I have been seeing alot of people wishing GW went bankrupt or close to closing.

And I thought to myself if theoretically GW went belly up what would be the effects on the industry?

IMHO the effects I would see is that it would be harder to recruit new gamers to the industry> The reason being in my experience a lot of people I met started GW then started other games afterwards.

Without GW's exposure in malls and otherwise, I think the industry would see a decrease in new gamers.

All of this is just based on my own experience, so I could be wrong on how the industry actually works.

Where would we be able to read posts about how people are so much better off for quitting GW products and spending their money elsewhere? They're really interesting posts.

No more 40K RPG products, and that would make me very sad as both a fan of the RPG's and a writer of the RPG's.

There would be no more GW stuff. I'd take my existing models and use them on another system and I'd go play Warmachine as my main game but I wouldn't cry... except for the lack of Leman Russes. I love them funny looking tanks!

Remains get picked up by competent/mature gaming company's

IP gets shipped to better uses and can finally get the spotlight it deserves. Video games, BL stops its current bs, advertising to increase the overall hobby, and so on.

All around, a good scenario.

Honestly things couldn't really go further downhill so a change of hands would at least give the community a fairly clean (if still jaded) slate on which to begin anew.

The IP is too lucrative to simply fade into obscurity in an instant, so someone will snap that up for sure.

If GW tanked, someone would buy them out, and the company would continue with a new governing body, and a new debt. gW won't tank. And if it does, mantic and privateer press are right there to pick up the slack. I would love to mention the other manufacturers, but I don't actually know their names/ forgot them. GW won't tank. Look at general motors. That company should be dead in the water, with wee fish nibbling at its carcass. Didn't happen. GW is in for the long haul.

Why pick on GM, fricking Chrysler has been bailed out twice in my lifetime.

GW wont be going down anytime soon. There will be time for a thousand of these weekly threads about GW failing before it actually dies.

If GW went down....

It would be harder for new blood to enter the (small 'h') hobby. But it can be argued that GW, by its recent corporate decisions, is already making the hobby less attractive.

Really, if GW goes under, I would greatly prefer it to happen because somebody else has taken their place.

In much the same way as Pathfinder is replacing D&D 4e, it would be nice for [Your Game of Choice] to replace Warhammer and Warhammer 40K.

Of the two... I think that Fantasy is a lot more likely to have someone move into the slot....

That said... I think that it is more likely that GWs IP will be bought by another company, hopefully one that won't run it into the ground.

And, like a lot of folks, I think, I would much rather see GW drop Kirby into an incinerator and go back to being a halfway decent company. I would rather see them fix their problems than go gently into that good night.

From what I see, most people refer to pretty much all manner of small soldiers as 'warhammer(s)'. From this alone I'd guess we'd see a massive decrease in the size of the market, although in reality, as others have already said, they'd be snapped up in seconds.

If they really did stay dead though, Reaper would have a heyday with me.

Skipping the hilarious first couple of responses, this guy has it right.

Hasbro, Disney, someone would buy up the IP before you could say "CREEEEEED". And, we might actually feel good about buying the models/rules again....

That's a really bad comparison. Comparing a major auto company to TT gaming is nonsensical. (And the only reason GM is still around is government bailouts.) GW is a big fish in a small pond. TTG is niche, and even the "biggest" company is a few missteps away from bankruptcy. (TSR would be a better example.)

Nothing bad would come from their dissolution I think. They'll just be taken over by grownups and the game might be worth playing again.

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

The point is even a company that tanked badly still survived. GW wouldn't tank so bad that someone somewhere couldn't buy them out.

Except that they didn't (or would not have). Left to their own devices (ie. no bailout) they would be gone. Essentially they got some divine intervention to save them.

Your comparison is invalid.

Ignoring for a momment the issues of bailouts, GW could quite well go under. Unlike some companies like General Motors, where the brand actually has some intrinsic value...the brands which are valuable under GWs control are not the GW brand. It is the 40K brand and to a lesser extent the Warhammer Fantasy brand. Much like when TSR was bought up by WotC...whoever might buy GW would dump the GW brand as soon as they could. It carries nothing but baggage for anyone who might buy it.

Agreed. The 40k and WHFB universes = very attractive IP. GW by itself. Nope.

I've been to a couple of FLGS that had awful customer service. By going in and not being a regular, they'd just stare at you until you paid for what you wanted or left. Now I know this isn't all of them, but its been more than one store.

Yeah, it's the IP's they'd be after. I'd actually dump the GW brand altogether, too much bad blood.
