So yeah. Some Codices have unit that you can really (I mean REALLY) go to town on and upgrade to the eyeballs. What you end up with is the most ridiculously overpriced (points wise) models in your army. A couple of examples:
Space Marine Command Squad, mounted on bikes, all with Thunder Hammers, Plasma Guns, and Storm Shields. (This is legal...and in my gallery )
Vanguard Veterans all equipped with Thunder Hammers and Storm Shields. Except the Sergeant. Who has two Thunder Hammers. (Also legal)
Both of the example units cost a stupid number of points and are about as mathshammer intelligent as throwing a unit of Grots into close combat with Genestealers. In Second Edition.
So my question is this:
Have you built any insanely OTT units simply because you can, and have you tried them in games. I have a unit of 10 Vanguard Veterans on foot, all with TH/ SS, led by a chaplain, in a Land Raider, that I tried out in an Apocalypse game. They killed 20 Blood Angels and a couple of Sanguinary Priests, and a Baneblade. In one turn. This was insane, and awesome, and the point of this thread.
So I'm inviting you wonderful folks to post about any units you have, or have seen, where you've thought, "That is stupid, insane, ridiculous, and yet awesome."

I have done it with sw, gk, csm and the new necrons unfortunately a few times they didnt pan out and were absolutely annihilated and basically tabled me. When I first started playing back in the day I always thought this guy is 275 or whatever I must use! I have since changed my ways and built an actual list instead. lol
The necron one had 2 overlords(can't remember name) few court guys and a unit of immortals. Grossly expensive and was almost wiped out turn 1. The sw one had logan, arjac, etc.. that one just got avoided so again didn't pan out. Poor Abaddon got his landraider surrounded(immobilized) by ork boyz and left to rot. The Gk one havent tried but it definately fits the catergory so well see.

A friend of mine ran a unit of 10 Chaos Terminators with Mark of Khorne, tons of close combat weapons, and gave them all the champion upgrade. Another friend of mine once ran a unit of 20 Khorne Berserkers. The Terminators ended up in a massive fight with my Nob/Warboss deathstar that was pretty incredible, but those 20 Berserkers just got rapid fired to death by my Stormtroopers and some long range battle cannon shots.

The one I love is as follows (as used by my friend to great success last Sunday in a doubles game against Necrons & Dark Eldar);
Leman-Russ 'Vanquisher' Battle Tank with Pask as Commander. Hull lascannon, multi-melta sponsons, pintle-mounted Heavy Stubber.
Grand total of 245 points for one tank. But what a tank. He only got to fire the sponsons once because with that 72" range on the Vanquisher he was blowing transports and vehicles apart with ease.

I fully intend to build the 1500pt Coteaz + 40 Jokaero monkey armylist one day.Coteaz will be converted from a Jokaero. To expand it to 2k I want to do 'looted' jokaero stormravens and dreadknights, maybe more monkeys.
Main obstacle is money. Next year sometime maybe.
Also a 12+ Drop Pod army cos drop pods are cool.

Funny story about the farsight bomb, this guy who was playing a pick up game at my FLGS used a Farsight bomb. It was a tau army against some Marine army if I recall correctly, and it was turn 3, the critical turn to decide this particular game, and he dropped his farsight bomb. They deep struck right behind the enemy lines near the middle of the board. They take out a transport and fail to do anything else this turn. Marine players turn and after a hell of a lot of shooting he managed to insta kill one suit and leave farsight with one wound. Tau players turn he has them hop into terrain and they take a terrain test and...fail, Farsight looses his last wound and...they run off the board.

I once had Kairos Fateweaver injure himself on a tree and then fly away. I was playing Eldar.
200 years before, you can just imagine the quizzical looks as an Eldar Farseer travels to a distant planet, wanders around a bit, and drops an acorn on the floor.

Ork nobz can be a fairly OTT unit with all the upgrades (eavy armour, cybork, bosspose, ammo runt, PK/big choppa, combi-shootas, and all the rest).
Not that I can see a pimped-out nob squad being any more effective than a properly diversified one...

I have played an actual game using 30 Jump Pack Death Company, 5 Power Fists, and the rest have Power Weapons against an ork KFF list. Also had a librarian and a minimum 5 man assault squad. It was limited to only this cause he was playing 2000 points...
Ork Turn 1 - Move up all three Battlewagons, both trukks, leaving the 10 Deffkoptas in reserve
BA Turn 1 - Charge, blow up a battlewagon with power fists.
Ork Turn 2 - All infantry models on the table minus the KFF Mek (80 some orks, and 8 nobz with pain boy) charge Death Company. Death Company wins by nine, runs down the entire army in Sweeping Advance.
BA Turn 2 - Charge Trukk. Trukk asplodes.
Ork Turn 3 - Defkoptas make it on the table. Shoot and kill a few Death Company.
BA Turn 3 - Librarian makes Defkoptas run off the table. Death Company asplodes a Battlewagon.
Ork Turn 4 - RUN AWAY!
BA Turn 4 - Librarian makes the other squad of Deffkoptas run off the table. Last Battlewagon asplodes.
Ork Turn 5 - RUN AWAY!
BA Turn 5 - Death company comes within centimeters of charging the remaining KFF and trukk. Exit stage left.
1700 pts of Death Company..... disgusting.... until they get hit with demolisher cannons.

It was a test of Death Company effectiveness, really. He had heard they were the best thing since sliced bread, while I looked at the stat line and said "Meh." Not points effective, and I don't like the whole being led by the nose aspect, but I can respect the might of having a ton of powerswords laying down 27+ wounds... after being charged.
And yes, it took about an hour and a half, and was hilarious.

I ran a hive Tyrant with almost every upgrade (notably Old Adversary), with three Tyrant Guard, each equipped with boneswords. This squad was shielded by one venomthrope, for cover.
The squad lost no models before smashing into 6-7 Terminators who were accompanied by a Captain. Who were all under the effects of Paroxysm.
If I recall correctly, I landed 15 of the 17 hits. At least 12 wounded... the look on my opponent's face when he realized that his 2+ saves meant nothing was hilarious. (Yes, I explained what Boneswords were before the game.)
The squad was wiped out, the Captain somehow surviving to the next combat phase -after missing all his attacks- where he was Instant killed by the Tyrant's Implant Attack.
It was great.

Mine was the Wolf Court - four Wolf Lords mounted on TWC, all stuck together in a unit. All of them with runic armor and storm shields, all of them differentiated (thunder hammer, wolf claw, 2 frost blades, one of which has meltabombs). Whole thing cost over 900 points for the unit. For the longest time, it also won me every game I played.
Then we switched to objectives and I quit winning.
