is there any consistent description of ceramite's base color (before being painted) in the fluff? I'm working on a night lords army and want to do some paint chipping on their armor (probably using the sponge technique). I don't know what color would be appropriate for the chips, though. black isn't going to show up against the dark blue of the armor, so it's going to have to be something lighter. my first thought was some sort of metallic color, but since ceramite is ceramic-based, that wouldn't make much sense. any ideas?

If it's ceramic based, it's feasible that it's not painted, rather made from the relevant colour in it's entirety.

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

metallic-colored ceramic? huh, hadn't considered that. maybe using a gunmetal color for paint chips isn't crazy after all

I always thought that the surface would be a smooth, nonmetallic grey. Underneath the finish, however, I believe it would have a slight powdery metallic look. That's just my take, though.

So unpainted ceramite is dull grey..the basic color of unpainted GW plastic, great give the unpainting crowd another excuse to field the unpainted masses .."its not grey its raw ceramite ! "

I would think that the ceramite may be sandwiched between two thin layers of metal (steel or a sci-fi improvement thereof) so that the ceramic nature of the armor is not compromised under combat situations or rough handling. Therefore a metallic color is not out of the question. IMHO.

Every piece of fluff I have read has described bare ceramite being a dull earthy grey. And yes marines do paint their armor for the various chapter colors.

The Salamander's novels in particular stick out. A bunch of unused armor is discovered aboard a lost mechanicus ship. It had been newely created when the ship was lost and had never been used by any chapter.

In the books I have read they mention when their armor gets damaged the grey under the paint.

And to prove it it is always grey before I prime it too.

Iirc the Carcharodons don't paint they're armour. Neither did the pre-heresy DG as Eldarcaveman also noted.

I also remember reading something that mentions a tank on the assembly line that had not yet been painted and its ceramite was a dull grey colour.

I know can you believe that even games workshop didn't get Ceramite right -- it should be grey.

I understand they grey that a lot of people are poiting out. I am going for a pale tan/ bone color for mine which contrasts well.

I'm pretty sure they just couldn't come up with another name for white and some ... one .. decided that "ceramite" sounded cool.

According to the HH books, the dusk raiders were un-painted white ceramite with red shoulder (right i think) to show they were the right hand of the Emporer himself. when mortarion united them with the people of his planet (Barbarus) and they became the death guard, they took the green on their trims and the encircled skull as their new badge. so they are actually white.

ok, so the general consensus seems to be white or light/mid gray. I've yet to try it (will test it on a plastic spoon when I get the chance), but it seems like using a light color like this over my dark blue armor is going to look more like snow or dandruff rather than paint chips. any suggestions for how to make this work?
