So, I'm just about to sit down and write the story of my Necron dynasty (due to the new codex), and started to wonder how many actually does this?
Do you write down your army fluff in some word file or so? If yes, then please post it here!
And even you just keep your army fluff in your head, I'd be happy to read about it! Could be fun to see the diversity of everyone's army backround. Especially as inspiration for now when I'm working on my own
I'll post mine too when I'm done!

I don't game a lot, the fluff and collecting are what keep me spending money. My main army is Word Bearers, I have fluff behind literally everything in the army now. I've working on them for the last three years IIRC. Like the OP, I've started working out the basics of a new Necron Army.

I bought one of those paperblanks books with an old looking cover to write down all my army fluff and battle reports in. A fortnight ago i bought a quill pen too! Only problem is I keep changing my mind/ am afraid of making a mistake, so I haven't started yet. I guess I should put it on computer first.

Fancy!
This got me thinking that I should come up with fluff for my Biel-Tan war host. Thoughts?

Mr Nobody: Wow, that's some good stuff! I like the feel of the chapter. Very cool, yet not OTT.
Ipro: I know what you mean To me, fluff is the major part of the game.
Montag: Wow, that sounds cool with the book and quillpen. It will look awesome once you've filled out portion of the book surely!
But I know what you mean too. So I second the idea of putting it on computer, that way you'll be able to think things through before you set them in ink. Oh, and you can easily post it on forums too for feedback

My fluff has been uber-lame over the years, so I've scaled it back a bit. They used to be a ridiculous rogue Space Wolf company that lived on a moon orbiting Fenris and fought a war on Terra ( LOL). Predictably, I've grown up (somewhat) since then, and have trashed the whole thing. Currently it just encompasses my Wolf Lord and a few of the HQs in my Great Company, but you can read what I've got here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Andilus_Greatsword%27s_Great_Company

The history of the Necrontyr is one steeped in deception and betrayal, but moreso even the Vitharr dynasty.
The Vitharr dynasty was a smaller dynasty that developed [INSERT GALAXY LOCATION]. Though small in terms of military power and generally unheard of by the large of the Necrontyrian empire, those that had heard of the Vitharr dynasty heard of their valour in battle.
Individual combat prowess were amongst the most aftersought virtues for a Vitharrian warrior, as well as Vitharr's enemies. Indeed, never in the history of Vitharr did the Phaeron order the attack upon civilians or innocents - these did not even deserve fighting Vitharr's warriors (however, if any civilian should use a weapon against a Vitharrian Necrontyr, they sealed their doom).
And when a Vitharrian warrior found a worthy opponent, he would go any lengths to defeat him. If any foe accidentally left a Vitharrian, that they had defeatet, alive on the battlefield, that one foe could be sure that the Vitharrian would return after rigorous practice and training to be able to defeat this worthy opponent. They would even make use of dirty tricks (within their combat expertise) to end the life of their chosen opponent, as long as they were sure their foe could see the Vitharrian's face whilst dying, that face smiling proudly, knowing them to be supreme warriors.
And so, the Vitharrian did not care much for gaining territory or resources. This Such was the life of the small dynasty Vitharr. Every warrior, be it of assault units, ranged units or even battlefield commanders held this honour close to their hearts. Indeed, every child, no matter if they were going to grow up as warriors or civilians, had this doctrine taught from early life, and so came to define their culture.
Anything that strikes out to you as ridiculous / OTT? Or unbelieveable? Or, at worst, did I misspell anything?

