hey there,

I just browsed the gallery a little and discovered something; if you sort all images by number of comments and count the pages until there are no more votes, and then do some math, you will find that only 7% of all images have a comment. And if you do the same with the votes, you will find that only 23% have got five votes..... hmm. People really like to upload stuff (me included), and then get depressed becaue they dont get any votes/ comments.

So now I'm asking you lot to do something about that! C'mon, go to the gallery now and vote for 10 random images. I often vote while waiting for answers in the forum, do the same! And tell others to do the same!

Ps: the shortet way to the gallery is to click on my profile where it says "42 gallery images"

I am. Although I think the purpose of the gallery is not to be another CMON, but to simply be an easier way to both view images and upload them into threads like Your Best Conversion Model.

Still, voting on things and leaving comments is a fantastic way to let people know what they did wrong, what they did right, and how they can do better.

Every now and then I will sit and rate images, but it does tend to get old quick. Though at least the gallery "random" image function is better than it used to be.

Yeah, i guess its part this part that. I've seen countless threads with people whining about them not getting any votes or comments.....

I don't really bother to take and upload pictures, anymore, due to a general lack of interest among Dakkanauts in using the gallery, itself, as a feedback system. Practically, I think most see it as McNinja stated - a forum tool for conveniently feeding threads with pictures.

Still, since it's not what I would like it to be, I do my small part to nudge it towards that ideal by voting. I tend to toss the turbovoter up every now and again in the background while I'm surfing (Dakka or elsewhere) and vote in 5-10 image bursts, in between other activities/threads. If I'm up for it, I'll use the "need more votes" images only option (which is far more tedious, but I honestly do remember when I was new, tossing up that handful of images of my first painted models and waiting desperately for that 5th vote).

I hardly ever look at the gallery anymore since it changed, Used to be so easy to see all apoc pics by clicking apoc or all fantasy pics by clicking fantasy. The search dosnt seem that great.

I often feel awkward about leaving a comment because you can see the score I've given. Usually I only comment when I've given a high score.

Edit: I thought it only showed the score if you voted then commented.

It is also good to add tags to images to help with the search function.

I generally attempt to vote/tag a few images everytime I get on the site, recently I've been getting on my mobile device, and as such, have had a lil more difficulty doing that, but I find a little bit at a time is the best way to do it.

Where is that option? I looked for it, but must be missing it.

Nevermind, I figured it out.

I posted quite a few votes this afternoon with the help of my 18 month old son. He love da Orkses.

Ive voted many times. Now and then I cruise the gallery. I usually only vote on the things that need votes...if they aready have a rating, especially a high one, I usually dont bother to vote.

I would like to mention that if a person wants to encourage more votes for their images, tagging is crucial. E.G. if I'm looking for 'Ork' 'Battlewagons' in the Gallery and someone's image of a amazing looking Ork Battlewagon isn't tagged with 'Ork' or more importantly 'Battlewagon' the chances of me stumbling across that image is extremely low.

Additionally if more people would disable voting for images that don't need it (battle report, unconverted unpainted figures, stock images, etc.) it would be easier to vote on the images that actually need votes.

I check the gallery everyday. If an image in not worth rating (a blurry pic or pic for a tutorial) i don't vote or comment.

But i do agree that more people should be voting on the gallery instead / aswell as the painting showcase.

If I could filter the Gallery for images requiring votes I would happily do it and vote.

Somewhere in the steamy jungles of the south...

I am guessing that a large amount of the images that need more votes are mostly WiPs. Dakka really should make the "don't allow voting on this image" option the default. This way only finished models could be voted on. It sure would help with clutter.

Just to chime in here, if you don't know I'm the gallery mod and I review something like 99% of the images that are posted.

My policy is:
Delete anything too blurry to see, sideways or off topic
Disable anything that does not have an actual model in it

if you see something that should be deleted please tag it with 'delete' and I'll check it sooner or later.

I know Lego is looking for ways to better integrate the gallery, forum and articles but it may be some time away.

Thanks Mr Merlin for crunching the numbers, I'd never looked at them and it is interesting.

As others said votes are important to make sure the cream rises to the top. Tags are even more imporant so people can find what they are looking for.

Interesting that people miss the tag cloud, I alway thought it was a bit of an eyesore. What do people think, should it come back?

Please do tag early and often! Without tags who will find your work!

I agree, some are cool enough to warrant a painting score of 0/0 and go with coolness alone if it is an unpainted conversion. But others are stuff like primed marines.

If it is an unpainted conversion (well, model in general) I use the N/A slot for painting, as I doubt they intend to leave the model unpainted, and just give them a rating for coolness.

Primed unconverted models is something I prefer to disable all voting on but when I review images for posting I only see thumbnails so I usually don't disable voting since there might be some subtle conversion I'm missing.

I do kill voting for the clearly useless ones like black primed models shot with no lighting (to name an example from yesterday)

We need people (including myself) to get more involved. I posted pics of my Exalted Vermin Lord which my friend painted and while there were a few comments in the thread praising the work, no votes are yet cast in the gallery itself. :(

I guess I should start taking some time now and then to cast votes. Less hypocracy that way, at least.

Hey, KK, since I'm being prompted for keywords to add, would it be of any use to use the word "blurry" in cases of blurry phots?

I used to use blurry (which is auto-changed to blurred picture) but then decided it wasn't useful since no one goes looking for blurry pictures.

If a picture is a bit blurry but still useful then it should stay, maybe with voting disabled.

If it's too blurry then it should be tagged delete, nothing further is needed.
