Is the Dakka Swap Shop a pretty solid place to trade, or is it filled with scammers?

I appologize if this has been asked before.

I personally prefer to trade from this Swap shop. Its quite easy too! I have had 4 successful trades here. There are ways to see if the person your are trying to trade with. 1 is to look them up in the reputable traders list http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/245859.page. You should also look up their profile, to see how engaging they are in the forums and galleries. Heres more info: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/247459.page

This. The very purpose of that thread is to give buyers/sellers/traders confidence to deal with their fellow dakkaites.

I think the Dakka swap shop works just like any other internet buying and trading site. Do your homework on the seller, if he's trying to sell you $3000 dollars worth of Forgeworld stuff, and only has 2 posts and wants you to send it as a gift

I sold my sister of battle army here on dakka back in july and had no problem with the buyer. But as always do your homework first. check out the good/bad traders list. Check out if the sell has had any transaction reports againsted him. Even if they have had some it doesn't necessarly mean they are a bad trader.

The one thing I can't stress enough is "If it's to good to be true, it usually is". Also all trades/sales are done privately between the buyer and seller and if the deal goes south dakka can not and will not replace stuff or lost money like ebay and paypal can. The mods and community will help you try to get your stuff but honestly its "Caveat Emptor" Let the buyer beware.

I forgot to mention i also have never hade a bad trade here either.
Just because i haven't, doesn't mean it can't happen.

Caveat Emptor. too true.

Also, always apply murphy's law, Assume the worst will happen. then it'll be less painful.

I've had 4 positive transactions through the dakka swap shop. 2 as a seller and 2 as a buyer. No bad transactions. I think it is a great place but as always with internet transactions, do what you can to protect yourself. Research the person on the reputable traders list and transaction report thread. Never send paypal as a gift (I admittedly did this once after some hard bargaining to drive the sellers price down, but they have over 50 reputable trades here so I felt safe and it wasn't a large dollar amount).

Also this is a good thread with swap shop tips:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/230269.page#566167

Also, do a favor to the mods and follow the swap shop rules (personally I'd be hesitant on dealing with someone that is regularly getting locked and edited):

There have been a couple of trades where I feel I should have known better but for the most part they people I've traded with have been solid guys who kept up their end.

I've got a pretty good sniffer when it comes to BS and if I think I'm catching a whiff, I'll drop the deal. I've only had to do that a handful of times here on Dakka, but otherwise my trading, selling, and buying experiences have been pretty good and I've had more than 30 by my last count.

I've not had a deal go bad that was originated here on Dakka. RiTides being my favorite customer so far! Hope you enjoy that drum!

The drum was amazing

I used to trade a lot more- unfortunately, having to kind of watch every bad trade or the like has made me much more cautious (or perhaps that's fortunate...).

Now, I usually stick to using Paypal, or doing trades of a low value. A while back I made several large purchases in the swap shop, but used Paypal, and did an army swap.

If people are unsure of a deal but still want to go through with it, I usually recommend the Bartertown-like practice of asking the other user to ship their end first. A simultaneous swap is the riskiest, from what I've seen... despite that, that's the kind I usually do given that they're for a low value, and for larger purchases I pretty much only use Paypal now. Finally stopped having so much turnover a few years ago, and am hanging onto armies now

Somewhere.

I used to trade a lot (I think I was in the top five for quite some time) and I've yet to have a bad trade. A couple of scares, but no bad trades. That being said, I was also fairly weary and kept (and keep) an eye on any bad trader reports.

Dakka Swap is solid. Sometimes sellers/traders are wishy washy on how serious they are about a deal, but once they decide to commit, it's on.

Of course like anything else, get a feel of the trader as described in this thread.

Check my feedback on Dakka.

That's good to hear... I get the feeling, after all the drama we had about not having one, with only 3K views the Transaction Report List isn't checked all that often

I've bought a few things from the swap shop, didn't have a problem. Just so your research and buy from someone with a high post count and/or has a positive rep trading in the swap shop.

Swapshop is good.

I've done a bunch of trades on there, and rarely had any issue with the trades.

If it wasn't for the swapshop i'd have spent a lot more on my orks than I have, and be sitting on a couple of armies i no longer have any interest in

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts

I have had only trades here and never had a thing go wrong. All the guys shipped exactly when and what was stated and I have been very happy. Thanks to one gent I now have a vial of Texas to put on some bases. Best trade yet! I miss Texas.

The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! We see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude.

Like any endeavour, you only get out of it what you are willing to put in. If you do your research, investigate a potential trader as much as possible using the resources stickied in the Swap Shop and follow some basic principles for insuring/protecting yourself as much as is possible, then nine times out of ten, you will be fine.

However, there can be occasion when things go wrong and while we try and help as much as we can, sometimes a trade will go bad and you have to accept that despite doing everything right, you still got burnt - there is always that element of chance. We do what we can as a site, as Swap Mods and as a community to mitigate or reduce that risk but it will always exist. In any group of people, there will always be a bad egg, more so in an online community where anonymity affords protection.