Stories and campaigns are what I love in 40k. Actually, I am working on my DKoK army, painting them (I am not a very good painter) and writing fluff (in french) about them and the campaign we play with my friends. Here is a small extract : Division Brandenburg is a prestigious siege army of the Death Korps of Krieg. It is well known for its ability to effectively carry out the assault on strongholds or difficult shock points, playing a pivotal role for other IG armies. It's been three campaigns that it kept the same main structure, composed of 11 regiments. Since its formation, the Brandenburg Division is under the responsibility of Generalleutnant Siegfried von Köln. After 499.990M41, Division Brandeburg was sent in Cygnus System, sub-sector Amarillo - Segmentum Pacificus, to help Saumurians IG regiments against the rebellion of Ecclesiarch Di Secrudo on the heavy fortified Hive World of Cygnus Prime. Unfortunately, war began to spread through the entire system quickly, and IG armies are now stuck in a much larger conflict, involving Chaos Space Marines from Pilgrims of Woe and Disown Sons ; and...Tyranids. Space Marines reinforcements from three chapters are also on the edge to join the ever-extending bloodbath. Division Brandeburg organization : 91st, 151st and 102nd Infantry Regiments of the Death Korps of Krieg 121st and 201st Siege Regiments of the Death Korps of Krieg 21st, 29th and 444th Artillery Regiments of Death Korps of Krieg 9th and 41st Armored Regiments of Death Korps of Krieg 4th Battle Tank Regiment of the Death Korps of Krieg (Following the flowchart of the army headquarters and main regimental organizations... and so on, and so forth...) The last campaign games were mainly between Tyranids and Saumurians IG, with Chaos playing troublemakers.... So I hope men of Division Brandeburg will soon distinguish themselves !

It's a decent start, although to be honest it could do with a bit more differentiating - the Sautehk Dynasty has a similar sort of honour-bound tradition. Aside from that though, it's completely fine, you just need to clean up grammar in a few places (some parts are redundant, like "those that had heard of the Vitharr dynasty heard of their valour in battle").

I like it, you spelled defeated "defeatet" but it's good otherwise. My DE are based off of a couple named Serdala and Victoria who were both abbandoned by their respective parents. Serdala's being Lilith and Sliscus, Victoria's being Vect and Malys, but neither of them know it. They grew up in the slums and were made sick by the filth that surrounded them, so they started a Kabal/Wych Cult of perfectionists and they have risen to become a small, but highly elite force.

Since you're asking , here's a chapter I've been sitting on for a while, but I'm really struggling to find a name for, and it's strictly a WIP, and help would be appreciated!
They're a breakaway of a psyker heavy chapter (probably going to use 1k Sons), who were stationed with the Council of High Lords of Terra while under investigation to ensure that they were no longer using "sorcery", after the Council decided to ban psychic activity before the Horus Heresy. Since these ~100 Astartes were totally isolated from the Heresy throughout, they are devoid of guilt, as during their solitude, their psychic powers grew faint, as they drew their magic from Magnus himself, and having been pardoned by the Emperor, entered his service directly.
Over time, their perception of the galaxy has changed, and like their Primarch's original chapter, they have begun to question the Emperor's role as one true god in the galaxy. Instead they respect all 5 (not including Malal or Xeno) gods in the galaxy, and that only with balance between them can the galaxy continue to exist.
To them, the Emperor represents order and justice, but also the suffering and death caused by maintaining such conditions. For example, the chapter spent many years in defence of a hive world, and saw that in this society, the poor remained poor, and died early after a pitiful existance, and any efforts to improve their quality of life was snuffed out by Imperial decree.
Tzeentch, "the Lord of Change" - to a "devout" Astartes, he represents trickery, lies, and deceit. On the other hand, Tzeentch represents evolution, and change (for better and for worse).
Nurgle is the facet of decay, but without disease and death, all would survive. Instead, only the strong survive, else the Galaxy would become overpopulated, and war would flourish.
Lust, pride and self-indulgence are the hallmarks of all who follow Slaanesh, but without him there would be no pleasure, no love, no friendship.
Khorne, the Blood God, Lord of Slaughter, revels in the blood shed throughout the galaxy, but does he not also represent strength in arms, chivalry and honour? None can deny that the Astartes do not fight incessantly, and take pride in their martial prowess, and show honour towards their opponents.
Their mantra with regards to the Ruinous Powers is not that they should be combated at every opportunity, as to do so would shift the balance, and serve to honour Khorne. Their duty is to mankind, to serve and protect even the lowliest of citizens, and they will only enter combat with the forces of Chaos if they represent a threat to the people of the Imperium.
Founding Chapter- Thousand Sons (sort of)
Battlecry- "The Balance must be maintained!" "Balance in all things!" "For Mankind! For Terra!"
Appearance- As in image below. When not wearing a helmet, all members of this chapter have their eyes covered with a blindfold, to prevent them from ever falling to temptation from seeing the mutations of chaos, and they perceive their environment through a combination of a unique extrasensory implant, and their ever fading psychic powers.
Battleforce- Due to the nature of the forming of this chapter, they have no vehicles other than what they brought with them to the Council of High Lords, and as such field very few, if any, vehicles.

