hello ladies and gentlemen...

we, form the producers of the empire great tank of the name excalibur and the the infamous still unfinished airship (yet to be named) prodly present you the next step (pun intended) of todays steampowered new scouting warfare mechanism...

behold...the walking tank...in the making...:

comparission with a sentinel leg...i know...tends alwas to get to build itself a bit bigger than intended... i should try to treat such a thing as i treated the gunmaking...but somehow i am more built for bigger things it seems^^

and then...the new and for now better looking cockpitsection...well for now^^

hope you like???

more to come tomorrow...

things have gotten in the way once more, but good work as usual.
Not much to go on ATM, but I trust many rivets and such will go on. Until then, looks good!
what were you planning to have on the cylindrical joint ends? A similar thing to what's on the sentinel's joints? (rivets on/in a circle)

well the joints will be sealed...how... i don´t really know...if all else fails i will seal it with miliput or gs... then add rivets... i try as much as possible to stay true to the sentinel look with the leg... hopefully scale will not ruin my plans...and you bet there will be rivets^^

well... today i worked quite a bit more... we had a guy here that looked after the sealing of our windows...always not really airtight... so with no other options to do than sit around i went and worked on the legs some more... i will show you pics in the night times...currently it isn´t really presentable... also did some major works on the cockpit and began to make a boiler like aperature...stay tuned for more updates...

oh and you really kicked me into gear dave^^ i knew that would happen someday...but now i learn quite a lesson with PC...and there is still so much to be learned...seeing your recent machine...quite a bit^^

Sorry if I missed this already, but: did you scrap the other legs and cockpit section?

What you have so far looks good, starting to take shape. Do you sketch out what you dream it will look like at the beginning? Having a reference drawing would seem useful when talking about proportions and whatnot.

My only bit of CC: you have built two legs that are basically the same. Unless I'm not seeing something, that will produce a very static position with your walking tank.

Keep up the good work!

ach...always the finger on the hurting spot...i realized today too that this will give a most static pose...also the red tube i used...it is from an old felt pen...doesn´t take all too well the glue...plastic is not just plastic...rather unamusing...
i created today eight toes...it was a work of some hours worth... if this instalment doesnt work i have to use the bits i created and restart all over... but i guess whatever it takes to get it done right^^

also...i don´t do sketches...as much as i would love to show it to you guys...but hoenstly... i build as i go along....any sketch would have the same usefulness as a chocolate kettle...

Perhaps it is luck that your non-so-dynamic leg bits are falling apart, then? Look for the silver lining

Hey Vik, it won't be too hard to re-manipulate those legs, just carefully slice around the cylinder pieces. If you have trouble gluing the pen tube, try scuffing the surface with a file or sandpaper- leave the sanding dust, when you cover the dust with glue, it will work like concrete. And feel free to use super glue/CA first to set the position, then cover with plastic glue. I do that all the time.

Awesome Vik! Really cool, I'd keep the legs just like they are, it looks like it is guarding the area. Don't feel dumb, it's my natural instinct to brush it away too, I just found that this works where you need to strengthen joints The toes! OMG great Job!

edit..GF just saw your legs and she told me to tell you good job

Nice work so far, keep it up!
so what's happening with the arms? Are you going sentinel-style weapon mounts (side of cockpit), or making arms and having shoulder/wrist/fist weapons?

Aye, most 40k walkers have very little in the way of arms (it seems only the bigger ones do- titans, dreadknights, etc.)

I don't have any idea either, though at a small scale I'd lean towards no arms, or at least small ones (no elbow joints)

Nice work Vik coming on nicely, the legs looking good and the feet spot on toes are a great job. I like the static pose walkers always look a bit unbalanced when posed walking you could do this one as the command walker looking across his unit.

