Pistons can move other pistons, but only while unpowered making it a bit of a fuss to set up. Just have 2 pistons instead of one at the top, first pushes down the one attached to the door which pushes the door down when in place.
i want sort of a main enterance to get into my city so thats why i chose the door to open up and down rather from the sides. i was hoping to have something there that i could see through so that i do not open my gate to creepers.
is it possible for skellies to break glass, i might just use glass instead of wood.
i would like it if was possible to keep fence stacked on itself in a column to retain the "pole" shape when next to another fence pole rather than merge into a fence. then i could make a gate with bars.
I'd actually go for the raise-lower method. Or you could look up that guy that does the 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 doors, too. He's got a way to make the pistons pop out, then grab stuff, then pop back in. It's pretty crazy to watch.
OH, and it's almost impossible to navigate around that world btw. Not a bad thing, just a thing.

Thing is, I've yet to even see a Nether Portal. We need to organize public transportation- it's nice that there's roads, but right now they're not really marked, and go every which-where. Maybe having road names, and Nether-route depots?

Most portals lead to people's houses, so are usually locked away inside their property and only accessible whilst inside the nether. There are a few portals that haven't been locked away and are open to public use, but the only one near the spawn-point really is the sanctuary portal; Brandywine is probably the next closest on the surface, but after that i'm not sure.

A cool new WIP mod.
before watching this, I stress the "in progress" part. It doesn't work yet, but when it does... wow.
BTW there's shadow of israphel spoilers about 4 minutes in.

Its such a good and simple Idea, although I can see any vehicular mod becoming very buggy :(
yeah. If notch implements something similar:
-the server would crash some more.
-getting around will be much cooler. you could make cars, pirate ships, planes...

Hm. I need to go somewhere far away in the nether and build a large oblong building in there-- as in, a huge one-- and then have a portal on each end of the building which leads to two "towers" in realspace that go up from bedrock into the sky. So the building essentially would stick up from bedrock in the nether to sky in realspace.

Well currently im at X -1821, Y 85 and Z -321. On the West(f 0) side of my hut theres a small area of water which could be filled with dirt or w/e to make a nice flat bit of land.
I'm there now. I'm gonna scout around a bit when I get home from work, but this seems to be an OK spot for us to congregate and prepare for building a new city, just gotta build your own shelter, ours isnt big enough for everyone lol.

The image is vertical, not horizontal.
W = the wall, preferably not the exposed part.
R = redstone, linking to the switch. The one on the top sticks out more to make sure it can have a stair leading down.
C = Block in ceiling which is pushed down to make the door.
F = Block in floor which is pushed up to make the floor.
E = Empty space which the blocks are pushed into to make the door.
P = Sticky Pistons
i went with something like this where its just a single sticky piston pushing a block up and one pushing a block down, i used glass so i could see through the gate.
its a nicle little setup i made, its activated by pressure plates infront of the gate so i just run over the plate and by the time im at the gate its open and then it closes behind me. its pretty simple once i figured it out and its nice and compact. i will be expanding it so that there are pressure plates on the other side to let me back out.
i tried the double piston method but it only works if you are using sand or gravel as a block stuck to a retracted piston will not move if you move the retracted piston. (if that makes any sence) i sat and fiddled with the double piston gate for hours and it just doesnt work the way that i thought it would, altho at one point it glitched and worked but i could not repeat the glitch.
is there any way to remove blocks of bedrock? i was messing with invedit (i know, im bad) and i decided i was going to use bedrock as floor material. anywho in my overeagerness to make my gate more functional i placed bedrock blocks instead of cobblestone and i broke my circuit and now i cannot get it to work again unless i demolish the whole thing.
maybe this is Notch's way of telling me to buy the damn game and play on the Dakka server

Should be back now. If it's ever down for more than 15 minutes and it's a reasonable hour in GMT, check here to see if I know about it already and then either PM me on Dakka or on Twitter.
well i decided not to download another editor, so i made a new world.
i wanedered around for a bit before i finally got out of the tundra biome (it was freaking huge) i managed to collect 20 pumpkins in my travels and i finally came across a nice large plateau that is a cliff on one side and a sloping hill on another.
this is where i decided i am going to build my castle. the great earthmoving project began with me flattening the land out a bit, had to take some off the top and then fill in the lower section.
i started blocking out the rouch outline of my walls. i decided to use cobblestone as my foundation and then after a certain height i switched to smooth stone.
unlike my sandstone city i am not going to encircle the entire thing with 4 block thick walls, i will only put those in places mobs can actually get to.
so in my planning ill have my automatic gatehouse, a barracks with secret side enterance and a tower.
Well, I managed to get my Tower of Eternity down to ground level (building it from the top down for simplicity's sake, as odd as that sounds). I might actually raise its roof a couple floors though, after I build it down to bedrock.

Got my piston door to work. This is version one. When I get more materials and finish this floor of my tower as well as the entryway, I might actually try to change it into a two wide, two high sliding door and replace the wooden block with smoothestone or iron.

The problem is figuring out how to work the redstone of this contraption more than anything. One switch activates all six sticky pistons at once, closing or opening the door in a grand entryway.

But everything is satisfactory now. Replaced all the dirt in that room except for the skylight blocks with cobblestone and added walkways to make it look much more industrial and less makeshift.
Now to move the tower further down, which means lots and lots of digging. And lots and lots of cobblestone. And broken picks. Thanks for everything, biccat
