Here are a few images of a Space Marine Chapter I have been working on for a while. I wanted a less gothic, more gritty-themed mecha-heavy army. I have been kitbashing GW models with models from AT-43, Dust Tactics, Robogear, and just about any other bitz I can get my hands on. I wanted the entire army to look like it has been operating in the field for months, so I have added substantial weathering, rust, and chipped paint effects to the models.

This are just a few quick photos I took, if you want to see detailed pics of any of the models let me know and I'll be happy to post 'em!

[/img]

This is a detail shot of my long-range support walkers, with my Assualt Marines and a converted Warthog in the foreground.

Detail shot of my Honor Guard, Chapter master and Terminators with Tanks and Space marines in the foreground.

This is my Heavy Battle Mecha-Tank, The concept was originally borrowed from the Ghost in the Shell, Arachnid tanks, but with the plethera of great Mech and walker models currently availible, this was a pretty straight-forward converstion.

What rules are you using for the mechs. They are pretty cool.

I've been using the Mantic Warpath Forgefather rules, I like the simpler fast-paced combat style. I Just use the Long-Range Walkers as ordinance, and the Heavy Walker as a Heavy Tank. I have played a "friendly" game or 40K, I used the Heavy Walker as a Predator tank, and the Long-Range support walkers as Thunder-Fire Cannons.

The Stormtalon proxy was converted form the Robogear Condor model, I thought it looked a little to cartoonish out of the box to be used for 40K, so I made a few modifications, but the truth is, the Condor looks better than the GW Stormtalon without any modification (only my opnion mind you).

My Gunship conversion before primer

The Gunship and Warthog with primer, before painting. The Warhog is from the Heroclix Halo Warthog model, the rollbars are made from old sprues, with details added from an old Tamiya, WWII tank detail set.

Absolutely gorgeous work, from the conversions to the weathering. I'm seriously at a bit of a loss. Just... so good.

That army is incredibly cool! I love the Mecha conversions, it does looks simple and makes for an intersting change of SM standard looks.

Can you tell us from what models you made each walker? Oh and maybe a little rundown of your painting technique/paint selection cause it rocks!

Sure I'll do a quick rundown of the basic core kits used to make each vehicle:

Each vehicle is fully magnetized, so all of the weapons can be swapped out, depending on what rules, systems, armaments etc, I feel like using that day.

The Heavy-Walker Mecha-Tank (nicknamed "Goliath" after an old Battletech mech) was made from the Dust Tactics Heavy Panzer model kit-bashed with a SM Predator tank.

The Artillery Mechs/ Long Range Support Walkers are made from AT-43 Defenders, I just moved the legs back on the fuselage a little bit to give them a longer profile and make them stand a little taller (if you look at the pics you can see a round shape on the side of the cockpit where the legs used to be.. The figure with the rockets is pretty close to the original model, i just added a space marine peaking out of the turret and a few more details from my trusty Tamiya WWII tank detail kit. The long auto-cannons on the other model came from the Dust Tactics Panzer.

The Space Marine Attack Bike is made from one of the motorcycle terminators from Terminator Salvation.

As Mentioned Prior:

The Gunship was from a Robogear Condor

The Warthog was a Heroclix model

I am currently working on a massively converted dreadnought, which I will post as soon as I finish (probably in a day or two).

The paint on all the mecha was actually pretty simple. I primed them all black, giving each one a solid coat. Then assembled the models as they would be displayed, stood them upright and sprayed them with a coat of Dark Army Olive Green holding the can pointed down from about 8-10 inches above the model. Then I went over that with a thinner coat of a lighter shade of olive Green, again only spraying from the top this time holding the can about 10-12 inches away. And finally the final coat using an even lighter shade of Olive Green, just a quick misting over the areas I wanted highlighted. this gives the models a pretty decent look already, as you now have all of your shadows and highlights etablished before you really even pick up a brush! Then I just picked out the details with fine brush and some acrylic hobby paint (I use vallejo, but any is fine). Then mixed a heavy coat of Burnt Umber and White with little bit of Fiberpaste (you can buy it at an art/craft store, basically gives the paint a sandy texture) which i brushed liberally around the feet/lower legs of the models. The rust effects were a mix of really thinned down Umber and Orange used to make washes for the dripping-rust effects and a couple old pastel chalks ground up and and then applied to the entire model with a dry brush. After that it is just a matter of hitting a few of the raised areas on the figure with Silver to simulate the effects of paint and tarnish wearing off. Last, blow off the excess chalk-dust, spray the entire figure with a very light coat of matte sealant, and you have a model that looks like it has been to hell and back!

Thanks for all the kind word and all the interest in my conversions! I'll keep posting more as I make them. Thanks for noticing the Heavy Gear influence, i never played the game, but I watched a bunch of the cinematics on Youtube for inspiration before I got started!

Wow you have some really amazing models both painting and converting wise.

I think I might borrow the Dust Tactics Heavy Panzer idea to convert into a Khorne defiler at some point once the new codex comes out.

Fantastic looking army.
