I just bought the 25th Anniversary Crimson Fist Model because my store had one left over. I opened it up on my way back to work and noticed that it had all the issues people were complaining about last year... *shrugs* oh well I knew what I was getting myself into. But a 25% store discount makes it feel better!

You know, that purchase where you feel bad, you know you shouldn't be spending that money, but you can't stop yourself and as the money changes hands and you feel like you just bought something illegal and/or immoral in a shady back-alley. Somehow you justify the purchase to yourself, but deep down you still get those pangs of guilt...

You just described all of my hobby purchases. Literally every single one.

I spend the holiday season crying silently from shame.

Actually I do plan my wargaming purchases quite carefully. I built my first ork army on my late teens with odd jobs and pocket money. And I lost my job shortly after getting back to 40k on 2009, and remained jobless for most of the year...

Now my finances are looking good again, but for some reason I don't indulge myself in binge shopping, at least not when 40k or any other wargame is involved. Some dark corner of my brain associates little plastic soldier things to living on a budget.

So I must confess, my guilty hobby purchase was the nearly 1000€ I shelled out on DJing equipment back in 2005. I've used the thing like three times ever, it is just there, taking space and catching dust.

I don't find myself running into regret very often. If a new army is released, I hold out on buying the miniatures until I have the codex and my intended army list all worked out (along with paint scheme and conversion ideas) - by this point I'm fairly certain that the army is a go.

My only major regrets are:

Dark eldar were fairly new at the time (I still one day want to build an army of DE) and I saw a deal online for 35% off reaver jet bikes and hellions. So quickly made a crazy themed list with hellion troops and 3x 6 man reaver squads. I bought 6 boxes of each. Only came to about $300, but still regretted it as the army would not be competitive at all and would be very repetitive to build/paint. I sold half the kits for around what I paid for them - still have 3 of each kit sitting in a box... debating on whether I will actually one day get around to building a DE army.

My next regret is my 1/350 IJN yamato kit. I wanted to get into building scale warships and thought what better way than starting with the largest in WW2. The thing has been a WIP for 4 years and I have 2 warship kits (that I like a lot more) waiting to be started, but I won't let myself until I finish the dang yamato lol. My PG strike gundam is also on hold until the ship is done sigh...

Lastly, my 2012 Argon 18 radon bicycle (I cycle around enough that it can be considered a hobby). I have zero regret as the bike is fantastic, but it is incredibly awkward every time my friends say "what.... you spent $1700 on a bike?!" At least they didn't charge tax and I got 1% cash back on the purchase haha

I just bought Mice Mystics yesterday. I was planning on getting a new board game for myself and the wife, but at 80 dollars Mice Mystics is on the pricey end for a board game.

There was no real need to get it, and I should have tucked it away for a Christmas gift or something, but I had been on the road by my lonesome for a week and I was feeling spendy.

Such things happen. Just so long as they don't happen too often it's fine. At least that is my opinion.

I bought an army of Dark Elves about five years ago. Didn't play Fantasy then, don't play it now, and at no point inbetween.

So, anyway, seems like this is the thread for it...

Anything I buy from Games Workshop becomes a guilty purchase. I don't play the game, and whilst I mostly paint for pleasure I don't get the additional use out of the figure to ease my guilt. My partner also knows I've given up on GW, and questions when they see product boxes or bags.

I'm also feeling increasingly guilty with kickstarters. When I pledge I tend to try and get everything on offer, including every stretch goal and multiple copies if I want to rope friends in. Sadly this means I'll have a glut of figures I will struggle to paint, and I'm not good at resisting kickstarter (looking at you Darklands and ShadowSea).

I don't seem to get buyer's remorse or guilt over buying something.

Perhaps it's because I'm not really much of an impulse buyer.

When I started gaming, I wasn't earning a lot (min wage job) and couldn't get a credit card (they had minimum income restrictions back then) so if I wanted something I couldn't afford immediately, I had to save for it.

This situation persisted for several years - by that time, the mpulse spend part of my brain had so atrophied, that even now, when I CAN afford to get stuff on impulse, I don't.

I only get stuff I actually want or can use in my gaming.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I'm usually pretty good about this, actually. Things planned weeks or even months in advance.

Recently, though, I've done two. The first was to buy the CSM codex. I was going to anyways... when I had the cash for it. But there it was, in very gently used condition, for 50% off on the clearance rack at my FLGS. I just had to have it at that price, before it was bought, so I bought it...

