Hey guys,

Mrs recently bought us a Assault on Black reach set, I havnt painted since the early 90s where my idea of painting as a kid was throwing 4 colours at the mini.

Anyway the point of this blog is for me to share what ive picked up along the way, and absorbed off the internet like Johnny 5 all in one place so I can try and help others... and motivation for me.

Anyway to start heres a pic of the first Ork I painted :

And here was the next 2 I did :

I have done another 2 which i'll upload pics of when ive got better light, I have started some more as I am not happy with the skin tone, while in pics I am quite happy with it, when its on a table it seems too dark.

Anyway a few other little bits ive done along the way (more tips)

Cheap as hell Wet pallet

Living in the sticks I dont have any craft stores around. So while in Morrisons (UK Supermarket) I picked up these stackable Pyrex tubs £1.50 each and a roll of parchment paper (90p or free if stolen from the kitchen) and for the foam, I used 2 layers of felt (stole from the mrs crafting supplies, but they are a pack of 10 sheets from poundland.

So for a couple of quid you have some dirt cheap stackable wet pallets.

And finally for now my little paint helper.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Thought I would mention what paints I used for the second lot of Orks skin.

As I know personally if I ever see any I like and the colours arnt listed it a pain!

So I primed them black.
Base coated in 1:1 Catachan Green and Scorched Brown
First highlight of 1:1 Catachan Green and goblin green
second 1:1 Catachan Green and Camo Green
Then highlighted with Camo Green.

They look good, especially since you wet blended instead of dry brushing the skin. Dry brushing skin tones always looks wrong to me.

Nice work for the first five figures and definitely above tabletop standard for rank and file troops.

Also love the duckling! Hope it prospers and good luck to you with your new army.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

The Orks are looking really nicely painted, welcome back into the world of painting.

Love the duck as well, I used to have pet ducks they are so full of character.

The orks are looking good. Maybe this will motivate me to paint some of the ones I have lying around.

The duck reminds me of when I was a kid. Our fair had a booth where you threw nickles onto glass plates. If it stayed you won a baby duck. I came home one year with about 16 of them. My parents freaked since we lived in town! They had a good life out at grandpa's farm though.

Keep painting, looking forward to seeing more.

Yea I'm also not a fan of the dry brushed skin style so I will only wet blend them.

I thought the winning a goldfish was bad, dunno how they got a supply of ducks to give away Nice to hear they went to a good home.

We live out in the sticks so we have chickens etc. That duck is imprinted on the mrs so it thinks its a human and ignores other ducks. Also means it will only follow humans around.

Anyway back to some Orky stuffs, heres the last 2 I did, next ones are going to be a big brighter/cartoony compared to the muted colours. Also the highlights dont seem to have come out in the photo much.

Mrs keeps buying bits so got plenty to come, rest of a AOBR set, some Gretchins, a Trukk, and she also wants to play original Warhammer, so shes been buying up Orcs and Goblins off Ebay, just waiting for them to come.

Nicely done i love the 'Mushy peas' ork skin looks very cool. Cant fault your painting accept the metallics, they dont quite look as good as the rest.

Yea I agree, especially in the pics.

Didnt see the skin as mushy peas but yea it defiantly is looks much better from a distance than the darker previous ones imo.

Any recommendation for metallics?

atm I am using

1:1 Chaos Black & Gunmetal
Drybrush gunmetal
Badab black
wash of Bestial brown for rust

then finally a mithril silver highlight.
