What advantages doe this sort of MDF have? Not as prone to warpage?

Mostly, on my phone.

Because laminate flooring is made from lots of layers, it's very stable, very strong and - as you say - doesn't warp. The mighty Cam made me a set of 1x1 board tiles from this, and they live in my garage (because space) which is not the most... clement of atmospheres and they're still rock solid and dead level.

Ah, that makes sense then. Thank you kindly sir.

In your garage? You no have basement? I keep everything in mine, and run a dehumidifier 24-7 during the summer. We're something like 20"+ over our normal rainfall total for the year... and this is without any hurricanes/tropical storms etc. So... much, much humidity.

I'll keep an eye out for the stuff.

Not where I should be

Thanks folks.

@ Red, Main advantage is exactly as Graven said,(thanks bud) stability, it is very dense. It is relatively inflexible, and solid. Has a coating on either side which is slightly water resistant, and can be cut with simple tools. Glues take well to the surface, and the finished surfaces take paint well without the age old problem of the paint soaking in. Though the edges and any areas you clean the surface coating off will still suffer this. I can work this stuff with a box cutter and pliers, and side cutters. The box I bought is enough to cover a 1.2m (4ft) square, and cost £1 as it was the end of a line in the DIY store. I don't care what the finish was on top, but I guess you could get the one with a granite or slate finish to make life easier. I did have the advantage of a circular saw to chop it all up in about 1/2 hour, but you could do that with a hand saw, the dust I collected has made me a bunch of flock too. (HAZARD WARNING!!! MDF dust is said to be carcinogenic and not very good for you, only work in a well ventilated area and possibly wear a mask.) Personally don't really plan on living long enough to worry about that kinda gak, and have been cutting up stuff and spraying stuff for far too long to worry about it now, but even so I do not just cut this stuff up, I do it outside, with a dust extractor on the tooling.

Next up a little side project again...

Thank you for looking, all questions and C&C welcome.

Thanks guys, very much appreciated. Please don't say that Vik, want you to smile when you visit not grimace.

Yes it is the wee small hours, and yes I can't sleep so a bit of paint and a couple more details added.....

And some "anti-grav" pads....

Thinking that the "ship" would have pads similar to the anti grav systems used on landspeeders, kinda like the ones used in the Matrix on the "ships", along with thrusters, would enable something like this to float low to the ground.

From here i will be adding a "shanty" homestead that will give a frame for miniatures to climb over and add a bit more story to it, will be adding a few more "sweety" details too, because I think I have buried the Smarties tube a bit too far.

Thoughts are welcome, please feel free to comment. Thanks for looking....

Looks stunning as a build. I'm slightly unsure of the pads' colour scheme: whilst your verdigris is excellent, I'm not sure it fits. I know you're looking to contrast with the rest of the ship but I'm not sold on it.

As I’ve told Dr. H, go yellow safety yellow like watch out for the bumpers or the antigravity plates will flatten you sort of yellow. Of course the writing should be super small so you have to get close to read it .

Ship is looking great. Will you make the other half later as a separate piece or just leave it to us to imagine it buried in the ground.

i think with the current build it reminds me strongly of the Star Wars aesthetics...which is a good thing...

tho...one thing...the pads...they kill for me some aspect of the look...the silhouette gets blown up too much...i see/ understand your vision...but...hmmm....of course just my 2c here...

also...grimacing...well...your work is sometimes as effective as strong coffee....a true eye-opener but nevertheless to fully work still bitter on the tongue of the mediocre

Thanks folks much appreciated.

OOOOps!

Bit of a funny day, bought that and also nipped by the local Nickle and Dime store, did a bit on tooling today...

£1 for 3 nail brushes, take a pair of pliers to the bristles. bit of glue and some sandpaper.

Great for straight edge sanding.

And never had a static grass applicator so looked it up and £7 worth of bits later...

And it actually works....

As i say bit of a funny day, not that it matters much to me these days, but couple of my projects finally got enough votes to get a score and apparently I am pretty gak. Don't really care. Not sure how to feel really. Honestly it is not that important. I keep saying and do believe that I am not a painter, I do enough that I am happy and I enjoy trying to paint. All I ever want to do is inspire folk, never going to be the best, but if some people try as well and usually end up way better than me that's cool in my book.
Tomorrow think I will get my trusty 3" brush out and paint some marines.

