Jeebus. One BoLS article and everyone loses their mind!

Why not? Anything is possible, and if they have Morathi become the new Slaanesh it wouldn't be that jarring.

Because Morathi doesn't exist in 40K and there is no way GW is getting rid of dual-game range with twice as many customers as most of their boxes?

Look at Nurgle/TSons, multiple fantasy kits were added to 40K lists to broaden their appeal, and now they would do the complete reverse with major range?

They could still do Slaanesh dual releases for 40k if they wanted to, the demon models wouldn't need to change, they would just be complimented by Morathi and DoK in AoS.

Of course it's possible that the Slaanesh figures in the video are just being used as generic enemies and there's no greater significance. But they are featured very prominently which suggests that Slaanesh is going to be very important to what they're doing with Morathi.

Well, Slaanesh is in line to get a big release in the near future. Therefore it makes sense to feature Slaanesh in the background of the new faction, to create a link with the future Slaanesh release.

Personally I won't be holding my breath on that one. Two new aelf factions is probably too much to hope for, and despite the persistent rumours of sea-themed cthulu aelves I don't see any evidence that this is something GW was ever actually planning to do. I could be wrong, but haven't all the rumour-engine images that people claimed were sea-aelves turned out to be other things? It seems like people have seen what GW did with the Kharadon Overlords (SKY DWARVES!) and assumed that SEA ELVES! are the next logical step.

Keep in mind that we do have an actual "aelf standing on a tentacle" model. So it's not so "out there" as one might think.

Spoiler:

Calling that "aelf standing on a tentacle" is a bit of a stretch. It could be a tentacle or it could be some weird vegetation. It never explicitly gets called out as to what it is.

But yeah, the "SEA ELVES!" rumors started up when the tentacle for the Necromunda objective set got previewed. At that same general time, Harry or Hastings(can't remember exactly which) made a comment about Aelves having a "Lovecraftian vibe" and people immediately assumed "CTHULU AELVES!".

It's a common issue with rumors when things are years out and people use vague terms like "Lovecraftian vibe".

Maybe they were wrong to say Saturday.

Its strange that GW dont show the news at the end of the seminar.

I don't recall the timeline exactly, so I may be wrong about this, but the Warhammer Community article doesn't go up immediately after the seminar. First we get to enjoy reports and shaky pictures from the seminar before we get glossy high quality pictures in the related article. There's nothing to stop GW from having a seminar on Thursday and an article on Saturday.

Also keep in mind that Americans live in the past, so depending when on Saturday the article goes up, it may be no more than 28 or 29 hours after the event. That's not a massive gap.

Slaanesh is going nowhere

That's a really poor way of phrasing it. Far be it from me to criticize Slaanesh for taking a vacation in Tyrion's torture cellar, but you know, work keeps piling up and somebody's got to bring joy to the Mortal Realms. Would be cool if Slaanesh did in fact go somewhere, eventually.

Exactly. Cthulu sea elves isn't an implausible direction to go in but there's no actual evidence that's their intention. And yet because the rumour has been repeated so often it's taken on the status of fact in a lot of people's minds.

Can we please stop conflating "Lovecraftian" and "Cthulhu"? You are aware that Lovecraft wrote stories about many, many gods, and others continued the work long after his death. Cthulhu was only one of many gods in a dark pantheon. Call of Cthulhu wasn't even his best work. "Lovecraftian" refers to an entire genre of fiction known as cosmic horror. Anything to do with ancient gods, unseen horrors, or just the general entropic decay of the universe is Lovecraftian.

Sorry. As a long-time Lovecraft fan, it's grating to constantly hear his name associated with only one story.

Wasn't Hastings talking about Lovecrafterian Elves bevor the Necromunda Tentacle was shown? somehow I remember that the whole Cthulhu elves was fuelled bey that said tentacle and the existence of a Lovecrafterian elves rumour.

But yeah, Lovecrafterian Elves was always much more and different to me than the interpretation of Cthulhu Elves - more an eldritch horror than a tentacle hung deity thing.

Like I said, I can't recall exacting details just that it was around the same time. Because like you said--the whole Cthulu Elves "rumor" picked up more and more steam once we saw that tentacle.

What's weirder is that people invented that he said Lovecraftian and not Cthulu - then told people off for saying Cthulu Aelves

"Cthulu/Deep One Aelves " is the quote.

I see what you did there - and I approve!

And given the hints involving tentacles and an octopus (allegedly), well, it is too easy to shout out H.P.'s most famous creation.

Besides, it is just shorthand, and more easily understandable to many.

It's precisely because Call of Cthulhu has elements that are distinct from the rest of Lovecraft's work that people latch onto that term to describe what they're anticipating out of this release. Calling them 'Lovecraftian' is simply too generic a term.

In fact, GW draws a lot on Lovecraft: Genestealer Cults are Innsmouth in Space, C'Tan were originally described as unknowable godlike othernesses beyond the more Moorecock influenced chaos gods, and frankly the story of a gifted mathematician able to calculate a specific angle so precisely it allows her to slip between dimensions is so in line with how they characterize Tzeench I wouldn't be surprised if that exact character appears somewhere in the annals of the Black Library.

Maybe I was too subtle. They say Cthulu because the original rumour was for Cthulu/Deep One Aelves and NOT Lovecraftian Aelves.

Thanks very much, so a few bits to mull over.........

I don't think Dark Elves will exist any more, at least not in the current aesthetic, I think the Cthulu/Deep one Aelves coming out way are meant to be a shadowy almost swings both ways army, they're certainly dark anyway from what I understand, I'm expecting to see them at Adepticon next week with a release either later this year or at the beginning of next year. You'll have to forgive me but I've been out of the loop for a while.

He mentions it several times. Disqus is really unpleasant to get history from so if you want to find the rest, you're welcome to.

Edit: here's the first mention of them:

I think he only had them described to him too, so it could mean anything. I don't know if it's these Morathi Aelves or the other Shadowkin that he's describing (though I seem to remember him saying the WHQ Aelves didn't match what he had heard)

Perhaps the Slaaneshi/Snakey Aelves are what he's describing

Is he? Not having models and featuring heavily in the narrative=/=releases. If it did we'd be looking at a big SoB release and we're not. Slaanesh isn't coming anytime soon if ever, and Morathi will only be tangentially related. The one thing I will say about the whole thing is Morathi isn't going to be Chaos.

Yeah, she's a lot like her old model. Do like the atmosphere, and the fact her spear resembles the one used by medusae a bit.

Not a fan of the spikes on her boots though. Heh, will file them off when I'll get the model!

Also, flying scorpion-thingy in the first frame, and probably there's a scorpion tail poking in the bottom left corner in the last frame.

Hype!
