Hello!
This weekend I attended the annual Maul in the Mall event found here:

This year had a great turnout and the weather was great, which was nice due to the skylights if not a little toasty at times.
Here is my army:

Don't fret; I'm working on a proper display board and have bought very nice bases for my henchmen, but this is what I had for this weekend.
Here is a thread where I detail how I made my henchmen:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/435413.page
My usual inquisition army that I take has a land raider and an inquisitor and a jokaero squad and it has done very well for me, but it's a more common inquisition list with not very many surprises nor does it have a wide variety of tools. Still, it's a strong army but I wanted to take something different. I really enjoyed using a stormraven at some local team tournaments and I set about to make a list with something similar to my team list, but I wasn't sure if it would ever work; ergo, when I saw the
GK list that did well at the Indy Open
GT, I decided to give it a shot with some personal modifications. My goal was to bring the tools to handle any army and have enough mobility to hit anywhere on the board if I needed to; board control would be something I wanted to emphasize. Also, I needed to make a list that could carry me at any time due to the fact that I've been playing for less than a year.
Stormraven 1 had the Death cultists squad with the librarian and the other Stormraven had the techmarine and Coteaz.
The only problem was that I had only played this list once before this tournament, and that was on a Thursday night. The tournament was going to be interesting to say the least.
So without further delay I bring to you my battle reports for all three games! Captions will be referring to the picture
above them.
GAME 1
Mission:
Table Quarters, Pitched Battle with 6 turns, night fighting turns one and two.
Primary: Table Quarters and only troops can score/contest
Secondary: Kill Points
Tertiary: Have more units in your opponent's deployment zone.
Game 1 was against a fellow Grey Knights player from Atlanta. I lost my sheet where I wrote down the names of all my opponents, so I apologize in advance for forgetting your name!
His list was as follows:
Draigo
Inquisitor (malleus, daemonblade x 2, hammerhand)
10 terminators with Justicar Thawn and a various weapons-5 halberds
10 terminators with 5 halberds and two psycannons, warding stave, and hammer. Same as above.
5 man Paladin Squad with an apothecary, banner, daemonhammer, warding stave, psycannon
I won the roll off and gave him turn one. He was deepstriking his army save for the inquisitor so I deployed everything but my stormravens with their cargo. I elect to fortify a ruin on my right; my plan was to use the cover to put my dreads and hopefully come in and blast his terminators with my stormravens from reserve.
Awaiting the onslaught.
Here he gets all but one squad of terminators in from reserve turn 2. He elects to shoot at my troops instead of running, which is great for me. He stuns a dreadnought and my razorback makes its cover saves on the left except once and he pops the turret on it.
I'm in luck! I get a stormraven from reserve.
My assassins and crusaders prepare to wipe them out.
After dropping all four of my mindstrike missiles, plasma cannon, and melta, I whittled him down significantly and charged in, wiping out the rest. My dreadnoughts shoot at his paladin squad ineffectively except for one S8 shot going through and doubling out a paladin. I also shoot a dreadnought at his inquisitor and double him out. :/
Thrawn gets back up.
Turn three results in his other squad coming in, deep striking in front of my troops, thankfully. Again he elects to shoot instead of spreading out.
His paladin squad and draigo move forward towards my dreadnoughts on the right, removing weapons and whatnot. He charges and we have a rules debate about whether dreadnoughts are Psykers and whether the Psychic Pilot special rule counts as a Psyker. The judge rules that they are and he strikes down a regular dreadnought with S10. The good news for me is that he perils and fails the save on Draigo.
I'm in luck once more and my techmarine squad comes in!
A better shot of the impending action. My techarine's squad will charge Draigo and the stormravens will blast the other squad and the librarians squad will multicharge thrawn and the remaining terminators.
A shot of the charge before any dice are rolled. Will be interesting for sure. I don't fail any dangerous terrain checks.
His other squad falls quickly to two stormravens and all my dreadnoughts plus heavy bolters. I charge thrawn and the last terminator and wipe them. Draigo fails three of three invuln saves from a single assassin and dies. The rest of the squad (i.e. the warding stave and apothecary) breaks and runs.
Bye bye!
