I'm particularly thinking for a Chaos Sorcerer who'll be up for beating down the odd Sergeant for a chance at Daemonhood, but also in general what's the best option out of axe, sword or stave? I guess you'll want to keep a psyker away from dedicated melee units as a matter of course, but still the choice has to be made so what's the score?

Arguably, a sword, since it can pen all sorts of armor. Just avoid 2+ armor save (easy enough).
Staff is a good second choice though, arguably better because you can beat vehicles over the head with it rather reliably.

Depends on the Sorcerer's other gear and escort. One with more sidekicks and heavier armor is likely better off with an axe, regular power armor and/or operating alone makes the sword a better choice.

Staff is good if you tend to roll on Pyromancy or Biomancy for strength bonuses.
Axe is better if you have 2 Mastery Level 3 sorcerers rolling Telepathy to try and get Hallucination or Invisibility. Who cares if they strike first if they'll be hitting you on 5's?

I like doing a slaanesh sorcerer with a sword. You can challenge your enemy's character, strike first, and insta-death him, and roll on the boon table without even taking a hit back. Considering you have to issue challenges with your characters, an axe is less than ideal, as you'll be attacking last (and maybe not at all), though your two wounds could see you through. If you do go with an axe, I'd say take a sigil of corruption and mark of tzeentch for a 3+ invulnerable save.

Need to be wearing Term armour for the axe in my opinion, you will be dead before swinging in most cases without. Stave is great if you know your not facing 3+ saves eg IG, Eldar, Orks.

I like the Axe in termy armor
against chump champions it might be better to have a sword, but then why do you care if it is a force weapon. Anything you really want to ID is probably rockign a 2+ save or striking before your I4 anyway so take the axe.

For my rp one has a sword and one with stave. the stave is good at beating stuff down. str6 is very useful imo.
but it depends what you want to fight and what there is to fight.
I would avoid the ax because against crons you kill yourself with that.
Final thoughts go with stave or sword. ax is risky and you go last so you could just die and not even strike.
