Thanks vent, I'll post up my progress hopefully thursday or friday this week, I managed to get a couple of my dev squads bodies 80% done and i'm liking how they look so far :-) i'll try and bust through another one tonight and then when the cannons come from that wonderful place Ebay i'll be able to just paint them and pop 'em on!

Did Pyriel ever share his magic formula for scales with you,or is he keeping it a closely guarded secret?

Next time you do scales can you try to do little scales moving into big ones, like on a lizard, they have lots of little scales around areas that move a lot, like the neck, but then on the main body they have bigger ones. Might need to be on something bigger like a vehicle, but I think it would look awesome and better than a random sizes all over or similar sized scales all over.

Nope Pyriel is keeping it secret at the moment but i'll harass him and see if he can help me out I was sorta going for a rocky look to the dready and i'll paint the areas in between as a lava flow, but I was thinking much as you described by adding some scales onto my vehicles thanks for letting me know how the scales should look/work I didn't even think about how they actually move on a lizard!

worst thing that ahppen to me was after having painted a whole salamanders terminator arm being finished and all I promptly dropped it...right into a opened pot of paint lol.

Nerd, If they are not your cup of tee then use whatever method you feel look nice on your minis but I tried the very same thing described in that tutorial further back in the thread when I initially toyed with scale sculpting, just my opinion but it sucks and takes ages to do.

Yep, that's the kind of tea I can drink! :-) i'll pm you and bother you later on so you can impart your wisdom upon me and I can begin to make scales! oooh yeah!

and nope...not blunt, they do take a while and I found trying to get the bottom of the rock/scales flat was tricky so hopefully i can emmulate yours to good degree!

Ha! up for the challenge! you bet lol, lucky I don't bet much! :-) my style is a tad different from young Pyriel's here so hopefully it can stand alone and still look pretty sweet, i'll pop some w.i.p shots up again tomorrow or friday arvo if you're on and about? the green is getting brighter as I go! looking a bit more like sons of medusa than sallies at the moment but i've got a bit of work stll to do on them!

Ta Daaaaaa! yep, got an update on the Salamanders! had a but of quiet time at work last night at 3am so I though eh! why not, lets test the 'ol eyes out and see if I can blend some green armor! hopefully tonight I can do the eyes and gold highlights
these guys are going to be a plasma cannon weilding squad of Doooooom! hence no arms in actual light they are quite bright, more so than they appear in the pics, if i highlighted them more I could have passed them of as sons of medusa or Aurora chapter, but i think the colour is still predominantly Salamander! i'm hoping to find half hour on my rdo's this week to do 'headless Barry's' head! I think he's end up being the sarge of the squad, don't know what to give him though? he's not exactly getting into the thick of battle! any ideas?

well, enough rambling, like mario says in mario kart..... Ere we goooooo!







Hope you approve? let me know what you think, I think this army will look pretty sweet when I get into stride with the painting! i'm still itching to do some landspeeders for them! maybe soon? we'll see.

what are the green colour mixes? The green looks to yellow in the highlite.

Hey Pyriel, thanks for the compliment dude! I hope I can paint them well enough to make you proud! or at least work out a technique that piques your interest!

and I only use 3 colours for the armor, Orkhide shade for the base, then snot green, then mixes adding more and more golden yellow to it, I liked the image on the front of firedrake with the yellow tinge so that was my inspiration there, the golden yellow keeps it nice and warm, but the pics do make it appear a touch too bright than what it actually is, it's more like the one i sent you :-)

There are three of us supergreenies in here now.

Try to use scorpion green instead of golden yellow and see what the result will be, that´s what I do and it works for me.
We have different base greens but I dont think you´ll loose anything by trying.

Couldn't see the pics at work so I just kicked the wife off the computer so I could have a look.

Nice highlighting as usual Damo.

Are you ink washing after the basecoat? If so what colour?

I can't help but think that you could handle a slightly darker shade. So there's a bit more contrast in tone, saying that if you're happy with it then stick with it.

I actually like the golden yellow mix so i'll run with it for now, it's just a bit different to what i usualy see for green armor, and we all know I like to be just a little left of centre :-)

No washes hangy, just brush work so far, I'll see if i can link some models i was inspired by the style of and you'll see what i'm trying to emmulate with these guys, i think when the details are finished and the weapons together it'll all blend well, and i f i don't like it then for the rest of the squads i'll try Pyriels method and add scorpion green and see what happens! :-)

Fantastic stuff dude, I love your Exemplar dudes and the new Salamanders look amazing. The blending from the highlighted green/yellow to the green is superb.