At this point he conceded as I will escort him off the table. Max points for me. I found out I had played the mindstrike missiles incorrectly from the
INAT FAQ and we had each model take a perils, but we both agree (after I apologize) that it wouldn't have made much of a difference honestly. He was a great sport and I was glad to fight a list like that as I've never done so before.
GAME 2
The mission: Dawn of war, no night fighting.
Primary: Control more objectives (of which there were 5) than your opponent.
Secondary: Any unit can score and control each point on the map at some point of the game.
Tertiary: Choose two units; A and B. Have your A alive and their B dead or running by the end of the game to get points.
This would be hard to max out. My goal was to win the whole tournament, not just win every game, so this would be hard. The good news was that I could take my stormravens and come on for the cover save. No nightfighting was great for me!
NOPE. Necrons with Solar Pulse.
My opponent, Allen, brought his great-looking necrons. I had heard about how good he was before this and how good his list was, so I was nervous. He did not fail to live up to his reputation.
His list:
Overlord with command barge and mindshackle scarabs
royal court with two eldrich lances, one res or, and one solar puls
8 immortals with esla
6 warriors with a ghost arc
6 warriors with a ghost arc
5 warriors
5 wraiths, all wound allocated (oh no)
6 Scarabs
3 Spyders
Monolith
Monolith
Oh man. Scarabs, spiders, wraiths. Monoliths. All I have to deal with them are my two multimeltas and my vortex of doom. I have been undefeated against necrons before this and frankly I don't mind playing them. They're fun to play against and look great! Every game is different with them. However, my dreads double out wraiths, my assassins double out scarabs with rad grenades, and can double out wraiths with two hammerhands from the techmarine, rad grenade, and coteaz's hammerhand. All in all I don't really sweat it against them, but I've learned to never get complacent.
I'm not saying Necrons or weak and I realize that there are some scary lists out there that could destroy me, but the lists I've fought haven't destroyed me like they've mopped up other armies/friends.
I win the roll and let him go first. He moves on and rolls on up towards the middle with his barge flat out and puts his monoliths in reserve. He blows solar pulse on my turn.
I move on up and breathe a sigh of relief; I put searchlights on my stormravens just for this occasion and so I flat out towards his barge and searchlight it. Time to take that down before he zips around.
My dreads bring it down and the lord pops out. He's not happy. I'm in a good position right now as if he takes the bait and charges my stormraven I can get the charge off on him next turn and if he holds off I can just blast away at will.
He gets ready to charge me while adding on scarabs.
More movement.
OH SNAP! He charges my stormraven.
He blows it up and fails to kill anyone. I just put them in a pile as I will charge him my turn and it's not worth the ache in my back to put them up (I'm 6'3" and leaning over all day takes its toll). Now it's my turn.
I realize that if I combine my two assassin units I can take roughly half his army in one turn, so I make it happen by moving 12 inches with my other stormraven and bail out. Here's a shot.
A wider angle.
I have learned to never rely on close combat for results and so I shoot his wraiths with dreads. I double them all out from my four dreads except for one and put a wound on a lord. My multimelta rolls two twos to penetrate his monolith. Wheee!
Now it's my turn to swarm.
Let's just say he dies swiftly.
A shot of his spiders hiding. By now his monolith has moved mid field.
He shoots and scatters and kills an assassin with some rifles. He charges the stormraven with the spider and fails to do anything. For my turn I move my stormraven around and go flat out to the left towards his far corner with his 5 man warrior squad and 8 immortals.
The multimelta blows up the monolith. I do an
IC swap and get my techmarine to joins the squad on the right to grab the middle while the librarian moves over to the techmarines old squad to hammer (with Might of Titan and coteaz) that monolith should the melta fail, but it doesn't. My dreads pop his two ghost arks. I know AV13 is hard to blow up with S8 shooting, but frankly I always wind up popping AV13 during whatever turn I shoot at them when I need to, so I am not surprised; especially against open top skimmers. I guess that's one area where I'm lucky.
His turn three results in his monolith coming on. He fails to do anything except immobilize a dreadnought and take a weapon off the other.
I shoot more at his two warrior squads. I need to get those objectives for max points.
I move my stormraven with the librarian over and blow away the warriors with my plasma cannon. They actually fail their morale and run off. Lucky "Break" pun intended.
