Here's a cracking wee app that I totally rec/mnd

http://products.scriblab.de/paintmyminis/

It's for iOS so can put it on ipad or iPhone. I use it on the iPad as it's easier to see. Use it to save your paint methods, recipes and so on. Also can use as a shopping list for paints running low on. All the major brands' paint lines are available to download into your database for free. I've found it to be so handy. No more lost forgotten paint recipes

I've found having an organised paint rack has totally revamped my work station and how I buy paints. The ones I've accidentally doubled or tripled up on really surprised me. Three of the same yellow, anyone?

While discussing the painting of hazard stripes with masking tape, I came up with this useful tip:
 Dr H wrote:
Something you can do, if you didn't, is to start with the first piece of tape, then position another next to it, aligned edge to edge.
Then add a third piece, aligned to that one.
Then remove the 2nd piece and you have have aligned and spaced masking tape. Much more accurate than doing them by eye.

I usually find myself freehanding hazard stripes though. For small areas, large areas, I would probably do the above.

Use different thicknesses of tape for different thicknesses of stripe.

And to minimise bleeding of the paint under the tape; use a hard (but not sharp) object to firmly press/rub down the edges of the tape.
The handle of your knife (careful of the blade, maybe even remove it) or even a good firm fingernail would be good for example.

Having a drier paint helps with bleeding as well, most stenciling is done with more of a drybrush technique, and a straight down motion, which helps keep the paint from getting under the mask.

Hmm good stuff.

An app to record paint methods? I just use notpad. But then I guess I have my hobby/computer space within the same 5ft area or so. I have done a quick voice recording on my phone to save one I did elsewhere so I see the utility.

When applying crackle medium make sure to have a good solid primer underneath your paintjob. Crackle works by shrinking and pulling itself in, and without something nailing whatever's under it to the model it will pull the whole paintjob right off the model!

Scratch building is fun, and a great way to recycle materials, but you can have too much of a good thing. Hoarding plastic bottles, cardboard, and other scraps from the recycling bin will clutter up your house/apartment. Keep a few, recycle the rest.

Here's a wee one for ye which may be handy. The 'paint splatter' section in WDs can often give you some handy wee techniques and ideas on how to paint x,y or z....but where is what, which issue??? Fear Not!!! Google to the rescue. Type in something like 'White Dwarf Paint Splatter red armour (for example) and hit search, then click images. You're screen with be instafilled with photo of just about every paint spaltter done. the thumbnails should be big enough for you to find which one you're looking for - then just click view image and use your browser to zoom in enough to read it. Dont waste anymore time thumbing through endless issue for that one piece on how to paint a Slaaneshi naughty part.....let Google do the work for you

I just scalpel them out and put those pages in a folder every couple of months.
The annoying part is remembering where I piled them up.

Remember to shake your shades before you use them or they can come out extremely glossy! Then again, if that does happen you can fix it by shaking the same shade and applying over the top of the glossy finish and when it dries it has a more matte finish

Hm, I think I learned this month that you never have as much time as you think you do on a deadline, so paint NOW.
Stop putting it off.

If you analysed the time I spent 'painting' then I reckon time spent actually putting paint onto model would be bottom of the list, 90% of it would be one form of prevarication or another.

Tip of the day:

If you have a ton of unpainted hordes of models (such as skeletons, gaunts, etc) paint them while you paint other stuff.

For example, I paint ten skeletons/zombies whenever I paint other things, I got ten skeletons done before I finished two hexwraiths, the other mini's make the batch painting easier and when it is a different scheme painting some elite troops is really nice to break up the hordes!

Don't use any water soluble glue under water effects without painting/coating it first. It can moisten and turn white again leaving unsightly blemishes under your 'water'.

If you spill paint on your carpet, don't panic. If it's water-based (like most miniature paints these days), a little soap and water will clean it up with a bit of scraping with a knife (even a butterknife works). Sadly, I just had to find out firsthand with half a pot of Mournfang brown...

Remember to put other clothes on in the intervening step, too.

"Have always as much references as you can before starting with a new technique." will be pretty close to my other one "Patience. It's better to stop and rest and continue with the miniature later than trying to finish it asap just because you're tired."

To reduce wobbly model syndrome, weight models' bases by gluing coins to the underside of it. For models with slot bases, this won't work becasue of the ridge around the slot. Fill the underside with putty instead. As an added bonus, press the putty into the gaps between the slot and the ridge to create a stronger bond. It solves some of the fragility problems with metal models.
