Poll
How hard does GW sell to you if GW did sell hard?
1) Nigh on every time
2) Quite a lot,
3) A middling amount
4) Hardly ever
5) Never had it happen
A) So hard it would make Clint Eastwood himself flinch
B) Pretty hard, they will pester and need to be asked once or twice to chill and that you don't need anything else
C) Moderate, i.e. if they don't know you, they may suggest a few things, but when you ask them to stop they do
D) Reasonably easy, they will enquire about paints, maybe other tools and stuff, then drop it
E) Very soft, they will only ask about paints/other models/etc if you raise the subject of what to add first, and its not out of proportion (e.g. I just bought some boyz HERE HAVE A STOMPA!)

Hey guys so I've been reading a lot of threads (as you all have probably) about the numerous reasons GW sucks, and one that keeps coming up is the 'hard sell' approach. But I have never had that at any of the GWs in brisbane, or the one or two I've been to in other parts of Aus, so I was wondering if its a mostly international thing? I mean, if you buy a big pile of boxes, they'll ask if you have enough paints for that (and even then its only the ones who remember my name that tend to ask it), and its a yes/no answer, not 'but you need this and that and this to get good colour'. Hell, when I was starting they acknowledged that when helping me pick paints, giving me simpler ways to paint initially which didn't rely on 8 highlights, washes, and layers of different mixes, in fact they relied on minimum paints, which was very helpful and a great way to start.

So I was wondering if theres many other aussies out there who have been subject to the hard selling I see people mention on here a lot? And to what degree? Numbers are frequency, Letters are magnitude.

On a side note, this is my first poll ever, so fingers crossed it works.

Edit: huzzah the poll worked

I know the local GW guys, and they know that we barely buy stuff in store as it is just WAY too expensive.

I buy paints and that's about it, but they are cool with that. Even paints are overpriced (by about double) but doesn't feel that bad when it's only 1 or 2.

As for selling stuff, they get it, we just feel like crap for them as they are really good guys and they cannot help the prices.

I'm going with E since I don't generally stick around the bad stores. Been a while since I've been to one though.

I've had it happen once locally (we happen to have one of the only two stores in the state NOT located in Sydney) - and that redshirt is now the manager.

He pushed the hard sell at me. I told him to back off lest he lose ANY sale he might hope to make. He didn't. I haven't been back - and have been known to go to stores in Sydney rather than deal with him (it's a two and a half hour drive away).

Now we have a new FLGS and between them and the local hobby/model store, I don't need to soil the soles of my boots by walking into a GW store for hobby materials.

There should be a "BUY A STOMPA!" option on the poll.

But no, the GW guys near me don't go for the hard sell. At worst they give the "What do you play?/Have you seen this yet?" line.

The BUY A STOMPA is the equivalent of making clint eastwood flinch. Ive been watching fox classics recently, indulge me.

Which is actually not a bad one as it can start somewhat of a conversation as long as it doesn't go "Daemons you say? Have you seen this new Landspeeder/Trukk/Leman Russ kit?" or "Sounds like you need a Baneblade".

I've heard that about some of the bris stores.
We just seem to get the ass-hats. We have had some cool staff in the past - but they realised that although the staff discount was good, you couldn't live on the pay and left for greener pastures.

Every time i've gone into one of the GWs in Adelaide (TTP, Adelaide and Marion), I mostly find myself completely ignored to the point I'm standing at the counter for ages, ignored by the assistant who is too engrossed in his painting etc. and have to, in essence, yell at an employee to come over.
The other occasions have been alright, but i am CONSTANTLY being hard-sold the white dwarf which i refuse to buy...

I don't go into my local store (Newcastle) very much, since it's about an hour away by car. Most of the time the sell is limited to "have you got WD/ paints" line, so not too bad overall. One time though (a couple of years ago), one of the guys was really pressing me to buy WD, he almost scanned it despite me not wanting it (and saying so several times).

Love my local GW (liverpool), the staffers are probably the coolest guys around, the worst I get is at the start of this month "have you got this month's WD yet?" or the occasional do you need any clippers/glue/paints etc.
For those that are close enough, I recommend a visit.
Infact the only real problem with the store is there are no decent parking spots around :(

Last time I shopped in a GW, it was quite literally 'BUY A STOMPA'.
I decided it was fairly harmless to go buy a pot of paint. 2 meters from the door to the counter, ask for a pot of scorched brown, pay in cash, out in less than a minute. Boy was I wrong.

"You know what would look great in scorched brown? this STOMPA"

Numbers are frequency, Letters are magnitude.

The numbered items are how you respond to the frequency of the hard selling, the lettered items are how you respond to the magnitude of them.

Did that clear your question up?

At my local shop (GW Hornsby) don't bother even asking the regular customers. I have seen them do it a few times with the newer or younger players, but they have always been polite about doing it. Though they do joke with me about how much Greenstuff I've used this week.
The one at Chatswood has been good too.

Hornsby's just up the road from me. I can't even tell who the staff are when I walk in. They've certainly never tried to sell me a Stompa.

Next time we are at Hornsby I'll make sure you leave with a Stompa... everyone needs 3.

"Got undercoat/glues? A WD subscription?" Those are the main ones I guess. They aren't so bad and I know that it's all dictated from above anyhow. Same thing happens if I buy a pair of shoes from Footlocker.