My fluff is loose at best.
IG - Troops under the command of Colonel Midas. Stationed on a prison planet. Renown for the use of the double chainsword, a weapon that's incredibly deadly to both it's victim and it's wielder if not handled with extreme care (counts as power weapon).
Eldar - The only survivors of the craftworld mentioned in DoW 2. Rescued by a troop of harlequins before the fall, travel with said harlequins as they have no home to go to. Use a black and white scheme.

Ghost of Greed and Contempt
|
Sorry for the wall of text, but here it is:
Maulers Chapter Background
Founded: 635 M41.
Founding Chapter: Imperial fists/Blood angels
Chapter Master: Ammik Ranlon (acting )
Home World: Ulysses IX
Fortress Monastery: “The Mauling claw” (Star fort)
Colours: Black armour with red shoulder trim, No gold ornamentation.
Heraldry: Skeletal hand with red claws dripping with blood.
Battle Cry: “Maul!” “For vengeance, the first, and the lost!”
Size: (Approximately) 700 Battle Brothers.
Combat Doctrine: Stoic defence coupled with vicious counter-attacks. Expert Tyranid fighters.
Organisation: 5 “codex” organised companies, and a space- borne “crusading company”.
Formed In the 21st or “cursed” founding, a mixture of the gene-seed of the Imperial fists and the Blood Angels, the Maulers chapter are characterised by their stubborn natures, their penchant for close-quarters fighting, and their malfunctioning Catalepsean node, which is rumoured to mean the Maulers can fight for days without sleep.
Late in 801 M41, the Maulers First, Fifth and eighth companies were caught in a catastrophic warp storm. The Fifth and Eighth were confirmed as destroyed, by the death-scream of the navigators on the lost ships, but the Golden-armoured first company, aboard the strike cruiser “Render of lies”, was never definitively proved to have been destroyed. Such a blow would have crippled a lesser chapter, but as befitted a chapter of such illustrious gene-ancestry, the Maulers stood firm, their kinship with the stoic Imperial Fists and the proud Blood Angels became glaringly obvious.
Since this disaster, Ranlon, the Captain of the second, was elected as Chapter master, and immediately tasked Sergeant Arquellon, hero of the chapter, on secondment to the Dust Devils chapter, and one of only 12 survivors from the first company, to create a force to search out the fate of the first company.
Arquellon formed a veteran squad , named after himself, from which the commendable Captain Arctura was promoted to command of the 2nd, the first company being left absent from the rebuilding of the chapter, out of refusal to admit the loss of their best and brightest.
The second company then launched “The Red Crusade”, ostensibly to hunt down the regrouping Tyranid splinter fleets Ouroubos and Coatylus, but in truth to search the unmapped regions of space where the Librarians visions had seen “A hundred shining golden warriors embroiled in the clutches of a shadowy foe”. This great quest has driven the crusader company across the most dangerous sectors of the Imperium and veteran squad Arquellon has been at the forefront, in countless hopeless battles.
The other companies of the Maulers were not idle, the fourth notably serving in the Balur crusade during 944 M41, though they are outvoted as Chapter Master Calgar of the Ultramarines is elected leader of the crusade, and fully half of the chapter was involved in the Zeist campaign, again with an Ultramarine in overall command, though as a whole, the Maulers ignored Captain Sicarius’s commands in favour of their own commanders’ judgement. Relations with the Ultramarines are still strained.
The Maulers have sent a great many battle brothers to serve with the Deathwatch, where their Tyranid fighting expertise has been proven to be second only to the protégés of chaplain Cassius of the Ultramarines, who now grudgingly respect the skills of the Maulers veterans.
Great interest was given to the disappearance of the entire Fire Hawks chapter in 963 M41 by the Maulers, who watched with horror as the rest of the Imperium declared the Fire hawks lost in 983 M41.Refusing to admit that their brothers are likewise lost, the Maulers have vowed that they would not permit the Imperial records to record their brothers “lost”.

