I love the idea of plasticard, btw. It looks good. And I think I have the exact same ruler.
Congrats on getting your wheels fixed dude, hopefully we'll see you and your brother around the gaming tables more often. We need to get some action going with my Space Wolves and Bretonnians.
If you go back a few pages, you'll see I bought the GW movement tray sets to cut up and make bases for my Saxons/Vikings. This left me with a lot of borders, but no pieces to affix them on. I thought I had enough movement trays for my WFB Bretonnians, but fielding the army last night at Fat Ogre showed me that I need better trays for my Archers and for my Knights.
I've got a lot of hobby supplies and had picked up several sheets of plasticard months ago, so I hit upon the idea of cutting them up and using the borders I already had instead of trying to build borders, its fairly cheap and uses stuff I already have. Alternatively you could make the borders out of more plasticard or a similar material.
You could even make a movement tray out of card stock or cardboard, or even balsa wood.
Though I'm fairly convinced that magnetic movement trays would ultimately be a better option to both keep models from falling over and aid in transport.
I need to get in some resin casting to make my own bases with cylindrical holes that I could insert a magnet into the underside. I'm going to talk to a few guys at the Ogre about that idea.
May the Fourth be with you, yet always be aware of the Revenge of the 5ith. #StarWars humor.
Happy Cinco De Mayo! & it is Free Comic Book Day here in the States! I hope everyone makes it a great one!

Spoke with my resin base casting buddy and we came up with an idea of dropping rare earth magnets into resin bases while the resin is setting, there by sealing the rare earth magnet into the base.
Worked some more on the men at arms, boltgun metal was added to the rims of the tower shields and then they were glued to the models. Apparently I have more models than shields... this vexes me.
More work continues!

There's a company making magnetized resin bases out there, so, clearly, this is the new "Hot basing" idea for the 21st century! The casting class I took at Adepticon really de-mystified the process for me, and if I get into fantasy, I'm totally going this route.

Magnets & magnetic basing is great for games like ancients or warhammer fantasy, you've got a lot of models in units on trays, so moving them and having all the models tip over isn't fun and just kills time. Additionally, if you can pick up the tray and drop the whole thing into a big square of foam you don't have to worry about individually packing each model in your force.
Due to the varied nature of sci fi genre games and round bases, this isn't really an option, unless you're using a large piece of sheet metal in a tupperware bin or your bag to magnetically store your models bases into place.
Magnetizing hands, arms, legs and weapon load outs for ever changing models has become a must and money saving tool for a lot of gamers who can have a single model do multiple things based on the weapon load out. The same would go for vehicles even more so.
leohart wrote:MOAR MOAR MOAR. I want MOAR Bret awesomeness.
I want to see your Bretonnians sir! I've got more incoming shortly!
I've got like 10 men at arms models without shields, so I'm going to have to get creative or buy more. Trying to build a block of 50 men at arms with the same uniform coloring, so I'm going to have to get more. Actually two blocks of 50, but the second unit will be a different set of colors.
I like to have options in a force, which is why I build so much.
Right now, there is so much going on the table its crazy, I've got to focus on one set of things and finish them off:
Boltgun metal over white P3 Primer gets a Knight so close to done its silly, still more work to be done.
Pegasus #5 inbound
Simple Boar Knight conversion, trying to make Knights with unique heraldry and devices. Trimmed off the sword impaling the boar and voila, new heraldic device.
Setting up a variety of Knights and horses as well as the Pegasus to be primed White with P3 White Primer, I used a cardboard box and a respirator to protect myself and the area around. I've used toothpicks and clipped wires/paperclips to suspend the knights above the cardboard so I can rotate them individually while priming. I have a pair of gloves that I wear as well, they're designed to prevent cuts/slashes from a knife blade, but I find they work just as well with handling wet primer painted models.
More Archers/Bowmen set up to be primed with Army Painter Leather Brown colored primer.
Two Trebuchets & Crew models as well as Several Mounted Yeomen models, all metal. I like to double prime the old metal models when using a colored primer like Army Painters Leather Brown. I first wash the model clean to get the 'metal dust' off, then I primed with P3 Black primer, waited for it to dry and then hit it with the Leather Brown. I find that the army painter primer doesn't sit well on the metal models, so with the addition of the black primer for the army painter to bond to, it helps both the paint and the model.

