We all have good unit that we always take and know will preform well.

But does any one have that one unit or character that isn't the optimal army choice, but you take it none the less, just because it always seems to do well ?

For me it is a Grotsnik with a unit of 10 boyz and a nob in a truck. I give them Heavy armor, cybork bodies and a PK to the nob. They have the habit of taking a huge amount of fire and stay around a lot longer than they should and always take a few things with them.

I know truck boyz are not that great, but for some reason this one particular unit always rises to the occasion.

Actually everything with ACs on it works way better for me than you would normally expect. I really get those rending 6s when I need them.

As I like to say, use what you're lucky with. You can use statistics to talk about 40k, but the number of dice we actually roll aren't anywhere near large enough numbers to have an impact on any given game, much less a small set of them.

That said, the only unit I've ever been particularly lucky with is conscripts, but you have to build your entire list around them. It's enough to be lucky with something to include it, but it's probably not enough to build your entire army around it.

I'd have to say lychguard with dispersion shields on foot. They usually kill something, but man do they draw a lot of fire/lock down my opponents melee troops. Over all they are very good at getting in my opponent's way and then just refuse to die.

My Daemon Prince (I've named him Sedecim) has played a key role in my chaos army from the beginning.

In 5th He'd have MoT, wings, warptime and one other power, and in 6th he has DoT, ML2 (Usually), wings, PA.

His battles have seen him running rampant for seven turns, annihilating scores of guardsmen, and several vehicles (against a fraggin' gunline!). Other times, he flies in at the right moment, and the right place to assassinate my opponents most valuable unit (usually a HQ).
He's duelled with Darnath Lysander (which has always come out as a tie for some reason), and forced an entire waaagh to turn around just for a hope of survival.

Every time I field him, I always expect him to get shot down, but to date he has never failed to make an enormous impact on any battle he has ever participated in.

A DA rhino that I have angels wings painted across the front. It blew up a stormraven full of terminators and blocked LOS to a tac. marine holding an objective for 2 turns from a assault cannon razorback and vindicare assassin. That was in 1 game. A game against tyranids had it proxied as a whirlwind. Took out a 30 man termagant squad (lost 10 models and later in the phase I took out the synapse), half a full squad of hormagaunts, and most of a genestealer squad. It has survived many battles and pulled its weight easily. I treat it as a revered and highly honoured brother of my DA.

My twenty strong Chaos Terminator cadre, having given them FW upgrades and the odd minor modification they have up to this day accounted for anything that have ever crossed blades with them.

Also due for a honorable mention are my Thunder wolves, they never fail me nor do they die.

Two PM squads, who've yet to completely die off in a single game. They're seven men each, armed with 2 plasmaguns or 2 meltaguns. I've had them face down about a hundred orks, and still not get tabled. (Never underestimate their ability to roll an unholy number of 5+ saves). The FnP on these guys have proven to be the death of so many enemies it's unbelievable.

A single Typhphoon / Heavy Bolter Land Speeder. I always assume it's going to be the first thing to die, for the easy First Blood, but it's only gone down once in seven or eight games. On top of that, it's the only Fast Attack I feel I do any good with, skirting the outside and picking off stragglers. It repeatedly kills more points than I paid for it.

A full squad of Gun Drones. Between JSJ and the ability to shoot twin-linked Pulse Rilfes that can cause enemies to go to ground, they're quite the pain. Sure, they're stats aren't the best, but they're very annoying if used correctly.

Nephilim fighters have worked surprisingly well for me. I use them to get the back armour of tanks and flyers. throwing out 7 s6 shots that hit on 2's plus 3 more s5 can make a world of hurt.

They have a leadership of two. That they didn't run off the board the moment someone killed one of them in assault is a miracle. So I think this is the best example in this entire thread.

In shooting or assault? Because one is much more impressive than the other.
