So I had my first true 'guilt purchase' yesterday...

You know, that purchase where you feel bad, you know you shouldn't be spending that money, but you can't stop yourself and as the money changes hands and you feel like you just bought something illegal and/or immoral in a shady back-alley. Somehow you justify the purchase to yourself, but deep down you still get those pangs of guilt...

Yeah, so I needed some brown wash, I went for the Army Painter strong tone wash instead of sticking to GW (as much as I resent the price rises, I've always used and liked citadel paints, and decided to dabble in something new for a change).

Look in my wallet, no cash, need to spend minimum of £5 to use my card (which is a very VERY common thing in stores that aren't national/global corporations).

So somehow I managed to justify spending ~£17 on the newest expansion for Smash Up! (it's a board/card game for those that haven't heard of it) so I could use my card to get a single pot of paint. I know I shouldn't have, I'd already spent my hobby budget of £20 for September, I'm still paying off my Uni overdraft and getting married next spring, so I should really be saving what little cash I have...

Anyway, afterwards felt terrible, wouldn't say I lost sleep over it, I would have bought it eventually anyway, and I haven't gone around flagellating myself to try and repent, and it's not like we are going without food or running water because I blew my last £20 on some toys, but it's the first time I've ever felt a twinge of guilt for spending money on hobby stuff. So Dakkanauts, what was your last guilt-fuelling purchase? how did you justify it to yourself? how did you repent for it?

I've get buyers remorse all the time

I went to france for the day when I was a kid with school - my mum gave me £20 for emergencies. I bought a skateboard. That was the first time I can remember...

I bought 'Bumblejumper' off ebay - its an incorrectly released transformer from years ago.
I paid £50 - then sold it for £50 the day I got it as I really couldn't justify it.

I got it for this

Lasted about 2 seconds...

And last, I'm going to get it when I finally get round to buying some warp talons

My guilty pleasure is any Warhammer 40k purchase I make. I have plenty of models for my armies that I don't need anything new, but some of the new kits are fantastic, and they'll always kind of be my first love. While I play, I don't play frequently or at a high enough competitive level to need all of the best toys. Example of this? I have a Sternguard, Tac Marine, and 25th Anniversary kits waiting for me... I don't need any of those.

The way I repent for those is to actually build them, paint them, and play with them.

I have been on a huge hobby non-spending spree since moving house last year.

Things occasionally come along that demand to be ordered anyway; like this one:

http://www.hlj.com/product/KBYKP-259

It is a particularly guilty purchase because I really don't have a practical use for it in any game, and probably I won't build it for years.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I have acquired quite the large collection of X-wing miniatures, which I really shouldn't be spending money on. I feel kinda guilty every time I buy something for my collection (but it is just so fun!).

There are sites I order from that offer free shipping if you spend over a certain amount of mawneys. Some times a crazy part of me requires me to buy more stuff than I actually need to reach this level (that is rather steep, mind) and save in this 8 dollar shipping fee. That makes me feel like a dirty filthy person.

The last really guilty purchase I made was the GW mega paint set - back when they were the hexagonal jars with screw lids.

I didn't need it - I had loads of paint already, I just couldn't help myself.

Yes I did this too.

I have been deliberately not buying much gaming things (except the Kickstarter stuff that I bought ages ago that is slowly turning up now) as I literally have no more room in the house - I'd have to kick either the Mrs or kids out and I'm sorta attached to all of them so that's a no go.

Anyway a few weeks ago the Family went away with the Mum-in-Law on holiday so I went to Wayland to buy some terrain bits for a Necromunda campaign I'm in and have to wait while they go to the warehouse to get everything. I grab a beer and watch an X-wing tournament that they are running, get chatting and before you know it I have the starter set...or two. Within three days I was at another store getting a ton of boosters and a case to hide them all in - the perfect crime!

The Mrs found the receipts still in my wallet at the weekend.........

I am free from the sin of guilt, at least until the wife catches me. Then i can be very remorseful

Last guilty purchase, i guess, was my FOR. I don't play often enough to really get my money's worth out of it, and it will take forever for me to paint and convert.

But the prospect of an Ork-looted FOR was too tempting to pass up...

The last thing I felt bad that I splurged on was GW's Lord of Skulls. Its big, its expensive, but I found it on sale and I wanted it. Felt a little silly spending that kind of dough on a model, but I really wanted that thing.

The only "hobby" purchase I immediately regretted (or ever regretted, really) was the $450 I dropped at the strip club at GenCon when I was hammered.

I mostly felt guilty because I'd have rather spent that money at St. Elmo's (Steak) or at Nicky Blaines (Cigars & Whiskey) than on a mediocre looking stripper that, admittedly, smelled like candy.

I dont even play fantasy nor do i play marines well i play RW but still..........

Not so much as hobby guilt, more of just general money spending guilt.

I was living in an apartment with my girlfriend and we didn't have a lot of money. I purchased a box of devastators for my army, and decided to sneak them in with my backpack of school stuff so she wouldn't find out.

Walked in and felt guilty and spilled the beans. Direct quote:
"I bought a box of warhammer. I put it in my backpack so you wouldn't find out."

She forgave me. Although she is mad about deadzone (we are trying to save up for a house)

Wow, timely. Makes me somewhat paranoid.

I did it yesterday. I was on my way to meet my wife and kids at the playground and she asked me to stop at the gas station to get drinks for the kids.....

The game store is right next to it so I just happened to run in and grab a $70 box of BoomHowlers, that I had been constantly talking myself out of for the last 2 months.......

The thing is most of us probably already have enough hobby stuff to keep us going for a long time without buying any new stuff except paints and the like.

I know I have a pretty big SM army mostly still in boxes, (some of the boxes being 20+ years old!) as well as four factions out of MERCS and three factions out of Infinity, all waiting to be built and painted.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

1500 CSM in box
RW that needs to be painted
Cygnar the only models ive been giving attention to
Khador still in boxes.
and just took up KOW orcs.

I traded off some stuff for DA greenwing stuff
and going to buy more stuff for them.

I have way to much going on and can not seem to break the habit of buying crap i do not need at the time! The game shop is 10 min from work and thats where i head after work. I always poke in to see whats GOOD. And walk out with crap i do not need! I started to carpool with the wife in hopes of avoding the plastic addiction i have! She hates my hobbies!!!

It was one of those Victoria's Secret style cotton candyish type smells that when I'm drunk can apparently not resist.

C'est la vie.

Specifically gaming wise, I sorta regret spending money on a few of the larger FW models i have, but mostly because I'm not even close to getting them painted.

Don't feel guilty. Those girls are working their way through medical school. It went to a good cause.

My guilty purchase was for a Stormraven. It was pricey but I wanted it. The bad thing is that I want another one for my Blood Angels.

When she told me she would never get around to opening the boxes and painting them due to life and such I said I migth be intrested. Soon after I found myself owning a horde of Bretonnians.