Love the trebuchet. Those things are as expensive as Land Raider while the point cost and damage is puny :|.
My brother got the airbrush and compressor but didn't get the hose so we are kindda "hosed" for now . I have been busy with work so watching your stuff grown is what I am doing these days.
Regarding magnetization, i find infantry models to be too cheap that it is better that you just buy another box and make all the variations that you want. For vehicles especially larger ones, it is definitely a must to magnetize them all.
You can use a predator as a Rhino with the right magnetization. Pop on a 3rd party turret and that can be a Razorback for a different build too. The possibilities are many for Rhino-chassis vehicles.

Thanks Dude, but there are two Trebuchet and while expensive, they're well worth the points for breaking up enemy units well before the knights charge and finish up the job. You want those units smashed up a bit before the knights hit them. I'm happy with the way the colored primer came out, I need to hit the metal bits with either chainmail or boltgun and then dry brush a light tan around the wooden timber pieces to sort of mimic cut wood.
Get the hose! I need to start looking into an airbrush set up, over time my army painter colored primers + P3 Black & White primer techniques are going to get expensive over time as once I complete an army, I seem to start another one, or at least I keep getting armies together and building them up, I need to finish some of these. John over at GW Tomball said I could use the stores airbrush and Cody said he'd work with me using his. So I could provide paint and get some stuff knocked out fairly fast ( i.e. the Mordian Iron Guard ).
For the magnet info above, magnetic bases for infantry is what I was referencing for warhammer fantasy or a similarly large infantry/movement tray based game.
Space Marines and 40K wouldn't really benefit from magnetic bases. Yet, Terminator sized models or special character models would benefit from magnets in the arms and shoulders as well as hands for different weapon loadouts. The Same would go for other games like Warmachine, Malifaux, etc.
I completely agree on magnetizing vehicles hatches, weapons, sponsons, etc for use as multiple types of vehicles.
I'm going to preface that I did not paint this next model, it was painted by a talented local painter at Fat Ogre Games & Comics named David, he's got a lot of great looking models and I only picked this up from the stores collection to bring a CC purchase up to a proper limit.
Painted a lot of horses and other items last night, lots of work and I'm getting models built to add to my forces. More Archers and more Men At arms as well as a lot more Knights!

Some more work is getting done, putting together so many Knights its ridiculous.
Trying out some Helm/Head modifications to create different Crests:
trimmed the horn off the unicorn to make it more of a Knight chess piece look.
Its a little difficult to see, but I added one of the shoulder Fleur De Li pieces to the center piece between the two horns to create a unique look. I used a pin vise and small drill bit with a small bit of cut paperclip to assist with holding it in place.
I was talking in a group chat about another player who was going to paint his Tyranids black and grey, I told him to put some color on the models and suggested purple! So I decided to try some different colors for my Knights. I've got some mixed thoughts about these color patterns and would like y'all to weigh in with your thoughts
As well I did some work on the Pegasus models and the Griffon, but I'm not showing those yet, lots still to do.
As always Comments are welcomed!

It is probably important to note that Purple has always been the colour of royalty, and you might want to consider reserving it for your character models.
That said, how large is your @*)$#$@)# Bret army going to be? 10000 points?

