I think I came up with this idea because of watching a history program about world war one with loads of grim rotting corpses lying about. It's an important visual theme of warfare the old rotting corpse. Man made into meat. It's the underlying reality of war.

Knarled trees and roots can be had by wrapping any kind of wire into an armature, then coat it all with Liquid Green Stuff or some sort of modeling goop, the more lumps, the better, just don't worry about being neat and tidy with it.

it's ankles are part of the model, its the feet that aren't, but a small amount of GS makes everything perfect.

It depends on how you think really. For me its a Vulture, but for others they'd think Raven. It's down to the individual in each case really.

plus I've yet to see a decent cast of a Raven other than the Mordheim signpost one.

got some about somewhere, they are massive compared to a guardsman unfortunately.. plus would take a lot of repositioning.

Well thanks guys I thing that last one would be great - and then of course I could make a graveyard as my next diorama! Instant diorama pretty much, I would just need a few plastic skeletons and a wizard. But I first will have a go at GSing a raven. Just to see if its possible and because funds are low. I like to live life outside of my overdraft facility and I'm currently throwing money at a genestealer magus model.

A vulture (or several)would really be hilarious, but its drifting away from my original idea - and I would need to cut larger holes in the guardsmen. I can't really imagine a vulture being delicate enough to peck out an eye. Vultures are more gothic.

Vultures stab at the dead with their beaks, when you watch wildlife programs they take a little meat at a time, so an eyeball would be an appropriate sized morsel for it imo.

But I would like to see a scratch sculpt of a raven too

Its quite a scary prospect sculpting a raven but I will have a go later and see what happens. I can do miniature skulls so maybe I can do ravens.

I got some great metal decking bases from Dark Art miniatures and I'm putting a lot of the necomunda minis on them (not the orlocks they will have to have something special.)

Photo round-up of things getting prepared for paint.