A shot of my troops moving in on that corner to secure that objective.
I try to get him off that objective! Nothing happens though. His turn four results in a little more moving and shooting with his warriors and monolith.
My turn four has me get out with the librarian and move on over towards those immortals. I fly my stormraven flat out back towards the other side to help secure that objective in the opposite corner. My techmarine and friends move towards that corner to help secure it too.
His turn five results in him moving around some more and shooting at my vehicles. He fails to do anything. One of those squads had run and regrouped by the way.
For my turn five I assault that squad with my librarian, drawing them off the objective. I kill one which gets back up. He doesn't kill the librarian. We roll and the game goes on. Phew!!!!
He conests this one.
He moves around and shoots at my 3 man unit and kills two but one sticks around.
Here's a picture of where my assassin squad used to be. His monolith and other squad blast away at my techmarine and friends and kill all of them. Ouch!
His assault phase kills my librarian. My turn six!
My lone henchmen shoots his laspistol at the Lord and puts it down! This makes a lord and two wraiths that my 4 point henchmen have killed. My storaven and other dreads down the other squad. He winds up failing his ever-living rolls and fails to get back up! For my assault I charge him with my other assassin squad on the far left in that bunker and with the dreadnought as well. He gets wiped and we call it. Max points for me.
Allen was a great guy to play against (I remember his name due to the fact that I wrote his name on his army list) and was a great general with a great army. My Grey Knights just were too powerful for his list that game I think. There wasn't much he could do I suppose. However, he made me earn those points and I'm sure we'll play each other again.
GAME 3
Okay. Max points so far. I can do this.
The Mission: Carnage. Everything except
HQs are recycled when they die. What this means is that if something is drestroyed, the next turn, that unit comes back on the table from their general's board edge as if from reserve, but may outflank when they come on if they want to. So you can kill a model and it will drive on from their board edge the following turn brand new.
Spearhead.
Primary: Win Victory Points.
Secondary: Kill their General (highest point
HQ) and keep yours alive. Generals are worth double points.
Tertiary: Win by more than 2500 (haha no way)
I look up and a Dark Eldar puts his stuff down in front of me. Great. Recycling 75 point tanks. I'm going to have to play this smart.
I have misplaced his list and therefore his name, but his list was from memory (bear with me as I've only played against Dark Eldar once before)
Archon
9 wytches and one with that hydra gauntlet or whatever in a raider
10 wytches in a raider
thee squads of trueborns with four blasters (or was it three?) in a venom
three squads of regular guys with one blaster in a venom
Three ravagers.
I think that was it.
I win the roll and elect to go first this time. The game turns run together for this game due to the sheer number of recycling venoms and ravagers so I will just report on the pictures I took and hopefully I can sew together some semblance of a coherent chronological play by play.
A shot of our deployment.
I realize that I can't afford to castle in the middle as that's too close to him but I can't afford for him to come on my right flank. So I decide to throw my minions out there to die gloriously for their emperor. I block the right side as far as I can. However, as I'm setting them down I'm getting getting strange looks from my opponent and the table next to me plus those who are watching. Suddenly the guy at table two looks at this and says "Oh man he's gonna try and get you to shoot at his inexpensive units blocking his flank!" It gets kind of quiet for a few moments as I try to ignore it, but it was still a strange thing to do. Anyway, we begin the turn. I reserve the Ravens.
The result of my shooting nets me a decent lead. His
HQ is in the very back.
He moves up and recycles his units and moves towards me. The raider in the far corner is his
HQ. I sigh inwardly as I know I can't just let it alone as my goal is to win the whole tournament so I can't just leave it alone.
A better angle of his movement.
His shooting knocks an arm off a dread and a weapon off a razorback. Not too scary for now.
My turn nets me a few venom kills and whatnot. I don't get any stormravens in. For his next turn he moves into mid and moves up, popping a razorback and immobilizing a dread.
A shot of the results. I'm killing units but he keeps recycling and it's going to be tough to keep up. I decided to just focus on his ravagers as they're easy to kill and around 120 a pop.
My techmarine raven comes in, but no librarian raven, and I make a mistake here. I intend to go for the tournament win and flat out towards his
HQ with my "expendable" techmarine assasin squad, but I forget my own plan momentarily and flat out my stormraven to behind my lines from reserve for the cover save. I fire a plasma cannon and kill a warrior or something.
