Hey dakka. Spent all night hunched over my computer waiting for a bid to end, but some snatched it away from me at the last two seconds! I should have bid higher! *grumble* Is it normal to want to sob hysterically into my pillow all night?

Anyway, I'm really bummed out and thought I'd make a thread about eBay bids you've LOST. It's healthy to tell other people of your inner pain at losing

The item tonight? An M42 gas mask. Commonly used by tank crews in the US army. Would be close to three hundred dollars some places. Would have been mine for 76....*hffgghhhhnn* Oh well, must not have been meant to be. I bought an Israeli m15 for 44 dollars though, and it's probably just as cool for my purposes.

Fire away.

I've lost quite a few auctions in the final seconds.

Butterfly statue

cards for a game called Anachronism (It's the greatest game in History)

Lost a bid for Battlelore base set about 3 or so months ago

A few limited edition miniatures

Back in 2005 I won an auction for the Axis and Allies miniatures starter from Gen-Con before it was officially released. I won the auction in the final seconds and the other guy bidding on it messaged me calling me a jackass or something like that. This was before bidding was anonymous.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I lose bids all the time. I snipe and get sniped.

The way I see it, if I win I win, if I lose i save my cash for the next purchase. I tend to eBay in batches, several items at once then nothing for a few months or even a year off on two ocassions.

I only buy hobby stuff on eBay and my hobby money is limited so if thing is not bought or goes beyond the price limit i set myself its a way of doing without.

All in all there are three philosophies to online auctions I follow.

1. Always be prepared to go without - you have no idea who else is bidding or how hungry they are for it.
2. Always only get a bargain - if the price rises above what it means to be a bargain stop bidding and let it go.
3. Make an early low bid - sometimes an auction lot slips through the system. I used to only snipe but I learned this one after items on my watch list ended without any bids. If I bid a little early who knows I might win.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Dude you always gotta use Auction Sniper. Its a bargin for the service it provides.

The item(s) i missed that im most pissed about was a big bitz box someone was selling. It had a whole heap of BFG and a Inquisitor model. Almost half and ork army and a metric feth ton of other gear. Probably close on about 5, maybe $600, if not more, worth of swag and it went from about $75 - $80. I got outsniped by only a few dollars. I raged for a little bit and then got over it.

I know some people that have bought them for airsoft (because they "look cool"). I never understood it though. I found it too restricting/blinding to effectively play the game.

Last week a guy had three squads of ten Seraphim up starting at 99p.

The all ended around the £30 mark, since buying them from GW would've been in excess of £80, that's quite the saving.

Part of me felt compelled to buy them just because of the value! And I was bidding but trailing off when it hit about £25. Atm I am only painting a few 'pretty' sisters models, not making an army, so I didn't want to commit like that. But I still wonder if I'll ever see that kind of deal again

I only use eBay for Warhammer btw.

Ebay really makes me crazy. I think I should stay away from it as long as possible. I need to master sniping though.

Only kidding. I still have my British Army issue gas mask in the cupboard somewhere. Came in handy when changing the baby's nappies.

I bought an m15 with a hose, as a compromise. Spent 44 on the mask and 9 on the hose. I think that's a good compromise for an M42.

My friend is getting into ebay. Should I encourage sniping?

I have two gas masks. One is the Israeli M15, I have its box and instructions and all the plugs and stuff to store is, paid £10 for it. They are pretty common place but make for a tight fit and fairly comfortable for a bit, they tend to get a bit hot though. I'm wearing it here.

The other I have is a British army S6, the classic SAS Iranian Embassy style, had it nearly 20 years. Although they were used by other countries I know mine is definitely British because I bought it from a militaria shop in Brecon, and he got it from a couple of kids who found it at the side of a road somewhere. Who knows, its the right part of the country, it might have been used by the SAS. But one thing is for sure, some soldier probably got chewed out for losing his kit.

It's a much higher quality than the more modern Israeli one. Around the inside edge of the mask is an inflatable tube that you can blow up slightly to get a snug seal around the face. The Israeli one just relies on you pulling the straps tight. The eyepieces are much larger too and there's more space around the face.

The worst gasmasks have to be the russian GP-5 and anything like them. They look fething horrible to me - ghastly tight rubber things you have to pull over your head like a gimp mask (interestingly it seems choice of gasmask for those into fetish wear online, check some of pictures in DeviantArt).

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I've stopped trying to play the snipe-and-be-sniped game on Ebay, I always found it lead to more dissatisfying losses than successes, and no matter the outcome the process always stressed me out. When it comes to Ebay bids now, I tend to spend a little while thinking about just how much I'm actually willing to pay for something, then set that as my maximum bid and leave it. I don't go back until the auction is finished, and then I see whether my bid won and if so how much it cost me. If it is less than my maximum bid, then I treat it as having been a bargain, since I spent less on it than I had originally committed myself to (even if it only by a few pence). In this way, I avoid the stressful aspect to bidding wars, and am always pleased with my purchases. If I don't win, I just reassure myself that it was therefore out of my price range, and is therefore not worth the having.

But at least your victories with 'sniping' will be great ones: I mean, sure, if we're going for someone who's done what you do, we won't make a saving, but not everyone puts their 'ceiling' as their first bid and 'sniping' means you can get some pretty good deals if people are inattentive.

Witch Hunter Inquisitor + retinue for £5? Don't mind if I do

Still, I think eBay need to revise the system to benefit the seller a little more; every bid should add one minute to the countdown until bidding is done.
