I am surprised you guys have such trouble finding that foam. I wonder if its a climate thing. It is dirt cheap.

Thanks bigfish, the ice angel fluff still continues actually. Link is in my sig.

Top two pictures are of my trade for lucifer. Bottom one is squad Ashurbani that is FINALLY going to get painted. At least that's the plan.

Top image is of my marine swap I've been working on. Nearly completed at this point. The second picture is of one of our newest ork boyz. You can never have enough boyz and when my buddy picked up the newest box of savage orks we had a blast creating and painting them up.

My brother has done something similar with the savage ork set, although nothing quite so striking. Were you planning to add tattoos or anything to them?

Absolutely! Whenever you have a big green mass of muscle like that it begs to have a tattoo on it. I feel like the savage ork models must have tattoos on them.

Squad Ashurbani WIP. As you can see I've gotten a couple different degrees of progress on them but they are coming along. I like the way the color scheme is coming across on them.

At some point I hope to get my boarding master painted along with my own special character, the Unspeakable.

It's because it's subtle that I like it. I always imagined that the brightness of these guns would rise and fall depending upon what stage of the shot or charge cycle it was in. I actually find it quite refreshing that the OSL is not taking over the base colours of the miniature.

Thanks guys! I don't use lighting effects nearly enough. I have always loved both the subtle and the over done lighting on models but I don't seem to recognize the times when it should be done other then the blatantly obvious searchlights and head lights. I am trying to do it more often on the plasma weapons and small lights on special equipment etc.

Side note: I finally got what I needed to resume work on my terrain spires. They are currently drying after their glue and sand dance.

I haven't been able to as much modeling in as of late but I have managed to sneak in some time working on these guys. Number 1, we have my first attempts at creating a frozen river. Please tell me what you think, any suggestions? I have about 13 more river pieces already cut out and ready to be worked on. The other two pieces are the nearly completed spires I started awhile back. They came out great. We've already played a game with them and they are very effective terrain pieces. My collection of hills, difficult terrain, and now impassible terrain is very nice. All that remains is to make some rubble / buildings and the river.

Thoughts on the terrain so far?

Dang Ice... somehow your blog fell off my subscription list. Have missed a bit.

I like the OSL on the dread. I don't really like the weathering though. The black (OK dark) pitting on the white just looks odd. I'm not suggesting that you didn't do the weathering correctly... the extreme contrast just doesn't work for me.

I like your terrain. Reminds me of the terrain pieces I made back in 3rd edition... had a lot of fun with those.

OSL : awesome, check.
Frozen River : looks like a *real* frozen river, check.
Huge Icicles Forest : awesome, check!

I somewhat agree with Git's feeling about the weathering, though it only struck me when he mentioned it. Before that, I was all about the OSL lol!

What do you suggest other then the black? Silver or a lighter gray?

Thanks Vitruvian, that's what I was shooting for.
40k Ninja wrote:Cool ice bergs. How did you do them?

I actually cut up 2.5 inch insulation foam in long pieces and then stood them up. The key was the cuts in short back and forth motions.

Thanks 1-i, I didn't think about that. I am not sure I would add a darker blue and because of the foam we didn't prime them because it eats the foam and I actually don't have any black house paint at the moment. You don't often paint any part of your house black, lol. If I did I would give it a shot.

Thanks Yggs! The OSL wouldn't have happened without you, lol. Do you have an idea how I should change the battle damage?

I'm glad the river has been such a big hit. I have already started the long process on five more pieces. Should be a week or so before I'll be able to post a pic of them.

Yes. (either would work fine, though a light grey would probably be most appropriate)

So I just got back from my vacation to GenCon. It was phenomenal as always. Didn't play any warhammer or even a games workshop related game but had a blast. Throughout my vacation I did manage to work a tiny bit on my river. Below is a picture of the pieces and where they are at so far. It ended up being 6 pieces that can span my entire 4x8 board with two turns in it. Gives me plenty of options to work with. I may make one more straight piece but as of right now it is a good starting point. Currently I need to glue down some texture and then begin the painting process.

In other news I did receive my marine in the mail from BBL. I need to base him. I've got another swap to work on and then a buddy of mine picked up a deff dread for me as well. PLENTY TO DO!

I almost forgot to mention. At GenCon I went to a couple great seminars one of which was on writing novels and short stories. It was a list of things not to do that many amateur writers often do. As you can imagine I took a lot of notes and am hoping to improve upon my own story with this new found list. Keep an eye out for that once I get back into writing!

After double-checking, I'm not so sure you should change things on the weathering itself.

I think the problem comes that there's too much contrast between the highly-weathered "hull" (in white) with the rest of the model, that have little to no chipping. It's even more striking on the plasma "barrel" : it is painted white as the hull, though doesn't have a single chip!

I also think a brown (Graveyard Earth?) could do the trick for the chipping... But I've never weathered white, so who knows? Actually, I've only weathered one piece of scenery lol...

I'm glad the OSL tutorial helped!

As for GenCon... Could you write a list or a summary of the important traps to avoid? Recently I've tried beginning some fluff for my chapter, but I've started at least a dozen times from 3-4 sides of the story, and I just seem to drown myself in useless ramblings & details... So any trick might prove really helpful!

Thanks guys! I can see your point Yggs. I can see your point with the weathering. I will try to go back and weather the gun barrel along with some of the other bits to see if that helps. As for the fluff aspect I will respond to that on my fluff page in a few minutes.

Any one have any river thoughts or tips?

Nice table! I Really like that scenery.

As for your OSL on Brother Sattawatzu; great stuff. In conjunction with the white of the body it gives a real powered up and HOT! charged feel. Great job!!

Oh and a Tip: Come to NZ and build me a table like that... Oh and teach me how to play this game