Virulent Space Marine dedicated to Nurgle

So im not having much luck on feedback so ill post my army fluff here. it hasnt been fleshed out into an actual story yet, more of just a story skeleton. but im looking for advice on it as ive never made army fluff before
So im working on the fluff behind my army, honestly just a way to con myself into actually painting it, and i was wondering if i could bounce some ideas off of daka. the basic outline as i have it now is this. the whole ted stabaddon thing is from an ard boys, i posted somehting in the fluff section, but it summarizes as if i call him ted/stabaddon he rolls amazingly but if i called the model abaddon he poo'ed himself or completely wiffed.
Ted was abaddon's "little brother" as much as horus aximond was "little horus". abaddon never felt ted measured up to what he saw himself as, and thusly degraded him and gave him crappy commands. Ted still looked up to him cause well they were "family" (and not yet all corrupted by chaos). During the great crusade abaddon was given orders to capture an enemy temple, the last bastion of resistance on that planet. Ted beat him to the heart of the temple, claiming the glory. unlike when whathisnuts from the first HH book beat abby to glory (cant remember the guys name for the life of me), he was enraged and nearly attacked ted. His "better" side won over though and instead of openly attacking ted he vowed to strike back at him in the future. the heresy happens blah blah blah lots of dead loyalists oh noes horus is dead lets run away. during the second black crusade abaddon decided it would be a good chance to rid himself of his "litte brother" and take some loyalists with him at the same time. he sent Ted to lead a contigent of iron warriors against an enemy stronghold. once Ted and the IW had taken out the defense lasers, abby blew the fortress at the remaining IW to kingdon come. Ted, along with his friend (no name yet but seargent/aspiring champ of a squad of IW) along with seven marines from another squad managed to survive deep inside the fortress. (those guys plus two rhinos make up my 500 point list) Ted emerges form the bombed out fortress to find the IW slaughtered by his own brother. he instanty turns the massive amount of love and respect into hatred and revenge and vows to one day amass the forces reqired to amke abby answer for it. kills the remaining defenders of the fortress to make himself feel better.
now obviously this is hastily and crapily written, its just the backbone of what i want the start of my story to be. there will be a few examples of his strong bond with the as of yet unnamed seargent of the IW and how he feels more at home with them etc. up till now covers the start of my painting journey and should get 500 of my 25k painted.... yeah i have a long way to go but thats what happens when you used to switch what chaos army you play every few months. haha. my plan to bring it to a 1k list is him finding scattered survivors of the bombardment and a miraculously intact line breaker squad. one vindi is still busted beyond his skills of repair though. they then take a l"ightly" defended civilian starport stealing a ship and leaving with the tanks and whatever additions make my list 1k points (everyone else will conveniently die in the assualt ).

I think the issue people are having with commenting on your fluff Steve is that Abaddon isn't part of the Iron Warriors, he I guess, would be a Son of Horus at the time of the Heresy and I assume 'Ted' would be as well.
Why would Abaddon send 'Ted' off with Iron Warriors?

