I just headed down to my local GW and noticed that they had lowered, yes, lowered the prices on some of their goods. The things I noticed was the Realm of battle set and the figure case decreasing prices.

What is this madness? Have GW finally decided to actually run a good marketing strategy?

It's the same thing that they do with gasoline. Raise the prices to ridiculous amounts then lower them a little and people think they are getting a good deal.

Ah of course. Thank god I've stopped buying GW stuff, or I'd be addicted to that stuff..

Hmm methinks those are less popular items and they're trying to get rid of stock? One of my lgs was selling the rob board for $75 off since no one bought it

Well that's weird.. Maybe they didn't update the site yet? Just an idea..

I do hope they're decreasing the overall miniature prices though.

If they wanted to get the playerbase to like them again, rather than ripping them a virtual new one they'd drop their prices by a third, but it will never happen (even though this would still leave the prices far higher than they were when i started this hobby).

I'm guessing it's just your store since nobody else has heard of a price decrease, welcome as it would be.

No decrease in my local GW store. Would like to see something concrete (visual posting of something to show the differences) before commenting further.

The thing about GW decreasing prices is that for every 1% price decrease they give us, they suffer a 2 or 3% decrease in profit. And how much do you think it would take for us players to care? 5%? 10%? On the grand scheme of things that is costing GW 10 or 20% of their profit. What would you do as CFO if one of your people suggested cutting your profits by 20%?

Given that they are beginning to lose players (and likely have been for years) at an ever increasing rate they might consider it worth the loss to maintain the customer base.

Probably not though..

At some point the prices will go down once we get out of the recession. (At least in the US.)

Not bloody likely. If that happens, I'll eat my hat. I don't have a hat, but I'll buy one, and then eat it.

and Ph34r, the idea is that lower prices would be offset by increased sales. I currently spend $0 a year on Games Workshop stuff. If they'd lower prices and therefore provide more value for the money, that number would skyrocket. Well, skyrocketing from $0 is a relative term, but I'd probably buy two or three armies, which would, even with decreased prices, cost substantially more than one army.... but again, value for money.

I'm curious to see what their next IR report is going to look like, but assuming it's like the last few, it'll look largely the same; more-or-less decreased sales volume, more-or-less static profits. At some point, they're going to reach a threshold where they just can't raise prices any more. The question is, when will that be? Who's going to pay $75 for a box of 10 Orcs?

If their profit margins really are so razor-thin, perhaps they should be seeking other ways to increase profits than just "lol heer we go, nuther price jump!" Because other than the switch to finecast (Which, by the way, I would note did not involve the company passing any of the savings on to its customers), the only cost cutting measure GW seems to take is closing official stores in the US (a good idea, IMO)... but then they go ahead an open new US stores so.... what?

Haha good quote

I too think it's unlikely. The only occasion I can think of is if a store has mis-priced something or their has been an admin error.

That's the thing, would it skyrocket? Would decreasing GW's prices by 10% across the board increase the number of players/amount of money spent by 25%? I would think no.

I don't know, but their sales are obviously decreasing, so they obviously need to do something to make buying their products more enticing. At some point, raising prices is probably not the best way to offset loss of profit stemming from loss of sales, and that point has to be rapidly approaching.

All I can say is a 10 to 15% reduction in prices would have me reconsidering my position on not buying GW products, and I can't be the only one. And it wouldn't increase my spending by a mere 25%. I'd be going from $0 to... well, let's see. I wanted to expand my Skaven and Space Marines, and start an Ork army and another WHFB army (I hadn't decided which one by the time I stopped playing), so, taking into account a 10 to 15% price drop, I'd be spending $1275 to $1350, which is quite a bit more than $0.

To be honest, I don't know what the best solution is from a business standpoint; what I do know is that the current plan isn't sustainable, long term. All I can say is what it'd take for me, personally, to reconsider my position. Hell, a price decrease wouldn't even be necessary, IMO, if they'd rescind some of their more bizarre policies where they seem to treat their customers as obstacles to overcome (IE, rumor blackouts, lack of communication, and attitude toward the rest of the industry ("The Games Workshop Hobby, we have no competition!")).

Just recently, Nintendo knocked roughly £50 off the price of the new 3DS (from ~£200 to £149) in order to boost sales. I don't think anyone is expecting them to make less profit as a result - in fact, the whole point is to increase profit.

Well, that's because Nintendo realized that they had overestimated how much they could charge for their product and still move enough units to make a profit. The thing is, the people at Nintendo actually attempts to understand its target market, and when they mess up, they take real steps to fix it.

Sales numbers weren't where they wanted them to be, they realized that it's because their product was too expensive, so they fixed it.

I imagine if it was GW they just would've gone "Hrmm... clearly it needs to be more expensive, that's how we'll make up the difference between projected sales and actual sales! Brilliant!"
