Curious as to what people do. I'm painting some daemons, and I'm basing them with a desert/scrubland theme, can't decide how to trim the bases, so I thought I'd ask Dakka!

Paint them as if they are a direct slice out of whatever my model is standing on. If it's mud then brown, sand then a dirt colour, concrete then a stone colour etc.

I paint them the colour of the squad identifier. Red shoulder pads, cyan guns, purple helmets, whatever I've used to identify a group.

Glitter and lace.

No, I usually paint my bases with three colors. Dark, mid, light. FREX: I use burnt umber as a base coat and put that color around the rim as well, then I move up to a medium brown - but only on the top of the base where I've textured, then I hit that with a tan to get the highlights. After all this I go back and touch up the edge of the base with burnt umber.

This would work with other colors as well.

Armies: Space Marines, IG, Tyranids, Eldar, Necrons, Orks, Dark Eldar.

I always use black. I am not a fan of other colored rims to be honest.

Crons with green sand. I leave my standard troops with the black bases, but any of the RC or HQs get a gold base so I my opponent can easily identify those members.

Models that preform exceptionally also get painted gold. I had a Storm Cryptek with the LF hold off 20 boyz with a nob for three turns. He died horrendously every CC, but he had that squad down to 11 by himself and was still kicking at the end of turn 6.

Paint them black or whatever so they match the colour of the base. Then add a squad identifier to the back of the rim. It makes it really easy to tell what's in which squad then, but also doesn't break up the black rim while you look at it from the front or take pictures of it.

Can kind of see them in this pic.

Sympathetic. Just as the basing shouldn't overpower the model, the base's rim shouldn't overpower the basing. I do use black on my orks, but that's coincidental - they're based with black sand, drybushed up with grays. I don't bother with identifying marks, personally, as my squads are distinguished by the models, themselves, and, at least in 40k, have no directional limitations to their LoS. On an Infinity base, though, where there is a front and rear arc, I split the rim with two appropriate, but distinct, colors (e.g. Haqqislam desert bases get split between yellow ochre and terracotta).

the tops of the bases for my IG army I do the same, with sand and rocks with the occasional bits of greenery. The edges I do differently. I do the squad all the same, IE S1=brown, S2=black, S3=green, etc etc. My command I have edged in black. Models that are able to be in different squads, like flamers, grenade launchers, etc, I line them with the sand and rocks. Same with my hvy weapons squads, rimmed with sand and rocks.

I personally like painting them black as it brings the eyes up to the painted model. If you painted it a brown it would mute the models and the base. At least that is my opinion on the matter. Of course it is all up to you.

I paint the whole base goblin green and then flock over the top of it....cos I'm oldschool.

Seriously though, It's normally scorched brown or graveyeard earth

I generally go with brown or dark grey, depending on which one works better with the base.

My current army is on lava/volcanic ash bases, so I have the rims painted brown to not be too similar to the ground.

My doods have a desert scheme on their bases, so I went with a medium brown to both downplay the rim of the base and to accentuate the desert flocking.

I paint 'em black. Years ago, of course, I painted them Goblin Green, back when that was the standard. I'm kind of sheep when it comes to painting the rims of my bases.

I prefer black just because I think it looks tidy.
Painting a rim in a similar colour to the basing also looks fine though.
