I almost never get that experience and I've been an exclusive console gamer for the past 6 years. If you've got a day off and try to play in the morning in the US, you're likely to get connected to a European host with some lag (not due to the crappiness of the connection necessarily but just the georgraphical distances involved) and I'm sure the reverse is possible for you late at night (evening for the US). The only connections that are unplayable for me are hosts in Asia or Australia/NZ as those distances are just too far (the same would be true in the PC setting for this). Most multiplayer console games either have an indicator next to the host's name/game that shows you the strength of the connection or automatically choose the best host for the majority of the people joined. The systems aren't perfect but they do work 90%+ of the time, which is acceptable to me. In the average multiplayer shooter evening session of several hours on the xbox, I might run into a noticeably laggy game once or twice max and they usually aren't as bad as what you're describing (those are once or twice a week).

If I remember right a full set of green bars just means you have under 200 ping, which is still extremely high. Games like CoD do a pretty good job of "masking" the lag, but you can't deny host advantage, if a good player gets host it's all over for the other team. Another great advantage of dedicated servers is community, when I played WaW I had maybe 5? servers on my favourites list that were always populated and always had at least one admin on the server keeping things clean and tidy, it's nice knowing all the regulars whereas with P2P you just get plopped wherever and you have no say in the matter.

Either way, the PC standard is dedicated servers, it would be like if McDonald's started serving their burgers without buns.

The question isn't why do I kill. The question is, why I don't kill everybody.

Hmm, pretty sure in all my years of playing Halo, I've never really had a problem with lag or host advantage.

Something like gears did a really bad job with host advantage, so basically it is up to Relic's networking code.

I'd be pretty surprised if dedicated servers were available on PC; but hey, I guess you can hope. They certainly won't be running the servers though.

I've given up all hope, it's pretty obvious it will be P2P otherwise they would have said so, they're just hiding the fact as they know it will upset the PC community.

Well, there are advantages to p2p as long as its done well. Problem is on PC, its rarely done well.

MW2 is a prime example of why you don't have P2P servers on PC, that gak was brutal. Nearly every game had severe rubber banding which made it impossible to play.

Like I said, its rarely well done.

Not to mention with the breadth of hardware that PCs can have, its very hard to predict who would be the best host.

Hopefully relic came up with some awesome way to get a decent PC host.

That is indeed one of the biggest issues. Back when MW2 was new I had a top of the line PC with a 24mb/1.4mb connection, which was and still is better than most, considering the average upload sync is like 0.5mb or less. Yet I would be passed over as host and everyone would lag to hell and back. Whenever I got host everyone said it was brilliant, but even my connection isn't enough to host a perfect 8v8, but the big difference between my connection and most peoples is it's stable, so there's no rubber banding or "noticeable" lag. Fast doesn't mean stable, and stable is more important once you reach a certain upload speed, so even if the game picks the guy with the most upload speed it doesn't guarantee the best performance.

Maybe in 10 - 20 years P2P will be viable when everyone is on 100/100 fibre connections like the Swedes, but most people are still rocking copper in the UK and it's just not good enough.

The question isn't why do I kill. The question is, why I don't kill everybody.

It's sad how some countries are both the fastest and cheapest, the US is slightly ahead of the UK, but frankly we both suck.

I really wish the PC version had dedicated servers though as I'm very much a MP gamer.

What exactly are dedicated servers? Also, will the multiplayer be run though STEAM?

So, if the multiplayer is still really good even though it will be P2P, are you still going to complain?

WTF the multiplayer is pay to play??????????

While I'd assume the MP will be run through steam if you buy it there (I believe thats a general rule they have), I don't know about other sources of the PC running through steam or not. As for dedicated servers, its when the "host" is a company's server. When you're playing p2p (peer to peer), some normal guy/girl with their home connection and computer is "hosting" the game. The fear is that his/her connection is spotty or the computer isn't fast enough to communicate well with all the people who join.

As for the last part, all multiplayer is pay to play since you're supposed to buy the game first. They don't have a special charge for multiplayer separate from the purchase of a new copy of the game. If you buy a used copy, there might be a special surcharge to access multiplayer as publishers have been doing that to make some money directly on used game purchases.

What about that Elite pass crap?

P2P in this situation means peer to peer, not pay to play.

Peer to Peer hosting is where one player is the host for all the other players in the game. Dedicated servers are where there is a... you guessed it... dedicated server which hosts the game.

The "elite pass" THQ does is best shown in how it effected Homefront on consoles (it had no effect on PC gamers). If you bought Homefront new, you had access to the entire game as your CD key is tied to your account on PSN or XBL. If you rented or bought used, you had access to all the single player and the multiplayer up to level five or ten (forgot which), at which point you'd stop leveling up, but you'd still have full access to multiplayer. You'd just not gain any XP beyond level ten.

The elite pass is pretty much a way for a company to screw more money out of people. If me and my bro bought one copy of a game that requires a pass for online play then one of use would either need to buy another copy of the game(since my bro doesnt stay with me) or spend say £5-8(i dont know exact price) just to be able to play online.

So far all the games that require an elite passes that iv bought have either been brand new or i dont plan to play them online anyway.

When the rich rage war it's the poor who die

Armies I have: Chaos Space Marines, Tau, Necrons, High Elves

Armies I want:Lizardmen, Warriors Of Chaos, Dark Eldar

Armies I may get: Dark Angels, Tomb Kings, Vampire Counts

If by saying 'a way for a company to screw more money out of people' you mean 'a company not making any profit from used game sales from gamestop and the like' then you would be correct.

Indeed, I haven't really seen anyone complain about the sound quality, well apart from the awful Orks voices.

At least their voices aren't the comic relief of the game a la DoW. They actually seem threatening in Space Marine.

True, the first DoW anyway. In DoW2 they weren't comic relief, they were guttural brutes.
