Howdy,

I'm not fond of the current Necron scarab models and am looking for a suitable alternative or 'counts as'. I understand the history behind scarabs, and insect swarms in relation to what is now the Necron fluff, and while it is neat to imagine mini cyborg piranhas buzz sawing their way through stuff, they just dont look like much on the tabletop.

The first idea to spring to mind was to copy Mechanicum Jon's Dark Eldar beasts conversions, shown here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery-viewimage.jsp?i=279749&m=2&w=800

I would have to trim the ragged skin to look more like shaped armor, and possible add some armored plates/wiring, as well as paint the open muscle as wiring. The open bones would likely be silver, ala the Terminator, or http://www.beaudaniels-illustration.com/technical-drawing-site-2/img/Sci-fi/robo-dog.jpg . I would also look at shaving off most of the mane and replacing it with an existing necron spine as well as replacing the mane hair with bundled wiring, which would result in Predator-esque braids.

Fluff would be something along the lines of the 'too far gone' necron AIs being transferred out of a normal necron form and into this, more feral and crude design, and kept 'at low power' or some such until the need arises to unleash them upon some enemy.

My concern is keeping it somewhat in line with the aesthetics of the rest of the army.

thoughts or suggestions?

If you can pull it off to create the robotic dog look I'm all in for this idea.

One single dog is not much of a swarm.

Here some ideas close to the original design:

Every spider/scarab swarm might fit, e.g. Tomb Kings or D&D spider/scarab swarms.

Zealot miniatures has some small "scarabs" http://www.zealotminiatures.co.uk/zealot-store

Wyrd has some arachnids: http://www.shop.battlefield-berlin.de/index.php/katalog/artikelinfo/19416-1-show-steampunk_arachnid_swarm_3.html

the zealot worker drones are nice.

It's actually K-9 from Dr Who, without a head.

The mouse droid from Star Wars is smaller and boxier, and has visible wheels

Hence the 'counts as'. Really just concerned with looks and figured the extra blades/teeth/claws would account for swarm-like attacks.

I do like those wyrd minis though and will give them a look.

Ooh, I like that AT-43 model. something like that - a small choppy flying robot - would seem the most necronish solution.

The cyber-animals are cute, but don't seem very fluffy - I _can_ see Necrons hypothetically enslaving animals with cyber-controller thingies. But such slave animals wouldn't seem likely to fight in a Scarab-like fashion.

Same problem: One beast on a 25mm base is as much a swarm as a SM captain with multiple attacks.
BTW I use these as my mechanical themed wracks

How big an issue is that? I havent played warhammer in 6 years.

I read something about scarabs 'going to ground' which i assume is some sort of cover option; would the larger dogs not be able to do that?

And i loved AT43 and played Therians. I could prolly create a whole necron army with the Therian stuff i have lol. Had considered using the Therian paint scheme on Necron models

I think the cyber-dogs would look rather badass, but I don't think they'd really fit the Necron feel. I would totally allow them in a game, but I think one of the more swarm-like options presented would be a better fit. The Wyrd arachnids and AT-43 Therian drones are my personal favorites.

Also, thanks for confirming my suspicions, insaniak. The shape immediately looked familiar, but the lack of head made me second guess myself.