Purple is generally reserved for Royalty in this realm, but not in the GW / Warhammer Fantasy realm, the Kings colors are Red / Blue, the colors are taken from their parentage, one color for the father and one color for the mother. So they're always going to be different.
I like to have a lot of options, so while I haven't calculated the points I've got and am currently building, I already know its a lot and I don't mind that. Having the ability to go big with a game or to have models that another player / friend can borrow to test out the force is always something I think of.
Now, that being said, more work was done! FYI: paint, then assemble bretonnian horses, paint the inside legs first, then you won't have to go back or try to fold a brush sideways to paint them, I'm finding with these models I assembled that its hell trying to get to the inside legs. I'm almost tempted to leave the horses white or black.
I can't say this enough, but take pictures of your models, they really show where you've missed a spot when painting. These are some shots of my color tests for heraldry/knightly colors:
Here's the currently assembled horses in the box, I need to work out a better transportation system for these. Once I get them painted up and sealed I'm not going to want them to bang against each other and chip. Debating supergluing magnets to the undersides and getting metal movement trays for both gaming and storage.
These are also on the table, they're a local friends and once I get confirmation, then I'll be able to add them to my force. They've been sitting in his garage for awhile and he's not going to do anything with them.
Knights Errant
Knights of the Realm
Knight Errant, Damsel with Familiar, two Paladin / Knights on foot.
More Peasant Archers:
Some more Pegasus Knights, some actual Grail Knights, a Green Knight model, lots of good stuff!
So the force is growing! And, I still have a lot of bits, men at arms, Knights, etc to put together.
As always comments and critiques are welcome, I'm especially interested in what y'all think of the color combinations for the individual Knights, I know they're very basic, but I have to start somewhere with them.
Thanks!

Update! Had a buddy up at Fat Ogre Games & Comics help me get a good head start on my second unit of 50 Men At Arms, lots of trimming of mold lines, gluing of heads and those pesky halberds! Big Thanks go out to Ben for his help with these guys!
In progress:
More work continued into the night:
Two units of 50 Men At Arms mostly assembled or ready to be primed! I'm currently out of the Army Painter Leather brown paint primer, but I've got an order in for it now. You can see that I've done some test painting with some primed black models, yet I think I'm going to hold off on anything else with them and wait to prime them all brown to keep a uniform look to my Peasants.
I've got a few extra Men At Arms models and was considering kit bashing them with some Empire Flagellants to make Grail Relique Peasant Pilgrim types, just a mixed bag of crazy.
The Red/Yellow Contingent from Bastonne
This unit will be Red/Blue
Here is an example of my Bretonnian bitz bin, trimmed and sorted bits and pieces from the men at arms and bowmen as well as the knights:
I've been working on some unique Knight helmets utilizing Chaos and High Elf bitz and these are some of the results:
Working with some Chaos Marauder Flails to give my Knights some variety when it comes to weaponry wielded, I trimmed off the hand from the flail and drilled out the center pieces of the handles and the Knights hand. I got the hand from an extra lance that had broken so the arm was available. I'll use a single pin to secure it all together. I'm going to prime and then attach the flail then paint it.
Here is an idea of what the Knight will look like with the flail
Due to the storms and the lack of some color primers I'm not able to prime my models, I really need to get some of these mounts heads painted and then assemble the horses, the Knights shields as well as the men at arms. I'm also going to need to decide on the heraldry color schemes and get some of those settled. Most of the Men at arms and archers are done, but still some work to be done to get these models in line. I'll need to seal them with the army painter shade varnish and then hit them with a matte coat.
As always, C&C is welcome! Have a great one all!

I do like having options!
Prepping Men At Arms for priming by sticking them to cardboard on top of masking tape, this keeps the models from falling over and gives me something to hold/rotate without touching the models when I prime them.
I always set my models inside a card board box when I prime them, this lets me not fill the rest of the building full of paint and keeps the area clean.
These guys are starting out primed black due to the fact that I'm out of my Army Painter Leather brown color Primer
Not much of an update I know, but still an update!
Thanks everyone for stopping by, commenting and giving me your thoughts and ideas on the hobby, my models and everything else!