A better shot of what's happening. He's killing the warrior acolyte squads with his venoms, but I don't mind as they are only 4 points a model and they stop his outflanking. However, they can't shoot at anything else so I eventually start loading them into razorbacks. I don't think he will change up his plan and outflank at this point.
I manage to whittle down some of his venoms as I figure I can pop those and kill the infantry so they have to walk back on, then I can focus on his ravagers for points.
He continues recycling and begins to start destroying some things. He wrecks a dreadnought and a razorback, making that two razorbacks and two dreadnoughts I think. I'm still up by quite a large margin but he's starting to close in and every loss closes the
VP gap substantially.
Here's a shot of the pile of dice and whatnot from the two tables.
I finally get my Stormraven in the librarian in and decide that "Operation: kill his
HQ no matter what
lol" is in effect. My meltagun misses both
TL shots.
My other raven moves over to help out with target saturation and maybe unload an assassin squad and wipe out those various infantry squads in the middle.
As you can see he has several ripe for the assault and they're in range to blast away from cover if I don't dislodge them.
He manages to explode my stormraven despite my best efforts and I fail my pinning check. Great.
I recycle my stormraven and a dreadnought that perished in an attempt to provide fire support for operation KHHNMQL.
I move 11 inches up and unload. I'm counting on my meltagun to pop his raider. It does.
Getting ready to assault. I've never seen wytches in
CC before but I have faith my troops can handle it.
They do indeed, escorting his
HQ off the board.
I try not to kill anything else as I know he'll just recycle it to kill my
HQ, but my shooting was on fire and killed whatever I shot at. First world problems? I suppose I shouldn't have shot at all, but I did just shoot at ravagers though so it wasn't too bad. We both forget for him to roll dangerous when his ravagers come on as he put one on the table after recycling it and I'd always pop it; ergo he just left if there and said he's driving it back on to where it just was anyway. It was close enough that had he failed his test he would have been partially off the table, but oh well.
The dark eldar close in on the hapless librarian and his
HQ and intend to exact vengance upon them. Maybe I can hop in the stormraven and fly away?
This was where the techmarine squad was earlier. He venoms down the squad. I begin to roll a lot of ones for armor saves here. Not good.
He plays smart and closes the noose around my neck and destroys everything over in that corner.
The game is over soon so I recycle what I can and try and blow up his ravagers and any venoms that I can see if I can't see the ravagers. I need points.
He advances with his army. He is either rolling all ones or all sixes, and it's a roller coaster where he'll miss every shot or pen every shot and roll either 6s or 2s on the chart.
He wipes out the recycled assassin squad I tried to hide behind cover; not a smart move on my part at all. Not sure what I was thinking. He tries his best to blow up another raven but my cover saves hold and he rolls a lot of 2s on the damage chart. The game ends.
It's going to be close. I stuck to my plan and instead of just hanging back with my
HQ I wanted to try to max points. We'll see if my gamble paid off or not.
After all is said and done, I win by around 200 if I remember correctly, give or take a few points. Had he killed that last stormraven I would have lost I believe. Phew!
He was a great opponent and was relaxing to play against. We chatted for a while as we finished pretty quickly and awaited the results.
I got 16 points that last game, and that was enough to give me....
Not bad for my first tournament with this list and second game ever with it!
Grey Knights definitely carried me a long way, no doubt about it. However, I had a great time and met some great people, and was proud to represent our local group, Fixed Dice; especially in a home game, if you will. Last year tenehuenie or however it's spelled won it with his dark eldar, so I was all to happy to take best general at least for our area. Best overall took home $500 and beat me by three points, I believe. He had a beautifully converted pre-heresy
SW army, though, so....
Well, thanks for sticking with me for this long read! I'm sorry it was a Grey Knight army, but I enjoyed converting all my models and love the play style. So whatever.
I had three people come up to me before the tournament and bring up the fact that my army was cheesy and whatnot, but I just fed off their hatred and anger. Just kidding; only one of them was serious and the rest were joking, of course. I think.
Our carpool was successful as we had best painted and best general trophies in the car riding back, so that's good, I guess!
Peace out.
