gloss varnish on certain parts, as well as satin and matte. I tried it on a model for practice. Imagine yet another way to get depth, making people catch texture changes in a mini. I love the idea! (It's probably been done but I'm stoked I came up with it in my own thoughts!)
I know I'm usually good at taking pictures with detail for you guys too see what I'm doing, and that last set was garbage lol. I ask you to forgive me and I present true LBursley WIP goodness.
NOTE: I spent a lot of time working on his cloak,( painted using Foundry Charcoal Black Triad Paint System)
You can see the airbrush step made the surfaces a bit rough. I will remedy by using liberal coats of varnish Have not touched his face.. So I'd say he's about 40% done.
GUN was painted using NMM with metallic pigments. I don'y know why more people do it.. It's awesome. Check the comparison in the tutorial.
NMM VS METALLIC PIGMENTS (at the bottom of the page there's blue letters you click to see the same mini painted using regular paint's+ metallic )

I was trying to bring attention to the emblem by blending scorpion green toward the flies. Was playing with it, because I did just black flies and didn't like it :/ And the purge isn't a favorite chaos army so it's hard to find examples of what people come up with.
Was thinking of making the flies look like they were painted on with a stencil and have black paint dripping from them. I'll try it on another model when I finish this guy, and see what you guys think. Like always you guys have a part in this
1. The pic of the cloak before looks a lot like the light is making more of the blended effect so I have a comparison shot. Left is base coated, and right is the finished 3 color blend. Note how the airbrushed white is an easy way to find the brightest highlight. The final fur was painted scorched brown in the black areas and bestial brown on the white.
2. Term lords wip 3. Regular terminators wip. I chose to leave the trophy racks off.

G'day - love this Blog, great stuff. I suffered the problems with black painting, (which is tough when collecting black legion!), and so ive been repainting my models with boltgun metal, then 3+ layers of baddab black. its still definitely black, but I think it gets close to the textures and light reflection you mention.
Been busy all week and this weekend is busy: College Interview Baseball Game to go to Birthday I need to attend ETC.
Also got a commission for the new cadian command squad and I got the shipment yesterday so I have to get cracking on that.
Also going to try using air drying clay on the defiler to bulk out his armor. Been seeing a lot of pictures of custom titans and brass scorpions and I got inspired.
Also learned a good handfull of new techniques from buying the HOTLEAD dvd and it was worth it. 500 minutes (8 hours 20 mins) of color theory, 3 blending techniques (I found out I've been dry layer blending on my guys and want to try the other 2 badly), fixing mistakes. Great for a beginner and lots of techniques for advance users, oh yeah... he goes through NMM ALSO! Got mine from CMON.
So stay tuned! Cadian command squad should only take me a night or 2 to finish. And I'll be taking breaks to work up the defiler.

Ok had to take a break. Been working on the defiler most of the day and squeezed out all the base color for the command squad. The Air Drying clay is working like a champ and after its completely dry I'll tell you how it stands up to some drilling and sanding. Pictures of the defiler tomorrow, er today 12:29am here.

IG doing good. I love the new models. I'll be highlighting and a little blending tomorrow on them. I'll include pix of them with the defiler to show what I've been working on like always .
So I suck at using GS but not so bad with good old clay. I love the air dry clay! Cheap and easy to work with.
I find now with what I've added on I basically used the defiler as an armature lol and am covering up a lot of the machine with flesh. So what I'll do from this point is build the muscle and flesh masses and carve out certain areas for detail bitz as well as add more armor. I didn't show the front because my idea about the rollers didn't impress, so I'll be drawing up some designs and ripping up the torso area so I can have full freedom to sculpt.
Didn't work on the Cadians today being addicted to the defiler progress knowing I have another in box waiting to be built. But I think if you had to choose for me, you would have wanted me to work on the defiler anyway