Anyways thanks for looking folks. you guys are amazing, thank you for keeping me going.

I would recommend a #3 brush instead of a 3" brush.

Building is what you enjoy doing anyway, so disable the voting for paint scores and be done with it.

Save the bristles from those brushes. They make excellent tufts of grass.

Camkierhi wrote:... but couple of my projects finally got enough votes to get a score and apparently I am pretty gak. ...
That all depends on which pictures you look at, you have some 9+'s in there too.

Until you get into double-digit votes for a picture you can't trust the result. There's too many "guests" out there that give 0's just to troll,
And even where people are voting intentionally, everyone has a different range in which they "will" vote: If it would be less than a 4 then why bother, equally, if it's clearly a 10 then the artist already knows it's good so why bother...
And what they consider to be worth a certain value. There's no guidelines on what is worth a 10 and how that compares to a 5, or a 3...

The biggest influence I've seen on what gets good scores is how "cool" the model is:
A basic SM tactical squad, even painted beautifully, is a bit "boring" and so gets few votes.
Crazy patterns, wild conversions, amusing posing, gets lots of high score votes... for both coolness and painting...

One of my "best" painted models, if you consider the voting, is my "Rippers playing 40K" piece.

That picture has an average painting score of 7.78... (and I know some people gave it a 10, see the comments)
I would give that picture a 3 for painting. Just being kind.

That's a better score (and therefore "better painted") than my Scythe figures I did recently:
Spoiler:

Anna and Wojtek has a painting score of 7.75...
I would give this one an 8 for painting (pretty much as high as I'd give any of my work).

I put no effort into the painting of the rippers, and hours of work into the Scythe figures.
Do you really believe that the rippers are better painted than Anna?!
I don't. I know that those Scythe figures are some of my best work, but they're very subtle and not very exciting.
The rippers are just funny.

It seems that if you make them laugh, it short-wires people's brain and they don't critique the painting.
So a fun project can end up with a high score for an average "get it done" paint-job, then when you finally finish a more serious model and you're really proud of the effort you put in to the painting and consider it your best painted model to date... it scores lower than the earlier project and you're left wondering where you've gone wrong.

There's nothing wrong with what you are doing.
The voting doesn't work as a measure of how well you are doing.

Judge your work for yourself, look back over your own work and compare it to now, if you can see the improvement (objectively, critically, as if you were judging) that improvement is real.
Also, listen to the people you trust (not the faceless voters), the comments are infinitely more useful in seeing how you are doing. Every "great" "good job" and proves that someone has been moved by your work enough to put the effort in to write a comment (no matter how short), that is worth far more than someone clicking on a number, as flash judgement, just to see the next picture.

It's been a long time since I've had the time to go on a voting binge... speaking of...
Theophony wrote:I’ve never paid attention to the voting. And I only vote when someone asks me to...
Well, if you've got time to kill, Theo', feel free to vote on all my photos. I've got so many on 4 votes, never mind those without a single vote...

You are doing great work, Cam', and you have improved massively since first appearing here on DDakka.

Thank you guys, really appreciate you taking the time out. Honestly do not worry at it though, you guys taught me long ago it's what happens here that matters more than the silly gallery. Just kinda wish the gallery was a better tool. instead of full of tools. Half the time I just forget to disable voting and that's the only reason I get any votes, don't really care, was just kinda venting.

And just saying you have no idea how cool and happy this makes me guys, that you take the time to make a video for it is humbling and I feel honoured.

That's alright, gave me an excuse to vent also... and to encourage Theo' to vote on all my things.

I'm too busy (and really running out of space) trying to sell my own things to be buying more things, but I will say good luck.

You don't know if you don't try, put things out there and someone, somewhere, will buy it, eventually, if the price is right.
But don't sell yourself short
Look at what it has cost you to make in time and materials, and then add profit on top of that (+50-100%, this is the price of your experience that they are paying for), and don't forget postage; make 'em pay as it will eat your profits to nothing (if you want to offer free postage, add the maximum postage cost to the price).

Give good, clear, exciting descriptions. Avoid self-depreciation. Marketing is all about telling the customer how great your product is.

And good photos.
