So, I have a ton of armies, and I have them all stored in KR card cases. KR cases are 100mm tall. I need to fit a monolith inside, which is about 140mm (at least) in any direction.

What's the best way to chop one up/magnetise one so that I can make it fit in the case? It's from an eBay trade, so built already, but unpainted.

I was thinking of just sawing it in half and then magnetising the two bits, but any straight line seems to go through something vital... Obviously the big crystal can be magnetised, and I could potentially do the same to the guns.

Saw it lengthwise or across the middle?

Deffo down a line between one of the three things on the side. The two sides will be slightly uneven but you'd not cut anything vital that I can see

Cutting it in half doesn't seem like a practical solution. Now, of course, neither does buying an entirely new case. But, in case you didn't know, the Monolith will fit in the KR double-sized cases (and larger) without a problem...they've even got custom foam for it.

Dont, Just get a giant case pack it full of packing foam, then use that. Dont ruin your model.

Yeah, I saw their foam, but I use the Kaiser 2 and the Backpack 2, both of which hold two regular sized cases. I think I'd have to get a whole double aluminium case to fit their monolith foam, and the rest of the army isn't that big!!

There must be a handy way of chopping it up...

Well, if you experiment and make a grievous mistake, you can always just make 1 or two wrecked Monolith terrain pieces, right? So it won't be a total loss ...

If you have a model and a case that doesn't fit, cutting the model into pieces is only one option

Thank you for this illuminating discussion. I really hope I can hear more on this later.

Anyhow, just use a cardboard box and fill it with foam.

What about cutting it diagonally? Would take up more space widthways, but would be a lot shallower.

I have two ideas.

One is to saw down the opposite vertical corners so that it joins at what are effectively seams already. If you're going to magnetize it, you could cover up the cracks with lengths of Plastruct angle iron that attach by magnets. It would look like extra armour.

The second idea is more fun though harder to make work. Saw three or four horizontal sections, then nest each ascending part within the one below. To expand the Monolith, you pull on the top part and slide all the sections up into place so that it looks like a Mayan step pyramid.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

The 7 pylon pieces up at the crystal, if removed, might give you room. A lot easier to remove them than to cut the whole thing in half.

Like this!!

On a serious note, I would cut it down the bit on the side where there are 3 sticky out bits, and then remove the crystal.

Sisters of Battle can be used in any game, with the exception of chess, Monopoly and of course, Warhammer 40,000.

I own this model and think it would be a very iffy proposition to cut it at all and not have it look terrible. I'd just put it in a shopping bag by itself.

Mine just sits in the cabinet as a kind of geeky "lava lamp" without being anywhere near as ugly and 70s (I loathe lava lamps) - as I built it primarily to light it up.

Necron players I know with them just carry them in shopping bags. The "reusable" 'fabric' ones (that are made from a woven plastic fibre).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

How about getting a nice cardboard box and putting it in that? Cutting it half doesn't sound like a good idea for transporting a model. I would hate to see what you would do to a Manta or a Thunderhawk.

I make custom carrying cases all the time, with a cardboard box and foam + double sided adhesive (the kind with a wax paper backing that peels away to reveal ONLY an adhesive layer). If one was willing, especially if you were planning on 1 or 2 more Monoliths, making a case would be quite easy and beneficial as a player.

Who still uses matchbooks? Those would be the hardest thing to find for the whole army! I plan on cutting up my BA force (Stormravens included) so I can fit all 2500 points in my pocket.

Back on topice for real, I agree with most of the other posters, cutting it and trying to assemble it again would be a pain. As I see it you have 2 options:

1. If you converting-fu is good, you could do some major work to make it look different and make it work

2. Get a bag and/or box with some foam and use that.

Here's a better idea: you can hollow out the monolith and fit the rest of the army into it. Certainly will hold more than a matchbox.

This! A telescopic Monolith.

Or more sensibly this...

Why cut through the sides?

Why are people making this harder than it is?
