I might be preaching to the wrong crowd or so, since going to the arcade and playing arcade games seems to be a dead art soon...

So Dakka, when you were young and/or go to the arcade when you can this day and age when you get the chance, what is the Arcade cabinet you start to rush to and is your favorite to play?

It used to be Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for me, then this came along and grabbed my attention a lot. I enjoy the hell out of this game and I wish it could get a console port possibly....

I used to love the 4 player co-op games like X-Men and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Then I mostly started playing fighting games after Street Fighter 2 came out. Before any of that though the original Double Dragon ate up many many quarters after Tae Kwan Do class on Friday nights.

TMNT, Altered Beast, Gauntlet, the Terminator shooter game, Silent Scope, Afterburner.

Hit up an awesome bar in Denver a few months back called 1up, full of classic arcade games, pinball machines, and what have you. I recommend it thoroughly. I think the newest game they had was the Simpsons sidescroller.

Plus it was super fun listening to 21 year old girls gush about how much they love frogger. Equal parts Lol and Ugh.

Gauntlet: Legends, House of the Dead, Time Crisis...those are the ones I can think of right off that have eaten most of my money.

Gauntlet was always amusing, but not built for a quick 5 minute play

Got that right. I remember at some point in my life I was in an arcade overnight (was a special party when they rented the place out or something) and one person there just sat in front of the Gauntlet machine the entire time and beat the game in one sitting.

The only one I distinctly remember enjoying over the others was the X-Men one.

Time Crisis! 3 in particular. Any form of DDR machine is also great for a laugh when you and your buddies have had a few.
Going further back, to *actual childhood* (shudder), I didn't get TOO much arcade time but side-scrolling TMNT was always great.

Ye Gods yes. The Mac's on the way to my school had one and I was late a few times because of this game.

Other classic quarter-munchers were SpyHunter, Raiden, Mortal Kombat, Elevator Action and GALS PANIC.

Soooo many quarters...

Back when these things still existed I would always hog anything that even remotely resembled games like Raptor, galaga, tyrian etc...

A lot of fast food places had like a single arcade machine and I had top scores on all the local ones.

I stopped playing arcade games when I realised I could buy most of them for my playstation.
I clocked tekken 3 on the arcade on one go for 20p...

I still love my side scrolling beat 'em ups though.

I have the X-Men side scroller one from psn...

WENDIGO!*

*Yeti type monster with a high placement on brand awareness and self promotion who only shouted his own name...

I also liked Streets of Rage, Street Fighter 2, Afterburner.
Nowadays, I just play the arcade games that I can't easily replicate at home - so time crisis, that aeroplane game where you sit in a cradle that can rotate 360 degrees etc.

The funniest thing I've seen was a friend going on Ridge Racer and the arcade had a full size Mx5 to sit in and the screen was the entire wall. A friend paid the price of £4 for a go. He sat in the car, put his seatbelt on, adjusted his seat, messed about with the mirrors...
Spoiler:
Then chose manual for the gears and didn't make the first checkpoint...£4 for roughly 20 seconds, it took him longer to get in the car

Golden Axe is by far my all time favourite.

RoadBlasters, Space Harrier, Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter 2, Daytona, House of the Dead 2, Cyber Sled and Star Wars/Star Wars Trilogy are some of my favourites as well.

I would still go to the arcade if I could find one, I love arcades.

Sinistar is probably my all time favorite. Then there's Zevious, Zaxxon, Wizard of Wor, Gauntlet, Spy Hunter and that old star wars vector graphics one with the snow flake laser beams .. they were were some of my favorites.

Some day I'm gonna open a burger joint and have a Burgertime machine in the front window.

This. 100%. I played it over and over again, beat it 100+ times in the arcade, worked on learning tricks to beat it without using mutant powers, and played every time I went to the mall. There was always somebody playing it-the game was never unattended. Glad it's available on IOS and my Xbox now. I previously only had an illegal MAME copy. I also miss the classic Spider-Man arcade game, Battletoads and TMNT. Xmen children of the atom was another big one. Tekken 3 gave some amusing games as well.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

And what about the rare and unheralded Simpsons arcade game? One of the best beat em ups out there for the time.

Actually, anyone remember that four-player western sidescrolling shooter game? The one where you played four cowboys going around shooting everythinghtat moved and quite a few things that didn't?

Yes! That was the one. I eventually got that on a console actually, I think SNES.

I had it on Genesis. And there was one lesson that game taught.

You do not mess with anyone in a pink sombrero, ESPECIALLY if they are Cormando and he can dual-wield rapid-firing shotguns from the hip.

Cormando...certified badass.

The genesis one was, sadly, lame.

They basically cut the game in half for hte genesis port. The SNES port just got some minor censorship going on.

You lost four of eight levels, and two of four characters :/