I am amazed how much you have put into this so far, but I am having a hard time working out the cockpit fitting is there a chance of a picture with a mock up of it so far just to get the idea of how it will fit together

I would go for no arms my self as it would look strange plus you have to add all the piping and gears yet for the steam power set up yet ………thinking about it you could put one arm on as a loader type mechanism possibly

I have heard the saying as much use as a chocolate fire guard before but not kettle ……. My favourite saying is about as much use as a lighthouse in the desert great idea but no use whatsoever ……. or the inflatable dartboard ……

at RW...me too bro... me too^^ as i build along i have slim to none idea as to how this all will develop...

at LDD...from guarding to even command...hell that is too a great idea^^ also i too have that issue with uneasy balanced walkers... some look highly akward that way...but then again it is for that issue that we have actualy in no army any functioning walker tech atm...it is just not a concept for the real world...sadly...

sorry i have to say i couldn´t do the mockup today... i had at first a handyman at home...he completed the windowsealing business of his...then i jumped out of the house to get to my apointment at the school...still not made a contract but it seems highly prolly that it will happen soonish...so crossing fingers is still a good option^^...and to make it complete...i had in the evening a meeting of parents for our kids kindergarten...a meeting of repersentatives of every group...about eating habbits... can anyone spell the word "boooooooooooooring"?

but...in lack of a real update...i can only describe what i could sqeeze into the schedule at some time... did some work on the much needed base of the walky...tried myself in some self made cobblestone carving in PC...boy is that tideous...a 60mm base and now i need cobbles suitable for a 28 mm scale...hell what a work...and the look isn´t even areeing with me atm... making random pattern is just awful...^^ maybe i GS all over and then make a more:

then the current try:

at hmelrose... if i had the funds i porobably would have used some parts of the dreadknight myself...there is some good use in that kit...also even ifi don´t use it i rather like the sentinel kit too...

Individual stones are the only thing you will be happy with..and you know it

So, having settled that, I happen to have a few recommendations Vik!

let me take photos of photos and i'll post it here.

But basically, the key to getting a random pattern for stones, is by laying each stone,(one here, one on the other side of the base, repeat 1 at a time) then squaring each stone up with a flat tool, just like a mason does it with his trowel. he squaring up on your base would be making them all flat on top, level with each other.

This is a chimney on a cottage, but I know you'll like the look the DAS Modeling putty gives.

so in other words you suggest i make individual stones and make the pattern my ranomly adding the stones to the base...

the first question is : are you friend or foe? lol...that will take me ages...and guess what... i made one square base of 35x35mm already by myself this way...lol...that alone was a lifetime^^ now scale that up for the big base^^

now the more realistic question...what mediom of stonemaking should i use...PC, i have also FIMO, GS miliput...or something i am not thinking about right now? i ruled actual stones out atm as i dont want to use super glue atm...don´t feel comfortable right nowwith this stuff...as i think that walker should have a good bonding with the base...and thus i would rather prefer PC to make the cobbles out of...

your futher thoughts?... by the way... thanks for the helpful pics... that chimney...cool stuff! also noce tiles on that roof...terrain making... one of the more awarding things in the hobby if you are just a mediocre painter...

so why haven´t i started with something like that^^

Well, just make the cobbles..bigger! about the siame size as those chimney stones??
Fimo needs baked right?
THen roll it out like thin cookie dough, then carve random brick patterns like the chimney stones into the thin clay. It is easier than it looks, its just like carving brick into foamcore. Carve up a sheet bigger than your base, bake, then trim it down to the base size, the extra bits will always be useful.

It's not hard, it is just a lot of repetative stuff all culminating in something that ends up worth the repetative effort, I promise

will the fimo work with plastic glue? atm i dont want to make do with this glue... not when i have so great succes with plastic glue... for the boiler i ven worked the thicker PC around a round structure and it glued like a charm...

i think i will make slightly bigger cobbles...i think 5x6-7 mm and then create that described pattern...i just need to make rough edges... it will be tedious work but afterwards it will look pretty damn cool^^

and yep... fimo needs to be baked...afterwards it is rather brittle...but my fimow will see action soon... i will make pressmoulds with it and see if this might work out....

use PVA, Elmers, yellow construction glue, superglue. whatever, who cares- its just glue man, glue it and move on. Don't get tied up in procedures, it will drain you and cause burnout, and zero production. Let your imagination go, if you make a mistake, you can alwas fix it
