I know this may be a duplicated thread, so if it seems that way please remove.
I recently posted up a question about how people user their Aegis Defense Lines. Now I am wondering what is the best to man the gun behind the lines? Whether it be a Quad Gun or an Icarus Lascannon.

I have to go with Fastshot Avatar on an Icarus, even better if you spring for it and give him Marksmen.

My favorite is BT termie squad with dual CMLs and tank hunters.

4 TL S7 shots with interceptor, skyfire and reroll to pen is awesome.

If there aren't any flyers then you can shred stuff on the board.

If you're rolling with the quad-gun, you don't need anything better than BS5. And if you're running Chaos, Daemons get cheap Heralds who are BS5. A Nurgle Herald and some Plague Bearers on a home objective behind the line. Herald controls the gun while the whole unit sits comfortably back with a 2+ cover because of the defense line and Shrouded.

I'm a sucker for either Bloodletters or Warpsmith. Both are BS5 and both have some resistance to Heldrakes while being right around 100 points.

Lelith Hesprex on a quadgun ignores armorsaves and has high BS.

The 4++ might save her from heldrakes but she might get ID as well.

We made it this far into the thread without anyone mentioning the Vindicare Assassin on an Icarus? BS8, he picks who dies. Ironically the only time he's better off using his rifle is for Turbo Penetrating tanks. (Or against T8+)

Fast Shot Dark Reaper Exarch is better than Fast Shot Avatar though, as he ignores jink...

+1 for this.

Illic can be pretty good as well for sniping wargear out of squads.

If you're playing Chaos Space Marines, you can't take heralds in an allied detachment of Daemons.

I think that means that you can only take one Herald in your allied attachment's HQ slot. It doesn't explicitly say "No Heralds for allied attachments".

That would be because it's 145pts for a model that isn't good at doing anything else in the current meta as you have already pointed out, and because Ignores Cover is too prevalent now.

I think that the Avatar with fast shot is better than the dark reaper exarch because of the BS 10. Just more reliable.

Dark reaper exarch with fast shot..
2x Str9 Ap2 shots at 2+ to hit
Between intercept and no jink saves alowed (reaper range finder) =win!!
It mean the avatar can be out front shooting tanks with his melta where he belongs!!

First he HAS an antitank gun.. And for near 200pts "back of the mob" is a criminal waste!!
Second taking the jink save is important..
Third you should be precognitioning/ whatever psychic power gives you rerolls.. Since that's all BS10 gives you..
So the points of a fast shot avatar you jus got a lot more shooty and a psycher to boot (Avatar of course being ALOT more survivable..)
Did I mention no jink saves?

Illic attached to a reaper squad.

BS9, splitfire, all shots are precision, gives reapers shrouded, reapers give him reaper rangefinder (ignores jink).

Hits a 2+, misses reroll to 3+.

Wait I thought range finders were items that effected per model basis.. How does it confer to the squad?

Another vote for Telion.

I also like putting a Dev squad in it, using the signum with the Quadgun. Stacked with whatever other heavy weapons are in the unit, they tend to kill stuff pretty easily.

Agreed and they are pretty cheap compared to the other choices here.
