As a hangover from the MFA/RAW dispute, which power weapon do you think is the best for your army?

My army was Chaos Marines so I went sword. Axe's are a little redundant when you have a powerfist as an option too. If your gona strike last you may as well do it at double strength. But if I had to go looks-wise axes are more suitable than a sword. So I'm kinda 50/50 on it really, rules wise sword (or fist), looks wise Axe (...or fist).

Where's the Power Fist option?

I, as an homage to Fallout, like to always dub mine "Fisto!", regardless of who's wearing it.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Fist isn't a power weapon.

I love my chaplains so it's got to be the power maul, you cant beat the S6 and although its only AP4 i've not had a problem with that (only played guard so far) concussive is an excellent factor as well

I think what Testify is trying to say is that in a codex the options listed under the 'power weapon' is either sword, axe or maul. A 'powerfist' is it's own separate option.

As a point of interest:

Axe vs MEQ - 1/2 hits, 2/6 wounds, 1/3 dead guys. 3 Swings kills a guy.
Sword vs MEQ - 1/2 hits, 1/4 wounds, 1/4 dead guys. 4 Swings kills a guy.
Maul vs MEQ - 1/2 hits, 5/12 wounds, 5/36 dead guys. ~7 swings kills a guy

Axe vs TEQ - 1/2 hits, 2/6 wounds, 1/3 dead guys. 3 Swings kills a guy.
Sword vs TEQ - 1/2 hits, 1/4 wounds, 1/24 dead guys. 24 Swings kill a guy.
Maul vs TEQ - 1/2 hits, 5/12 wounds, 5/72 dead guys. ~15 Swings kills a guy.

Not too shabby. Obviously changes as we go up or down in toughness/save.

Pretty much anything that can take a PW will have at least 2 base attacks, plus one for the charge.

Don't forgot that Power Axe still give you +1 attack for having another close combat weapon or pistol. So in other word, a typical sergeant character with power axe and pistol will have least 3 attacks.

Does it have to be a Generic power weapon?

If not, I would have to say a Warscythe.

From an Overlord charging (4 attacks)
MEQ: 2 hits, 1.6 wounds, no save, dead MEQ
TEQ (no SS): 2 hits, 1.6 wounds, 0.5 wounds saved, dead TEQ
TEQ (SS): 2 hits, 1.6 wounds, 1 wounds saved, dead TEQ

statistically will kill any 1 wound model on the charge.

For imperial guard, I go with the mace.

+2 S for a guardsman is nearly identical to x2 S given by power fists. Furthermore, the S of a guardsman is so low, that the extra ability to wound makes the maul BETTER than the axe against terminators, nearly EQUAL as the sword at MEq, and much better against GEq, MCs, and vehicles.

Plus, with I3, you're not losing much by not taking the sword, but retaining I3 means that you get to strike before power fist users, rather than simultaneously.

It might be different for armies with a good initiative, but the mace is still a rather strong contender along with the sword. Don't really like the axe of lance, though. The lance is just dumb, and the axe is just too ghetto of a substitute for a power fist.

On the turn you charge you get the fist entry as the Power Lance's Stats. (The one to the left of the / )

all other times you use the second entry. (The one to the right of the / )

I went for the Power Lance, because I think they will prove to be more useful than appear to be. They will not be the go to weapon. I will include at least one for each of my Armies. So far I have a Thunder Lord with one and I am going to give one to my Blood Champion just because it will look cool.

I love maces, even if they aren't terribly affective vs. MEQ. strangely enough though, they'd be better than swords would be.

The problem with the power lance is that they're only worth taking in a VERY narrow set of circumstances. All of the following have to be true for a lance to be better than some other option:

- The model can take a power weapon

- The model can NOT take a power fist

- The model can virtually guarantee getting the charge in

- The model is part of a unit that will likely comprehensively win a close combat in a single phase.

- The model is not attacking terminators (or anything with an Sv of 2+)

- The model is not attacking vehicles.

- The model is not attacking something with Sv4+ or worse.

Like, I keep thinking about this trying to come up with a set of circumstances where you think to yourself "oh, I wish I had a power lance!" The only time I think it is actually the best option is against MSU power armor spam, or on a model with hit-and-run. That's it.

You're also forgetting another important reason. The Rule of Cool

But then again, I like the imagery of Space Marines on Bikes with power lances, charging into the enemy (even if they're strictly a shooty unit).
