Hello everyone,

I decided to assemble and paint a small BA army for 6th edition to entertain myself when I get tired of painting my orks. This is my test model for it based on a metal blood angels vanguard model.
This was also my first attempt at painting SM armour with zenithal effect. In the end I think it ended up being a notch to dark with not enough contrast so I might new to improve on this field. Was also my first attempt at OSL although I only got my new Krome yesterday and it sprays quite differently from the Patriot 105 so the control is just not there yet. That also ment ruining the power weapon, restart the weapon again and in the process spray white all across the armour. :( Managed to partially fixed but definitely need to improve my masking.

C&C are more than welcome so no need to be gentle. It's only with critics that I will improve.

I like this model. True, some could say it could be a tad bit too dark, even though I paint my BAs to be dark and muddy looking. The only complaint about it is that the base is red... Is it supposed to be red? Couldent you paint it stone colored or something? But besides that good job!

1600 points of red goodness!

Darker = more realistic, I always hated the bright red and yellows of 90's Blood Angels. This one's nice and looks more natural.

Personally I think it looks really nice. I like it darker but that is just my preference.

its probably red because the armour was airbrushed

I like the model, and would like to see an entire army painted to this standard!

Yep the model isn't based yet. Still need to decide what I am going to go for the bases. My plan is to use resin bases from Secret weapons miniatures, the runic temples ones. But due to the bit on these models I am probably just going for a plain one and add some sand and then painted in brown/grey tones.

What paints did you use for your red armor? I like it a lot.

My reaction was to take said die, and hurl it out the window of the 3rd floor of our student union. I then placed a Commissar model next to the rest of my dice pile. They immediately began performing much better.

That is some test model. I really dont see anything that needs improvement. This type of painting style lends itself to having a natural highlight to it rather than the forced hardlined HL most painters likke to do. I think the power weapon looks awesome as well....a good color choice. And the metallics just look great, I especially like the gold tone of the helmet. Its not dark, but a light gold....really nice mini

I primed the model with vallejo German Red Brown polyurethane primer. Then a zenithal coat was applied by using vallejo fire red followed by vallejo italian red. The last step was to apply vallejo light red just on raised areas of interest and vallejo burnt umber to create shade. The all armour then received a wash with SW drying blood washes to bring the colours together, Finally a pin wash with SW Heavy body black wash was applied.
Since some people asked for it I will try and do a tutorial when I start painting my squads this weekend.

Thanks for you kid words. The gold actually worked better than what I was expecting since I made a few mistakes and add to correct a lot of things but in the end I really like the result as well.

I really like it. Great look and very high quality. Like a lot of the people here I really like the dark scheme. I'm planning on starting a blood angels force myself soon with a dark look and lots of csm kit-bashing. It's also going to involve my first use of an air brush. With all that in mind, I would love to see a quick tutorial from you and I'm sure many of us would really appreciate it.

Good luck with the army

After 8 editions, you might have thought that GW could get fantasy right.

As promised here is the link to the tutorial of how to paint models to get the look of the model above. I end up getting bored on the wash steps, which takes about 10/15 minutes per model so doing it in only one go on two 10 man assault squads and 3 devastators squads is normally not a good idea.

Instead I have been focusing my attention on this fellow:

I have yet to decide which backpack I am going to use but will try and paint it today so once that is done and I paint the base I will upload the finished model

Excellent stuff. I too have a BA army near enough fully modelled but very little painted yet. Having got tired of GW changing shades of its own paint, I went with Vallejo and I am using the unimaginatively titled "Red" which is approximately what Scab Red or Red Gore (can't remember which) used to look like. I have a marine next to me in painted in the age of Angels of Death and although I quite like the bright colours, I too now prefer a more muted scheme. There's a Crimson Guard in my gallery with approximately the shade of red I intend to end up with. I wouldn't worry that yours are "too dark" - it looks great to me. I must get an airbrush.

I like the darker color, never into the bright orangy red of the BA. Really like the effect on the jump pack

Sorry for the lack of updates. Real life keeps getting on the way. I have finished Mephiston, been working on one of the assault squads and assembling a lot more stuff. Plus I am currently painting a malifaux crew which has been getting the majority of my attention. I did however get time to finish a scout squad. Enjoy