I got it in my head to do some conversions last night and am about to head home and do some priming of models in my garage before the big storm tonight
creating unique men at arms models, just drilled a hole into the head of a model and stuck an arrow half from a terrain piece into the hole
That man is dead.
nah, it didn't penetrate the skull and he's just a peasant so he has a tiny brain
Should I put an axe in a dudes head or his back? Back. Since an Axe in the head is very cheesy B-rated horror flick-ish, so I clipped an axe off the terrain piece bit and trimmed it up, then drilled a hole for a pin in both pieces.
I wanted to give one of the Men at arms a lantern, but holding it in his fist, so I clipped a weapon off a hand, then cut the top of the lantern off drilled into both and then glued it all together.
And here are the results of my 'unique' men at arms conversions and bits using bretonnian, chaos marauder and some Knight bits
Archer Hero
Bannerman
Hawkman
Beerman
Axeman
Lantern Jack
Sword & Flail
Bobby two Flails
Spike's got balls
So thats a good selection of what I was working on last night, lots of lining up of bits, figuring things out, clipping plastic, trimming plastic, then drilling a holed with a pin vise, clipping a paperclip to use as a pinning tool, then lining up pieces and gluing it all together.
Please, let me know what you think! C&C is always welcome!

Haha, Irony at its best, I'm going to need to write their names on their bases too. I'll probably get some fine point colored permanent markers to do that.

Thanks dude! My Army Painter color Leather Brown primer should arrive at Fat Ogre tomorrow, I've been up there in the evenings and should have my models with me. The army is getting rather large, so I need to look into some cost effective transportation.
So, I've been doing some work and have uploaded almost 200 more pics to the Dakka Gallery I've created for my Bretonnian Army, still priming models, slapping paint on new models and repairing old models. Trying to match and coordinate paint jobs on the men at arms and archers to match various Knights or Lords in the Army, so I can say they brought their own peasant levies.
I've been collecting and using a lot of the Army Painter color primers and hopefully to good effect. I think though that over time, it might be good to begin looking at investing in an airbrush. I am it should be noted, running low on the army painter colored primers, so I'm going to need to start making a decision whether to keep using them or move to something new/different like the air brush.
Chose colors and lined up the shields on painters tape, set it at an angle
Primed using the Army Painter Bright Red color primer first
Once the primer dried, I divided the shields in half using painters tape again:
Then I primed them using Army Painters Navy Blue ( Now called Ultramarine Blue ) and let them dry for several hours, peeled the tape away and bam, crisp clean lines and divisions between the colors
Now I just need to prime the reverse of the shield brown and then I can use boltgun to paint the edges of the shield, it will be done. I also primed some Knights shields as well as some more men at arms shields to finish off the ones needed for my first unit of 50 men at arms. I used the same painters tape priming technique I'd previously outlined with the colors for this unit.
I set up and primed black my previous men at arms conversions, just waiting on the army painter leather brown colored primer to show up at my local FLGS Fat Ogre Games & Comics.
I had forgotten to prime a lot of the horse heads when I primed the horse bodies, so I sorted the bodies by colors into zip lock bags and then sorted the appropriate heads into each bag and took them outside to prime them according to that color separation. Rather than using painters tape to cover half the head, I've decided to just leave the head a solid single color and move forward with completing the paint job on the horses.
I have some new additions to my force (more pics can be found in the gallery):
Some work in progress on another Archer unit, These were painted and then shaded with the army painter soft tone shade, its like an easy button, but I recommend using a brush to put it on and not dipping the models.
So thats a bit of an update, The army is coming along very well and I've got a ridiculous amount of points so far. I haven't even begun to think of adding it all up, but I'd easily be able to do a 5000 point game I'm thinking. Its a mix of a lot of old and new models. I'm on the hunt for some of the more unique and hard to find models like Bertrand the Brigand and his merry men, I know Gui Le Gros is still available through GW and some other models are as well, but some like Morgana Le Fey and a few others aren't available.
As always Comments, Critiques and all responses are more than welcome!

I definitely recommend getting an airbrush. The entire thing cost ~300 but will allow you to do away with all the $15 cans. So far you should have blown through about 10 of those cans. That's $150 there.
Plus, you haven't even done the big vehicles (LR, ....) where an airbrush will really shine. Another thing: airbrush doesn't have as much over-spray as these cans.

Most of my painting is consisting of painting armored Knights and to show this, here's my box of 70+ Knights
So lots of Boltgun to chainmail to mithril silver is happening, then I'll match up with the horse colors and paint the accents on specific Knights.
Also I'm working on a kitbash from the Ogre Kingdoms kits if I can get some of those shoulder shields, I'll use them on my knights as their shields.
C&C is always welcome!

