My small group of friends (about 7 of us) play for fun. 1 of which is very competitive. I admire his skills and passion when it comes to 40k but I think its too much when we get to the games. I guess that I bring my mentality from my golf game. I haven't been playing for as long as any of them but I learned quickly that this game is for fun. I mean, we spend our friday nights from 5pm to sometimes 5 am Saturday morning hanging out and playing 40k. We allow a ton of proxies. Its just for fun.
So Dakka, fun or serious?

I play for fun when there's just friends. But when a pro or a rival turns up I get my game face on.
I've even had the privelige of playing against someone who plays for england at the Brighton branch of GW.
I lost...... Miserably :(

This a game meant to be played the "beer and pretzels" way. It's not meant to be hyper-competitive and perfectly balanced. It's supposed to be a way to hang out with a few buddies and roll some dice for an evening. I have no problem with people who play competitively, but it's kind of ridiculous given the nature of the game.

I play for fun, and its always a good chuckle. If I was to play in a tournament, I might be a bit more serious about thring to win, but I wouldn't let it get in the way of having fun. The fun is the most important part of the game.

Fun. It is, after all, a game.
Watching people get all nerd-rage at tournies is great fun, if only to remind yourself that you never want to be that bad.

I have to have fun or I wouldn't do it. I think sometimes people takes this game way to seriously but I guess that's in everything. I have a few close friends I play with and were always laid back. I got my girlfriend to play and you have to take it easy and have fun when your playing teams with her. She tries so hard but has a complete lack of tactics but her fruity back story for her orks and sound effects make up for it.

Fun first and foremost. I play in tournaments at my FLGS but even then it's just to test myself against new opponents and different armies. If I rank in the tournament it just means I was doing well that day.

You're trying to create a distinction where none exists. Everybody who plays 40K plays for fun. It's a game. If it wasn't fun, they wouldn't play it.
There is no arbitrary scale to gauge a player's level of seriousness, no cut off point where you're no longer 'playing for fun'. The casual gamer who cares more about pretty models or pushing his battlewagon around the board making 'Vroom! Dakka Dakka!' noises is playing for fun. The win-at-all-costs player who spends all his free time reading the rulebook, min-maxing his army list and looking for every last scrap of advantage for his games is playing for fun. It's simply what each player considers the fun way to play the game that differs.

I've just ran into the guys that get so upset when things don't go their way. For instance, a friend lost 2 razorbacks due to the storm lord thing from a neuron's player. He forgot that just the week or two before, he took out over 200 points of some serious firepower on his first turn. I just have a hard time seeing how emotions can get so high.

Everyone plays for fun? What about those of us who play because the crack that is warhammer is such a strong addiction that we have no choice. We cry ourselves to sleep at the fact that warhammer has taken over our very lives and we dream of one day ending the vicious cycle of game after game with sweet release by choking down a bottle of zip kicker and super glue at the same time. What am I talking about? Sounds fun to me
I've played competitively and I play more now for fun-I use Chaos Marines and spend over 1000pts in troops alone. If that's competitive, I'll eat my foot. Not my shoe, my foot. I run 2 units of Noise Marines, at least 1 unit of berzerkers, and the last unit is either berzerkers or plague marines.

I read my Codex(es) and the BRB once a week, every Friday night before I go to bed(and hopefully play some games the next day). I tweak my army lists when I get an Idea on how to make it better. While winning is nice, I don't play to win. I play Soda and Pizza 40k (not old enough to drink and Pizza tastes better than pretzels) at the FLGS or with friends at either their house or my house when we get the chance. Since I do not get to play often, the only 40k activities I can do are reading the books, painting models, posting on dakka, and working on my army list.
Every once in a while, everything meshes together just right to were I can get some games in with friends and we all have fun no matter the outcome.

Frankly I see nothing wrong with people that get invested in a hobby, be it 40k, golf, "their" hockey team, whatever. When the high emotional investment is there, I'd go so far as to guess those are the probably the people having more fun, even when things are going bad. Even though they may not be having much enjoyment at that particular moment in time, the evidence they are having fun by being engaged in the hobby is written clearly on their face. Moreso then those that never get worked up at all, regardless of whether they show it on the outside or not.

Even though i have been collecting a while now ive only played a handful of games, probably less then 10, i have always play for fun. Its no good without fun and i dont really care whether i win or not. My problem though is that once i start getting the upper hand in a match it goes to my head and i get serious about wanting to win. To the point where its no longer fun for me.

Fun. In fact, just about everyone at my FLGS plays 40K to unwind I guess. They pretty much turn it into a social meeting. From their point of view, as long as something is dying, they are happy

Just joking. I would like to play more fun, but that would mean taking intresting unit combos and fielding crazy wack, which for Tau, never seems to work. The last few games I've played have 'been for fun', and tbo, ive been flattened over and over again. Not as much fun as its serposed to be.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it. |
