Before everyone assumes that I am a completely uneducated chav with no manners for posting this, let me assure you that I am middle class and snobbish on a startling scale. I do, however, like swearing.

When I used to play pen and paper rpgs there used to be a lot of explicit swearing from everyone around the table, as you would expect from a group of teenagers with a crate of beer. We were never the most serious rpg gamers and mainly used the game to have a good time and laugh our heads off at our characters' antics. Uttering the "c word" into the silence which followed after the main bad guy had revealed his "just as planned" scheme and similar use of expletives, was part of the humour which helped to make our gaming evenings so much fun.

Over 12 years after my last RPG evening we have moved to different corners of our fair isle, left with fond memories of the time that gnome barbarian tried to drop-kick a jar of flesh-eating beetles into the ranks of the advancing orc horde and ended up repeatedly screaming the "f-word" after the inevitable happened. Alas there is now a way we can all meet up and try to go adventuring together again: the mmorpg. It won't be the same, we all know this. We are older, aren't playing freeform pen and paper stuff and aren't in the same room getting drunk together. Swearing at orcs would still be good for some lulz, though.

Don't get me wrong, I completely understand why you're not supposed to swear in MMOs or on boards such as dakka. Children use them and some people get very offended by that sort of thing and shouldn't have to be subjected to it if they don't want to, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, I'm not really after a long discussion why swearing is evil etc. but rather wondered if there are any mmos that cater to a more mature (well, older at least) audience and where swearing is allowed. Mind you, I'm not after FATAL the mmo, but rather somewhere where drunk dwarves can say the c-word, because that is what they do. In a Glaswegian accent.

That is true, but most also have codes of conduct forbidding swearing. People get banned, language filter or not. People also sometimes turn them off to avoid false positives like the "penetrating shot" skill in lotro and then whine if they see swear words

As much as I hate to fanboy out, GW2 doesn't forbid swearing.

Though the language filter is set to no swearing as default it's just one tickbox to change that.

What's wrong with saying it in party chat with all those like minded people?

For most scenarios that would be ok, but I like the idea of a drunk staggering through a market square, saying bad things and people turn around and tut. Tut, mind you, not report him to the admin. The point of an mmo is also playing with lots of people, not just those in your party. If my character would swear in a particular conversation I want to be able to do that, not ask if it's ok to swear, invite them to a private channel and then call them a @&£$.

Sounds like gw2 might be the answer.

If you stumble around drunk and belligerent in public in real life you also get in trouble. If you walk around just shouting obscenities in public you can also get into trouble. Not really sure why you think being in an MMO means you have freedom to harass others without consequence.

This sums this tread up. Act responsible both in IRL and games. Nobody likes unruly drunks or people who swear like sea men at any given time of the day

Lol, if I was a troll you would have just fed me. Or maybe you're the troll and would like feeding by me engaging in the age old "swearing is harassment" debate. I'm looking for an mmo where I can play a character the way I see them. People swear. Mercenaries swear and so do grocers. I think a proper medieval market should have people swearing occasionally and if it doesn't have this it is a weird market. You don't like this sort of thing, so please tell me where I can do it away from people like you.

Also I would love if the guards came and arrested me for drunk and disorderly. Admin banning you is as if god snuffs you from existence for a week.

Maybe it's a cultural thing. Plenty of swearing round here. Also plenty of drunk people.

Context is going to be important, of course. In a pub I imagine no one would notice. Doing it in an elementary school might garner a bit more attention.

I distinctly remember copious swearing in secondary school from pupils. And it was endemic in secondary school

I've always found that most mmos are pretty light on their cursing policies, unless you do it enough to get reported...

I cursed as well, but I didn't run up and down the halls shouting it out, or in discussions with teachers, just in conversations with other students. It was already pointed out that one can curse all they want in parties and guilds, assuming one didn't pick the wrong guild, but OP wants to be able to just use language with impunity anywhere at anytime it seams, which doesn't seem reasonable since one cannot do it in real life either.

Funnily enough there is quite a difference to what you do irl and in a game. Being a thief or a murderer is not exactly good behaviour, but peorple choose to play characters whose job description is "thief" or "assassin". Well, I want to play a character who swears a lot. Not one who just spams swear-words,
But one who uses lots and lots of expletives in what he says. I don't really care whether you approve or if it fits into your vision of a candyfloss elf-hugging fantasy world. I posted this to see if anyone knew of a game where I can do that.

You are certainly making yourself out to be both mature and deserving of being treated with respect.

Lol.

Your rage is so sweet it brings tears to my eyes. Whatever, man. I never said I was mature. The respect thing was a bit off, though I think.

Have you ever played the witcher or watched game of thrones? Plenty of swearing there. Anyway, this is about an mmo where I can swear if I like, away from people who get offended and angry. Do you know of one? No? Why are you posting here, then?

MMOs by their nature are aimed at a majority market and at as large a market as possible. The people who want to be able to cuss freely are vastly outnumbered by those that have little or no desire to see it or have their children see it, hence why the filters are in place. The actual swearing is just one tiny facet of a character; are you really trying to suggest that not being able to swear blindly at every turn is severely detrimental to your game experience? At any rate, you are unlikely to find a mass market MMO that allows you to do what you wish for the reasons given above.

Thanks, mate. Sterling advice there. I think you'll find that I do control myself. I have on this threat, haven't I? No swearing at all. I also do not swear in mmo's due to the tedious reasons roled out again in this thread above. Thanks for patronising me, though. Much appreciated.

I would, however, like to swear in mmos and it would indeed improve my enjoyment of the game. So would hearing other people swear. Unfortunately it does not look like there is an environment where this can be facilitated. Well, there might be, but hardly any of the people who have decided to post in this thread are the sort of people likely to know, since if you are a paragon of moral fibre you are unlikely to seek out the places a low-life scoundrel such as me is looking for.

To be honest guys, thanks for reading, but I regret asking. This has turned into precisely the discussion I wanted to avoid. So, with all trolls thoroughly fed I bid you all a fond fairwell.

Most MMO's are targeted for many age groups.. Even though they may have a rating of "T" or "MA"

There will be children playing them, and there will be Mods Enforcing things.

"Here comes the.. Kids shouldnt be playing the games then"

Look at TV these days Game Violence and conduct is nicer then turning on the TV.

Secret World shooting undead with bodies all over.
vs
Turning on Fox and have one of the many Detective shows that have bodies all mangaled that looks like an actual real person.

There are plenty of good games out there that allow swearing tbh, if you want a normal fantasy approach then go GW2 whereas if you want a more gritty paranormal sort of thing (ala Supernatural or X-files) then go for The Secret World.

Hey so guys, I'm looking for a MMO where I can just ruin peoples day, just make them feel like crap to boost my shattered ego, but disguise it as "roleplay" because my tenuous grasp of the English language is not strong enough to really do things without being nonsensically vulgar.
Can someone help me out? Is there some game with lax rules and a shakey, unstable population? If I can cause a suicide it would really do it for me.
Hugs and kisses

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.