Majja Jenerel Skullpunta'z Blitz Brigade
Skullpunta rose to prominence in the death world jungles separating Armageddon Prime from Armageddon Secundus. A promising Blood Axe nob, he slaughtered his way up and down and through many a base with his kommando krew and developing what he called "Da Burna Blitz", gaining him much notoriety and even having him work with the infamous Boss Snikrot from time to time.
As Ghazzy plunged Armageddon back into the Third War for Armageddon, Skullpunta and his boyz took a lickin' something fierce their first time out in the wastes. Their usual guerilla tactics just didn't hack it out in the open. Being the clever Blood Axe he is, Skullpunta initiated "taktikul retreat, formashun wazza." They legged back as fast as they could.
While he got his boyz patched up, Skullpunta watched the battlefields. Seeing a Speed Freak warband blitz across the ash wastes, watching the artillery shells land just behind where the trukkers were as the deffkoptaz cut into tanks, he had an idea. A wonderful orky idea. He beat the stuffing out of their boss an' told them they were his boyz now.
Initially the boyz weren't fond of da trukks or da koptaz. " 'Ow am I gunna sneak up on 'umies?" "Red ain't sneaky" "Dat's too noisy" "I like da dakka on dis one." To counter these morale issues, they were painted green. Kommando Kamo green. Then the boyz loved em.
After hiring a mek with pyromaniacla tendencies to keep da vehicles in shape an' da burna boyz in line, the blitz brigade was born. Da boyz would rip across da battlefield and da koptaz would rip into 'eavy gunz just as Skullpuntaz kommandoz burst from their cover an' started bustin' skullz. It almost brought a tear to Skullpuntaz cybork eye to see.
Skullpunta is currently engaged in and around the border of Armageddon Secundus. His warband is currently on the rise and always expanding, attracting more and more attention to be bought out as a screening force for da big push. As always, the Blitz Brigades motorpool seems to only grow larger from a few trukks an deffkoptaz to now include a full fleet of trukks, a wing of deffkoptaz, a burgeoning buggy brigade, the firomaniakal big mek's personalized looted Hellhound, Skull Punta's personal battlewagon and they even seem to be prototyping a VTOL trasnport.

he sent him off with them after the heresy, during the second black crusade. he knew he was going to blow them up after they took out the defensive lasers and didnt want to send his own troops, plus the IW are better at getting to those lasers due to their seige warfare. could be he sent the ones who were iffy on abaddon calling the shots, but not so iffy that they wouldnt take part in the crusade. the reason he choses to become an IW after his legion betrays him is one he was with them and two he established bonds with the IW that he never made with his own legion, especially with the as of yet unamed seargant.
i should have been more clear, he was originally with the sons of horus/black legion but once he was betrayed he joined the IW, whom he always felt more at home with. he leads them by the fact that he got them off the planet and promises them revenge.

If I'm honest, one 'rule' I personally always adhere to is to never involve official characters within your own lore except, possibly, as a rare, distant mention. It can sound terribly 'corny' to associate your characters closely with official ones, as though you're tagging along with them for reflected glory. But thats just my opinion.
For myself, my personal army, I have an article about them here.

"AM are bunch of half human-half robot monkeys who keep tech working by punching it with a wrench And their tech is so sophisticated that you could never get it wrapped it out" thing a LITTLE to seriously. It also goes "Tau tech is so awesome I wish I was Tau and not some stupid Human" thing.

I will just write a rough summary of my Orks fluff.
A Mutated Virus Bomb hits the home world posioning everything and dooming it to a slow death. Beta-Alpha class Shaman keeps his retinue alive through Endless Waaagh Energy effectively meaning they need to be In constant battle. More flock to his name due to the fact he can elongate their time alive and that he finds good fights.
Will need tweaking more though but thats the genral Fist.

My Imperial Guard army which I'm about to start is going to be a joint taskforce of Imperial Guard elite, led by Major General Gilbertan Sullivan, decorated for his actions in battle against the Pirates of Praetoria.

The Kasrkin were just men. It made their actions all the more astonishing. Six white blurs, they fell upon the cultists, lasguns barking at close range. They wasted no shots. One shot, one kill. - Eisenhorn: Malleus |

