Hey guys im painting a trygon in the hive fleet behemoth colour scheme but im having trouble shading the red gore of its body, heres what i have done so far:
undercoat - chaos black
1st coat - red gore
wash - gryphonne sepia
the wash just dosnt seem to be giving a depth to the recessed areas of the model, I did think about using a Badab black wash but i dont want it to be too dark in the recessed areas.

Devlan mud ?
I would avoid black wash because it would look dirty.

Id go with either the red wash that GW makes, or a 50/50 mix of that and something darker like a brown with much red in it or black. But black is pretty rough on red. Multiple washes of the red wash is what I'd go for. the red wash actually darkens quite a bit.

If you can I would try and get my hands on a secret weapons soft black wash. It is more a grey wash then really a black wash making it perfect to shade lighter colours. Plus black create a stronger shade than brown.

You could try layering the washes and red gore, it takes a lot more time obviously.
Red Gore,
Wash
Highlight with thinned Red Gore
Wash
Repeat until happy.
Bullfrog is doing this on some Vostroyans and they are looking stunning.

Try Thraka Green if you have it.
I know it sound's weird but it's legit. (color wheels n such)
Just make sure you shake the pot and don't let it heavily pool everywhere

I'm agreeing with the Devlin mud, but that is the only colour I've seen it washed with in person that I like. Not really a fan of their red wash, unless I wanted a more redish pink. Just seems a little weak, but might just be me.

Actually, Asurman Blue should work quite nicely. I use it on all the red on my Orks for shading - picked that up from a White Dwarf painting article (Warboss on Boar)

I usually use Burnt ember (VA) to shade Red, then some blue wash.
Cheers

Hmm thanks guys gonna have to do some test models and see what works best. I can honestly say i would have never thought of using green or blue to shade my reds, guess its time to revise my colour theory.
Will post pics of test models and get some opinions on which works best.
