This was also my motivation.

But seriously i found it a challenging and fun hobby for creative output and strategic thinking.

Although 40k is really pissing me off recently.

I'm both orderly and rational. I value control, information, and order. I love structure and hierarchy, and will actively use whatever power or knowledge I have to maintain it. At best, I am lawful and insightful; at worst, I am bureaucratic and tyrannical.

The kid that I sat next to in High School Biology class played... he was the only one in that class that I really got along with or knew at all well (we had played paintball together in the past), we started talking, one day I caught him sketching some 40k related stuff (think it was a Space Marine shooting a Gaunt), we started talking about it, I looked into the hobby, it was right up my alley, so I bought into it and haven't looked back since

My older brother had miniatures (not GW) and I was into role-playing from my brother even when I was under 10. In '87 I went to a roleplaying convention in my city where a demo game of Rogue Trader was being run on a gigantic crashed spaceship table (like, the ship was the size of an office desk).

I spent all my money I had at the time on Imperial Army figures (AU$10 or less for a blister of 5 figures) and bought more each day I was at the con. Took them home each night and painted them in Humbrol enamel army greens with flesh and silver as appropriate. By the end of the con I had a good 25 or 30 figures. ...and that was that.

MtG was boring, even though I was like... 12 or something like that... Game store that we played at also had the wall of 40k and fantasy, so I got into it. Although back in those days (oh... 10 years ago almost) it seemed that everyone played fantasy, at least at the store.

I got into it because when I walked in the the Cambridge GW down on the Quayside in 1991 when I was 9 I saw a titan. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. Ironically though I never really got into Epic and have played it only a handful of times. The painting and modelling was where I got hooked majorly though

I saw my uni librarian painting his chaos army, asked if I could have a go at painting... ended up painting his whole chaos army over the course of several months between classes and got sucked in to playing with it as well during that time.

Then I read the A Thousand Sons book, fell in love with them, and started building my own Sons army.

I was 13, hanging out with some older girls that played Magic: The Black Hole of Money, and stopped by an indie game store with them, running into another friend who was into 40k and played Eldar. I asked him to point out something with a massive gun, and thus ended up with a blister pack of a storm trooper autocannon.
Not hooked then; but within was the standard 2nd-Ed 40k GW pamphlet with illustrations for all their games and armies. It had a boring Space Marine, a pretty Eldar, and what looked like the most badass OTT Space Marine ever:

Sadly this version that someone else has kindly popped on Dakka isn't in full colour like the original (which was half the attraction of it). I picked up a Chaos Codex and figured out the core rules from it, and it's been in my blood ever since. Nowadays I can give up buying minis but I can't give up Dan Abnett!

Run a whole lot of wfrp and other rpg's, play The Woods and Kill Team, gather and look mournfully at imperial guard knowing I'll never finish enough to use them on the tabletop

Ever since I was young enough to play with legos, I always thought the idea of playing a game of some sort would be cool. I went as far as writting down different types of lego ships you could build, with different HP values, weapon types, ranges, etc.

Then found out such a game already existed... but instead of using legos, you use plastic models (which I also liked building as a kid).

Of course, I was hooked from that point on. Its just something I've always been drawn to (tabletop gaming in general, 40k specifically because the backstory is cool).

Because all the cool kids were. Actually, a bunch of my friends played-I held out the longest, not wanting to waste the money on an expensive hobby (and that was when GW was CHEAP!!). 10 years later, I'm the only one who still plays 2 moved on, one can't play cause his girlfriend hates his man-dollies and the other two...well, we don't talk about them...

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

I played chess a lot as a child. Also my middle brother and I used to make boardgames when we where eght to twelve, so the interest in roleplay/fantasy elements was there.

The telling thing however, was a game we set up (which I have since discovered many other wargamers have done as well in their youth, which is bloody bizarre as its not something that is advertised anywhere.)
Where we would set up a battlefield using WW2 toys, mainly the troops, behind cars, trucks, walls etc, and then take turns throwing a marble or dice (or other small blunt object) until all the eneny models where hit. (Damn those lying down figs under vehicles where right sods.)

A good few years later when I was about fourteen in school I saw a White Dwarf with Adeptus Titanicus in it, and found what I had been searching for. Never looked back.
