Not exactly in theme with the rotting big guy, but it looks like it could be obsidian, and that would be darker and contrast with the rest of the body/head. Either that or really old rusted/dirty bronze might be dark enough to contrast.

I know, no updates on my chaos because of commissions, but I figure I might as well show you what I'm working on

Commission for "Pair a Dice Games" Vista, California.

They have a Valkyrie I'll be painting After I finish the Stompa this weekend.

These pictures are just after I finished weathering. Now the detailing starts.

I concur, very nice. It's a heck of a big model that, bigger than I realised!

Looking forward to the finished article!

Really nice rusted metal you're doing there. I think that's a way better look than how GW did theirs.

Personally I'm not much of a fan of this model but you've really done it justice. I really like the muted red colourscheme, so much better than the bright, vivid red that you often see on ork models. It's nicely weathered too, not too OTT.

Keep up the good work.

Thanx for the comments everyone! Yeah, I wanted the scheme to reflect salvaged metal and battle. I didn't like the look of fresh salvaged stuff so I kept the overall look dark. The owner of the store wanted a little red in the scheme but no particular codex scheme or insignia.

I'll have pix up when the model is finished.

-chaos note- After Ahriman and noticing my skill had gained a level, I stripped the paint off of other special characters shown in the blog. Abaddon, Lucius, Huron, and the glowie Term Lord.

Shhh.. I'm working on Abaddon in the wee hours of the night.

I know I told you I was working on Abaddon late at night. So I figure I'd show you some proof and some WIP shots.

A good start. I liked it how you'd done it originally, so I can't wait to see what you do with it this time.

Have you ever thought about going in for Golden Demon?

No GD for me. The competition is crazy . I'm just a guy that likes to paint now and then

Fair enough. Just thought you might like to have a go. I'd say your painting skills are definitely up to it. No plans to simply enter something you're painting from this thread? Thus creating no additional work for you. Even if it doesn't place, getting through the first cut would feel pretty damn good I'm sure....

I might have a go at it now that I think of it. See how the judges like my stuff. I just wish I knew where to find a schedule. I can hit the Los Angeles GD if I knew when it was. Can't seem to find anything on the GW site Events calendar for GD.

Never mind. It was under Games Day. Seems they are only hitting the East Coast and Canada for 2009.

Little more work on Abaddon. Blended scorched brown into the darker parts of the armor, then a mix of scorched brown and chaos black for the darkest areas. Was messing with his skin tone and trying to keep it pale. Mixed dwarf flesh and fortress grey for the base. Added regal blue to the mix for shading under his brow, nose and lower lip as well as the pain of getting under his lower eye lids and the sag of skin below it. Then did a little highlighting with a mix of dwarf flesh and skull white. I like it so far but I'll probably mix some purple into the shading for more contrast. C&C encouraged!

Also the sword is just coated with a diluted Regal blue, but I'll be building it up using goblin green as a highlight and go white from there. Pretty much like I did Ahriman's staff.

Thanx Phill and Beef! It's compliments like that, that keep me painting and wanting to perfect my skills more. I only started painting last year after a long time away from Warhammer when I was 16. I was in the military for 8 years and never had the time really to paint but always knew I'd be back once my life permitted. So now at age 28 I read a lot and spend time looking at GD winner models and try to duplicate techniques by either google search or finding out on my own. I'm glad I could jump back into the hobby running and it's fun to share my work.

Thank you Everyone following along on my random paint crusade! Lol your visits are much appreciated

NEED YOUR HELP!

I've been messing with the sword all night. You wont believe me but there's 10 shades of blue in the sword. I originally wanted to use the same colors here but the style like the first Abaddon I did, fade from black to blue to white, hilt to tip. But as I was painting I wondered how it would look NMM sword style. I have mixed feelings about it. In the first picture (left abaddon) I think the sword throws off the model because the claw gradient is a single, one direction blend, while the NMM sword goes 2 ways. That's what bugs me. And if you need to imagine what the other way is, look at the bottom picture (left abaddon) and from this angle you only see left/rear of the sword. So imagine that on the whole thing.

But tell me the truth.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Go with the "single gradient" bottom to top black/blue/white?

Or leave "as is"?

I like it. I think it works just the way it is, although I'm wondering if you're going to pick out the warped faces on the sword? It seems like you have to somehow, but I can't spot a good way of doing that whilst still retaining the blended effect you've got. The only down side to the sword for me is that the contrast between the left and right sides at the top and bottom of the sword seem too stark. Maybe take the white down a bit to a light blue...? Also, by doing the rest of the sword handle, it will make the contrast seem less stark I guess.

The claw is made from different material and only has one surface in each direction whereas the sword has two surfaces on each side of the sword - does that make sense?

Incidentally, I know the character has hair, but to my mind, it looks better without....

Sadly, I don't think the sword works at all. The blade is just too difficult of a surface for it to properly interact with a light source.

That's what I was thinking InquisitorFabius. I think for this daemon sword a glowie effect works best. So now that I've thought of it I'll be doing it over tomorrow with one gradient.

Do you think blue works with the armor? I'm thinking I'll keep it generally dark so the armor stays as the focal point. Maybe only blend from regal blue to ultramarine blue.

Keep in mind I made his loin cloth green to somewhat tie him into my legion. And the skulls are being highlighted up with grey, so don't pay attention to the green hehe.

Thanx for the input guys. I like discussing it while I work on him so the outcome is optimal.
