So, this is a little daunting as a lot of the stuff here is far more serious than my little project, but I wanted a place to show what I've done and try to improve. There's a bit of explaining to do first I think. Feel free to scroll to the pictures.
I am by no means new to Warhammer, but that said, I have never really put much effort into the painting. After a long break, I decided to start up an Ork army a few years ago. I picked up a box of boyz just to see how it went. Wanting to do something different, I decided to see how purple and orange orks look. The result wasn't pretty.
This was not good. I had wasted a boy, a boy with 2 shoulder pads at that! I decided 2 things. Stick with more traditional colours for this army, and practice more before I go near another actual mini. The result was this guy.
This was good enough and I decided to carry on with the rest of my boyz.
I enjoyed this project so much I went and got AoBR. I've had a busy few years and have had very little time to paint, but we are now finally approaching the finish line. Enough talk, here's some photos of the army so far.
Pretty good improvement there, that's for sure. It looks like their skin tone could maybe use a little more shading, but there's some nice attention to detail. Keep it up.
Thanks! Yeah, I think one thing that is really evident is that I have at least improved. This army has been a bit of a learning curve, some of the models have pretty huge mold lines etc.
The problem with changing the skin tone is I'd have to do it for all of them! but I agree, it does look a little bland. Any suggestions? Atm I go Knarlock->Goblin green->Thraka wash->Drybrush a mix of Goblin Green/Bleached Bone
Oh and I forgot my inspirational image! This is the only photo I found of this persons work, but I love it. I don't even know who did it.
I'd say maybe more Thraka, just in the deepest recesses to keep it from staining everything else, although personally I prefer a black wash rather than green, but that's just me. And possibly some more drybrushing. It may just be the pictures but it doesn't really seem to show.
I definitely second the props on improvement. The bright orange and purple ork is a bit too bright for my tastes- Its workable, but Im glad you went with a darker red scheme. I think it looks much better!
Your current guys are well done, if not a bit flat (as has been noted already).
One of my biggest recommendations would be to hit armor plates and especially metal with a dark wash, like Badab black or Devlan Mud, and then bringing the part back up to its original color. The key to that technique is to leave the darkest areas dark (where the wash sunk in to the cracks) and focus on highlights. This is my biggest difficulty, even to this day. Theres no easy way to highlight, and its something Ive never found a good tutorial for.
I really like how your models show some weathering on the red plates. That is a detail that brings your models a long way!
As to the skin, I second hungry's thought. You could even try mixing the black and green washes to get a dark green color. Then a bit more drybrushing, focusing on the raised edges, and it should be great!
Oh and before I forget, you should drill your barrels on the Sluggaz/Shootaz- its an extra step that brings great depth to the models. This can be done with the tip of a hobby knife, or if youre willing to invest in one (theyre like 10 bucks) try getting a Pin Vice. Its an invaluable tool, and can be used to pin metal models together so they dont fall apart.
Keep up the great work, and Ill be watching with interest!
Sorry for the delay and threadromancy, but may as well keep all of this on one page.
So...turns out I don't have the time for this really. Been very busy. But I really did want to do it. It's been nearly a year, so I forced myself to take some time out and put SOMETHING up here. Even for my own sakes of keeping some form of log.
The skin is still looking flat, I am planning on doing some washes someday. I still need to get hold of a drill for the barrels. But there is progress!
The Nobz and Warboss. The one with the Iron gob is by far my favourite, I should've put the focus on him really.

Whole Army
Playing around with spare parts, but the first musings of a possible deffdread conversion.
Thanks for the reply! Have put these photos up on a few sites and it's hard to get any form of feedback, so it is appreciated. The deffdred probably will happen. Am going to buy a Skorcha/Rokkit Launcher arm off EBay and stick em on. Then we can get going. However, my golden rule is to only buy new stuff when I'm finished with the old stuff. And I've got a biiiit more to do yet.
Yeah, if I was going to start all over I would probably find a wash-based skintone I liked. Bit late in the day to start that now though! I wanted some very bright, crisp looking Orks, as I've always thought Orks were the closest thing 40k gets to comedy relief. Big and bold were my primary objectives.
Hi mur. That deferred looks dead killy! Feels a bit off balance having the two guns on one side and the CCWs on the other, though.
Your painting is looking good, just needs some washes… but you know that from what I've read. Look into the new "devlan mud" equivalent, that stuff is suppose to be magic. Otherwise darker greens or browns work great for giving shadows a boost.

Thanks! It's nice to receive feedback, it's quite rare. Will try to get more light in future shots. Next up is the converted dread, so maybe that will spark some replies.
