Pile of Necron Spare Parts

Hi I am new to the site as well as to WH40K. I am starting with the Necron army and am currently building a starter 500pt list. I am starting small to be able to learn the rules, get comfortable using the necrons, etc.
The current list is:
1 Imotekh the Stormlord
12 Necron warriors (2 squads of 6 each)
1 squad of scarabs (3 units)
My question is that since I currently am trying to keep my army small so that I can learn the ropes can I still field the scarabs at 500pt? I am tryingt to work with the minimum with what I bought. What should I aquire next to help build my army, should I look at vehicles or fast attack or elites? Should I get the Necron Lord barge so that I can kill 2 birds with one stone? Or should I worry about expanding my warrior count and add a unit fo Immortals.
Thanks so much for the input.

If i was you I wouldnt use such an expensive special character in a 500 point list. You could buy the Imotekh model and just use him as a generic overlord until you get to higher point leves.
Spending half your points on a single model is a really bad idea.

While using him as a generic lord, What wargear should I put on the lord and what extra units should I invest in. I am currently building my army, and would like to be able to play a quick round this coming weekend. What units should I buy in order to have something solid but also easy to learn the ropes with?

My favorite probably has to be:
Overlord - Command Barge, Warscythe
But it entirely depends on how you want to play the guy. You have any ideas on that?

As a newbie to necron and 40k as a whole. I would presume a balanced army/ lord so that I could survive as much as possible. With the Necorns ability to already re-rez would the orb of ressurection be necessary? I will be getting more characters this weekend. Most likely warriors and maybe a box of immortals, just to cover my soldiers base and work from there.

I don't actually play crons (until I've finished my Dark Eldar at least ) but having read through the codex a couple times I'd suggest a resurection orb and warscythe as a half decent starting point.
Then I'd just increase the size of your Warrior and Scarab squads. If you've got points left after that then maybe add in a cryptek?

Nungunz - for the overlord, Couldn't I use remaining points and buff the overold with extra options i.e- warscythe, res orb, tachyone arrow, etc, just make him extra buff in close combat?

I think for my first 500 (503, actually) points or so, I did:
Necron Overlord (1)
Warscythe
Catacomb Command Barge (1)
Gauss Cannon
Necron Immortals (10)
Tesla Carbines
Necron Immortals (9)
Gauss Blastesr

Pretty Sweet, Radar. Given that I have only 12 warriors with 3 scarrabs, 1 stormlord (can be used as overlord) currently- so far would I am planning on buying another warrior set (12 warriors + 3 scarrabs). I roughly calculated that if i played with:
1 overlord -no additional options
24 warriors
6 scarrabs
the point total would be 522. Is that still considered 500 pt. At which point do you round up to the nearest point total i.e 750, 1000, etc.
Also should I buy 2 boxes of warriors so that I can max out my warriors at 20 units each per squad and be set with warriors and then add immortals? Is there a max cap as to how many infantry units/ squads you can field in the rule book or is it just until you reach the point limit and squad max? Sorry if that question doesnt make any sense.

Yeah, there's a cap.
2x HQ
3x Elite
6x Troops
3x Fast Attack
3x Heavy Support
It's all in the BRB. I'd recommend giving it a glance. 1x HQ and 2x Troop choices are compulsory. Always gotta' take those.
Sorry, I didn't catch that you were only working with Warriors/Scarabs for now.
You could do:
Necron Overlord (1)
Warscythe
Catacomb Command Barge (1)
Gauss Cannon
Necron Warriors (10)
Gauss Flayers
Necron Warriors (10)
Gauss Flayers
Canoptek Scarabs (4)
Which puts you exactly at 500 points. I'd highly recommend a Catacomb Command Barge, they're pretty awesome.

Hey Radar,
when you say 6x Troops are you refering to a squad of 20 warriors (120 warriors) total? sorry for getting so detailed. Just trying to wrap my head around all the nitty-gritty. When i was at the store the guy told me i could buy an stormlord and use him as a stand in for an overlord for the time being or use him as a stormlord, but that would keep my warrior squad count low, due to him being so expensive. Should i buy a box of peatorians, lynchguard, or deathmarks. I kind of feel like keeping everything as a long range gun battle, but the lynchguard or preatorians could help make it more balanced for cllose and long range.
