As long as we don't get a fairy tale ending or that "ideal" ending some of the show watchers want, I''m happy.

Since the show is pretty much guaranteed to end first, will the show's end be the same as the book?

GRRM has said he's got the ending already written, and that it's going to be one of two options;
Spoiler:
A giant cemetery filled with headstones, including ALL the main characters, and either a sandstorm or a blizzard blowing through everything.

Not especially impressive - a graveyard suggests that there is someone to dig the graves and as far as we know none of the main cast are immortals so they will die anyway....so pretty meaningless image

Sandstorm - really? - surely he means a firestorm

Blizard - ho hum.......

As most peoples' fav char seems to be Jon Snow - more than happy for him to die.

Speaking of favoured characters, is anyone else beginning to hope that Arya Stark fails to become a faceless 'man'? Because if she does become a faceless 'man' she'll have to give up her quest for vengeance.

Is it also a given that there's more to a girl called 'the waif' and her relationship to a man who is not 'Jaqen H'ghar'?

I think Arya will become quite good at The Game and get all she needs from her training to then go off and do...whatever it is she wants to do/what the Many Faced God Wants Her To Do!

I think Arya might go rogue. Learn what she can from the Faceless Men including how to change her face at will, then split and return to Westeros. Which might make her a target for the Faceless Men.

Well she did hide needle. No point in hiding it if you're not going to go back for it.

My money is on shireen or stannis, they said a major character would be dying.

I think Stannis also.. whether Ramsay kills him, or they end up getting wiped out marching on Winterfell.

But they could do a complete U-turn and kill of John Snow, Khaleesi and Tyrion in one episode

I don't know. Hiding Needle may have just been a device to show she wasn't totally into it. Just because needle is hidden doesn't mean she's going to use it. It is also entirely possible that Not-Jaqen will bring it up at some point and be like 'One found this trinket on the shore today. Does one know anything about it?'

Theres a plotpoint in the books about her still warging into Nymeria in her dreams, which might mean that the ritual that would turn her into a faceless (wo)man might not work on her, or not work in its entirety. Not sure if itll happen in the show though, since her dreams havent really been shown or mentioned.

It makes sense from a productions point of view. The need to be animated in every scene, which takes a lot of time (comparably) and money. They would not add a lot to the plot but be expensive and thus not having them bar deus ex lupus moments is a good decision.

Game of Thrones, while immensively successful, still has to work on a budget. That's also the reason for all the filler scenes that have no purpose but add duration, e.g. the recent Dorne prison scene and Sam's entire plotline. If having those fillers means also having huge battle scenes...I'm aaaaaall in!

Plus, which secondary characters do you keep? Do you completely strip the plot down to its essentials, and get critisized for streamlining everything? Do you keep everything and get bogged down so much the show becomes extremely boring and disjointed? Do you ditch Sam in favor of keeping the Greyjoys, and piss of fans of Sam, or do you ditch the Greyjoys in favor of keeping Sam and piss of Greyjoy fans. Which of the hundreds of secondary and tertiary characters do you keep and not keep? There's just no winning with some people, so you just need to make the best show you can. Can't please everyone.

It's not the lack of seeing the wolves. It's the actual lack of a young man who never, ever, mentions his pet/best friend/partner/warg in general conversation. I can't remember the last time we saw or heard about Ghost before he randomly shows up to save Sam.

Cut them or don't. Don't show them much, that's fine. But for the love of god don't forget they exist completely until "boom, save sam/jon"!

I think Ghost considers Sam as part of the Pack.

Jon Sam and Ghost are a Pack. Also I'm sure Ghost looked Jon dead in the eye and hinted he rip Jon leg off if he tried to get him on a wooden boat during winter time

In the books, Ghost is the most independent of the wolves. He tends to go off and do his own thing, hunting whenever he pleases.

Expect to see him in episode 10 though.

I am pretty sure you guys didn't read what he actually said....

"I’ve wrestled with this issue, because I do want to surprise my readers. I hate predictable fiction as a reader, I don’t want to write predictable I wrestled with that issue and I came to the conclusion that changing it would be a disaster, because the clues were there. You can’t do that, so I’m just going to go ahead. Some of my readers who don’t read the boards, which thankfully there are hundreds of thousands of them, will still be surprised and other readers will say: ‘see, I said that four years ago, I’m smarter than you guys.’"

From what I have seen

It is going to be.....

Ramsey walks into camp fails to kill stannis. Escapes! And then Stannis seeing no other choice might need to kill his daughter.

But I will bet you for certain someone IE (JON Dies)

Because lets face it R + L = J and GRRM will not kill Jon because he has more plot armor than any other character alive. But Maybe sam dies.

I'm glad they included hiding Needle. Even so though, TV just is not a venue to show why she hid it. You can't exactly see in her head, and what she was thinking.

They had to hide Needle because it's a TV series. Acting doubt or a lack of commitment out is nigh impossible as it's easily confused with other similar emotions if you lack the proper context. By hiding Needle, an actual object, viewers are told that Arya is still in doubt.

I think that scene exists to remind us that Ghost is there for what people are speculating will happen in episode 10.

Or they could do it with dialogue, like they did with Ayra's feelings about the Hound. Another piece of baggage she hasn't lost (yet?).

We get that many in this thread have read the books.

It is probably best to leave off with all the 'ominous' and not so subtle hints about EPISODE 10!!!!~!11!!!!

Now I am just guessing because we have gotten to the point were the books don't actually cover any of the material that is going on up north O.O

Not true, actually.

I mean, we're almost there - but not quite!

I really am glad that the TV series has 'caught up' with GRRM - because now I'll either get to read book 6 before season 6, or season 6 will hit first, and that will be OK too.

It will be odd to have the TV series 'spoiling' the books, but I'll be OK with that!

At this point, neither of us is interested in the book anymore. Martin has a LOT to make up for after the last two books and even if the series has a few dark spots (namely the two recent episodes), at the very least, you wasted less time and can focus on the better rest.

A 30 minute limit might have actually worked better for the series as it would always be a very tightl written episode. This would have, however, required a lot more editing, e.g. by removing unnecessary sub-plots (looking at you, Dorne and Sam).
