I am interested in the thoughts around the very sound of a battlefield in the universe of warhammer 40,0000.
As hobbyists we are engaged on a physical level with the inclusion of miniatures that represent the various races and characters of the 41st millennium.
Artwork and illustrations provide a visual key for our imaginations to engage in also as well as descriptive text.
But what about sound?
For example I was wondering what the sound of a passing jet bike would be like, or the spit of a boltgun.
I am aware that various audio novels have been composed and produced, but has anyone else given thought as to what things (when compared to real world sounds) would be like to listen to?
Nah, those are Shootas. I've read about the sound of boltguns, but that was just about a paragraph about boltguns barking with the righteous fury of the emperor's finest or something like that. I guess the games should be a somewhat acurate source. DoW and Space Marine.
Really? A The almighty Bolter gets compared to an M60? I'd always envisioned a Bolter having more of throaty roar. Such as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj4zhfNd7Ks. Skip ahead to 1:05.
As for a land speeder. I think they would sound like a TIE fighter. But maybe that would be more appropriate for an eldar vehicle.
I'm not going to go and find you the sound bites but I hear bolters like a repeating grenade launcher like the mk19. If for no other reason the sheer size of the rounds.

I think that the SAG has a sound not unlike that of the stargate when activating.
"Friglatt Tinks e's da 'unce and futor git, but i knows better. i put dat part in when i fixed im up after dat first scrap wid does scrawn pointy ears and does pinkies." Dok chopanblok to Big Mek Dattrukk.

I would think that there is a perpetual dull echo of fantastic movie and videogames scores vibrating through the ears off all people in 40k... or is that just me remembering all my games? No, this is real.
I think Gauss weapons are described as a harsh buzz.
SAGs go 'whyyy meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! *dopplering away*
Splinter weapons are likely pretty much soundless.
I always envision KMB as going 'Zooorb! '

So it sounds like the dull thumps of chevrons locking, a klaxxon blaring and then a kind of gloopy sound?? Hmm that could actually be rather appropriate for a SAG.

Bolters are descriped as having a roar when fired. I would imagine its something like "Cra-ROOOM", like a very large animal coughing(but louder)
Lasguns are said to produce a sharp cracking sound. like a whip.
Shurican weapons will have a whining sound, although that could be the Eldar firing it.
Basilisks will sound like any other artillery. LRBTs much the same.
Jet Bikes will probably sound alot like the bikes in Star Wars. Land Speeders will just have the sound of their turbine engines as their Anti-grav relys on Magnitisim.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

im2randomghgh wrote:Well I don't know how good the SF were for SM. The Orks...didn't sound even slightly orky. The Orks from The WHFB strategy games were much better.
Also, bolter sound like SMG's in it, and they forgot that BOLTS AREN'T BULLET, THEY ESPLODE!
They do ESPLODE, if you see the slo mo on the main menu you see the bolt entering the ork, then ESPLODING inside them.