Oh yeah definitely, I've got the Knights to paint in individual heraldry, then more Men At Arms, Archers, the Damsels, I need to finish up the Trebuchets and horse mounts as well as numerous other models need to be cleaned and prepped like these:
Damsel and mount
The Fey Enchantress Morgana Le Fey & Damsel
an old Repanse de Lyonesse model (missing some pieces)
The old Bretonnian Pegasus Hero and other mounts
Grail Knights & Mounts
Knight on Foot
The Green Knight (missing some pieces)
I need to do more research on these older models and make sure they're correct and all in one piece.
I've also wanted to add pennants and banners to the 5th Edition plastic and metal Knights I've got, I'm thinking of using the pennants from the High Elf Silver Helm cavalry regiment I've already got and for the painted metal Knight Errant models I will have to cut banners and glue them in place along their edges.
So a lot to do to make this army look amazing, hopefully.. I'll just keep plugging away at it.

The bottom damsel is Lucrezzia Belladonna a Dogs of War special character and the blokes just a Knight of the Realm not the Pegasus hero. Or at least I'd certainly use another model as the Pegasus Hero. Good haul actually.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

I think so as well, every single model will be unique and awesome, they're still progressing. You need to pick a single color and just go with that, quit painting and repainting them, just do like I did and go grey with red accents, then they can be SW, BA, GK etc.
Llamahead wrote:The bottom damsel is Lucrezzia Belladonna a Dogs of War special character and the blokes just a Knight of the Realm not the Pegasus hero. Or at least I'd certainly use another model as the Pegasus Hero. Good haul actually.
Sweet! Thanks Llamahead, I'll make sure she gets incorporated into the Ladys Religion properly, though I'm thinking her dress will be red and therefore she can double into Vampire counts.
That is an old Pegasus Hero Knight model, at least the model is stamped so and I was looking in a 2010 GW catalog and the models match up.
Did some work with the painters tape and the knights shields to do something similar with the dual primer technique for unique heraldry, check it out:
Cut the painters tape into strips to test out the design.
Cut the painters tape into strips and then taped the shields up in my prime box, hit them with the red primer next to match the horses
And the results! Primed designed heraldry, ready for some clean up and more painting, the shields will be matched to the horses that were dual primed and then the Knights will be painted with red and yellow accents, then assigned to horses. I'm still debating on gluing knights to mounts, it might make it easier to store them without, but then for each game it would make the set up time take longer.
Speaking/Writing about horses, I painted up a few more mounts and glued them together, these will be horses to match up with the shields painted above.
I had extra paint on the pallet and went to work on some additional horses as well as some of the Pegasus wings
That is the update for now! Let me know what you think, I've been toying with some other ideas for the heraldry as well as some additional painting techniques. I'm still waiting for my Army Painter Leather Brown primer to come in at Fat Ogre so I can finish off the second unit of Men at Arms.
I've played a few games with the Bretonnions that I do have painted and gotten stomped both times, though I was playing against tournament list players, but still it gave me some insight into the Brets, how they'd react to certain rules and the need for me to work on placement strategy. I'm also thinking I need a better 2500 pt list.
As always C&C is welcome!

This nights work was spent assembly line painting Knights with Boltgun Metal. I had previously primed most of the knights with a white primer and its flaking or 'snowing' so I'm not happy with that. Several of the Knights were primed black with P3 Primer and the Boltgun metal went on smooth and in my opinion looks better than on the white citadel primer. I need the primer to be white so the bright colors of the knights show up better.
The cup on the right is filled with distilled water and boltgun metal, this is now a wash that was created when I cleaned my brushes off in the water, I'll be getting a small glass container and pouring this into it to save and be used in the future as a wash.
Work is continuing, going to switch gears and hit some of the horses again with some paint jobs and get their trims and trappings worked on. Automatically Appended Next Post: Added some new colors to some of the horses and had a little extra green left over and so I added that to a unit of 20 Archers