I've had to change much in my Imperial Guard army when the 5th edition released, but I still think it is rather unique from the 'uber-mensch' regiments that most Guard players faun over: The Caspian Reserves were a new, founding regiment from an Agriworld so small its first tithe was a little over two companies worth of men. These men were farmers; herding grox and hunting Tchubal Wolves, trading in fruits and livestock and building settlements from wood and plascrete. Sprinkled among them were their sons, too young to shepherd grox, but perfect (according to the Munitorum and Administratum) to carry a rifle and bayonet. At first these farmers were little more than confused men in a war-torn Segmentum, and despite their training from Tallarn and Harkoni regiments still behaved as if it were another day on their farms. Armed with their homeland las-locks and and humbling prayers to the Emperor on their lips, and with wagon-hitched, machine-salvaged artillery, the Caspian Reserves first taste of combat against the larger infestations of Hrud. Centuries of hunting primary Predators on Caspia has given her Guardsmen exceptional marksmanship, easily placing shots where a Cadian Pattern LasRifle often bucked over. Despite their talents, the Caspian Regiments were considered little more than star-bound PDF to other, far older Regiments. This was made painfully aware when the Ork Teef Snatcha' led his Waaagh! invasion into the Preaxidae System. Familiar with hunting animals, these farmers and huntsmen were not prepared for these towering Orks that were tougher and meaner, running through an entire enfilade of las-lock fire and chopping through their shambled artillery. Not only were the Caspians suffering heavily losses, but their weapons were starting to show their quality; the Artillery broke itself apart after prolonged salvos, rifles began to rust shut. Yet despite losing two of their beginning Regiments to the Orks, they still intone their single mantra: "I serve the Emperor and the Emperor protects." Despite their morale at its lowest, the Caspian farmers knew that setbacks were a way of farmlife and good farmers worked beyond them. And so they did. Colonel Ivan Braum collected his Regiment, re-armed his men, and chanted the Caspian Reserves mantra. Depending on fortune was what poor farmers did, and Braum would not be found wanting. But the Emperor works in mysterious ways. Colonel Braums Regiment, the last of the Caspian Reserve, soon found themselves deploying onto a massive Space Hulk dubbed 'The Ruinous Shamble' with four Regiments of Cadian, Harkoni, Terrax, and Mordian Guard along with a contingent of Space Marines from the Salamanders Chapter. The other commanders laughed at Braum as he unloaded his artillery pieces within an enourmous hangar of the Hulk, saying that even a simple farmer would know that they were next to useless. Braum shrugged at them and volunteered to Guard their landing zones saying his mantra under the rumble of laughter; "I serve the Emperor and the Emperor protects." But Braum had already been thinking ahead. Instead of using Adeptus Mechanicus Warheads, he melted down metal scrap into solid warheads and then sheathed them in liquid ceramite. He ordered his artillery crew to carry the auspex's the other regiments were using and issued his next curious invention; a ad-hoc radar from the deep water scanners they had used to find underground water on Caspia. Everything was ready. Soon the Space Hulk 'Ruinous Shamble' was teeming with Genestealer activity and the other Imperial forces were being assailed from all directions. The Salamanders had found themselves between a Hive Tyrant and a Chapter Relic, and ready to commit they're brothers to the Emperor when the strangest thing happened. A shell, about as thick as a Space Marines torso, slammed through the wall adjacent to the monstrous creature, punching through its chitinous hide and liquifying its innards as the shell exited its carcass into the neighboring wall. The other Guard Regiments were reporting the same thing as well. Monstrous Creatures that were ready to rend entire platoons simply died from these strange shells. To their surprise, the Caspain Reserves had fired their artillery into the Hulk, their special ceramite shells punching through decks and armor plating with relative ease. The gunners simply keyed in on the Auspex's and used their strange radar to 'guess' (as the Imperials were later horrified to discover) where the Tyranid Monsters were. But Braum retained his lack-luster composure, "I server the Emperor and the Emperor Protects", despite showing unprecedented forethought and enginuity and assured the other Guard Regiments that "It was just a fluke," on his part. The Salamanders, however, saw through his demeanour and gave exalted word to Inquisitor Alexi Peytz. Throughout later enagements the accolades grew; the Space Wolves were amused at the Caspian Reserves' use of tyranid corpses to make shanty gun pits and parapets, the Ultramarines recognized the Regiment destroying the Renegade Titan Oleris by using a "really big sinkhole", prompting the Inquisitor to elevate the Regiments status. By the time the Caspian Reserves raised another three Regiments, they were no longer equipped with what their homeland provided. Each man was issued a Vestoyga Pattern Las-Lock, Flak Jackets, and Helmets. Instead of scrap-salvaged, wagon-drawn artillery, they were issued Vestoyga Pattern Medusa Siege Cannons with their improved radar auspex's. The experience of the First Caspian Regiment was taught and trained. Commissars were common among the Infantry. Colonel Braum became Caspia's first Hero. His exploits were not as verbose as other Imperial Guard Regiments, but memorable none-the-less. The Space Wolves had especially taken a shine to him, gifting him a Fenrisian Cub as a sign of the greatest respects, and for recognizing his efforts during their joined campaigns. "I serve the Emperor and the Emperor protects."