... and felt so bad about it that I had the clerk rip the price tag off and stick a new one on for $12.50 instead of $25, so that I could claim it was REALLY on sale when I got back home.

The other was an ebay purchase made shortly after the codex. The guy was basically offloading his small CSM army. In the end, after doing some trades of the stuff I didn't want, I wound up with 32 khorne berzerkers (12 still in box), which will get ripped apart to make other power armored models, 8 terminators (most of which came with combi-meltas), 11 bikes, the DV lord, and 16 cultists. Basically an entire army...

... and there it was, on ebay. with a $35 price tag... and there was just 30 minutes left... and no one had bid on it yet. A whole CSM army... for basically nothing. It said it had three people watching, so if I wanted it, I'd have to bid higher than $35, but how much was I really going to spend on something I didn't stricty need (already have in-box stuff to work on for CSM).

I sat there, staring at it as time filtered through, still no bids, still other watchers, all of us waiting to strike. I went back and forth. I shouldn't have it in the first place, so don't bid, or bid $36, and if I don't get it, so what? Except that it would eventually become nearly $300 of stuff, and I'd get around to painting it eventually. Surely it would still be worth spending $50 on it, because that would still be a HUGE deal, and when would I see something like it again?

As the time ticked down to my magic 30 second mark, I finally gave in to the impulse. I had to bid. $65, at the most, nothing more, I don't need the models right now. Or fine, fething $70, but that's a round number, and I could get outbid AT $70. 15 seconds left. I'd have to Bob Barker it.

$71. What am I doing? Click the button to sumbit my bid. The auction ended.

When the dust cleared, there had been a flurry of bidding at the end. Several people trying to get it below $40 were booted out right away. It was just me and another person. Ebay will incrementally bid up to my max, which meant that if the other person had only bid, say, $60, I would have won it for $61 and gotten to keep my $10 extra.

In the end, I won, with a price of $71. If the other person would have bid higher, it would have been $72 to him. Instead, the other person bid exactly $70 as their maximum bid. And I'd Bob Barkered him.

On the one hand, I got a killer deal. On the other hand, I was an impulsive lunatic for like a half an hour for something I didn't strictly need.

And that's why I don't go to eBay anymore.

Was probably my guiltiest hobby purchase, and likely will be for some time...

Feels a bit wierd posting again so late in the day, but at least I can see I'm not the only one who gets the pangs of guilt, and some of these have been far bigger than my measly £20 splurge, so thanks for cheering me up about it!

As a suitable atonement for my guilt, I've decided to cancel hobby budget until after I have completely painted my Infinity Bakunin force and Bushido Savage Wave warband (aside from purchases required to complete said tasks e.g. superglue/paint/etc.

I do feel a bit bad for my skaven army, I bought a bunch of skaven just before I moved from uni back home, where at the time the gaming community was non-existent. Most of it is de-sprued but otherwise untouched, but I've never felt guilt y about it.

I just bought some 2nd ed Marines yesterday and this morning at work for a super secret project I'm working on. I'm at least close to finishing my Dark Angels so I can justify it a little bit, but I've still got a pretty healthy amount of stuff to paint. I actually held off from buying new models for about two and a half months though, so I'm pretty pleased with myself. Still feel slightly guilty because I sure as sugar don't need more power armor, but what can I say, I love Marines.

bought my 3500 points of marines in one go... At retail price... was like 800$ and wiped out all my savings (i was too young for a real job so it was neighborhood dog walking money plus allowance i saved up for like 3 months) i was sick for a week. Then the minis, paint and glue came and i forgot all about my troubles. Now i live in the middle of nowhere and am seriously starting to consider selling them (ive used them in 1 game since 6th came out...)

Absolutely nothing wrong with canned ravioli.

When it comes to 'I'm alone, ill and can't be bothered to cook, I need comfort food' canned ravioli is up there in the top 5

1 tin heinz ravioli, 2 slices toast, more grated cheese than is strictly necessary, sprinkle of chilli flakes, bam!

I would have felt really guilty about dropping $100 on my Khador Conquest if it hadn't been for the Amazon gift card I got for my birthday, and if the mini weren't already discounted. It was still really hard to push that "buy now" button, even with both those considerations...
