Hello Dakka!

So I have wanted to do this for a fairly long time now, and never got around to it. The hobby took a backseat for awhile due to other pesky things getting in the way. But I am back into it now, and I feel, as many of you do I think, that this is a good way to stay motivated and continue making progress on my army.

I have two things I would like to point out before I begin.
1) I suck at painting well quickly, so I use QuickShade to achieve a look that I am satisfied with in a fairly decent amount of time.
2) I do not do eyes. When I paint eyes, they come out looking googly and stupid. To those of you who paint eyes well, I tip my hat to you. Good job.

The first unit I have here is my CCS:

A great deal of the time the medic just looks pretty and doesn't end up with the actual upgrade in my lists because I believe they are kind of a waste of points. I have the components/models to build a second more specialized CCS at some point which will likely be given plasma guns etc. This one is just a cheap build that supports the rest of my infantry. The flamer, well they can be used as a last ditch offensive move, or in overwatch etc. Cheap, and very useful I find.

If you would like to see it in a higher resolution, follow the link: http://i.imgur.com/RKowkvV.jpg

The second unit I am finishing off now, is my Penal Legion squad:

I must point out that I can not take full credit for those miniatures as I went scouring the internet for ideas at some point and came across this guy's stuff: http://z4.invisionfree.com/Boot_Camp/ar/t13001.htm. When I saw his legionnaires I knew at some point I would have to make some of my own. I used the part codes off ancient decal sheets I found laying around for the numbers on their guns/chest pieces (which you can't see on any of these guys very well) I just happened to have right around the number I needed The numbers on the guns and chests don't match up but I figured it could be justified that the penal legion keep track of the guns just as well as they do the prisoners, because they are worth more.

3 of those heads I used were filed down Catachan heads. Bandanas, headbands, hair all removed. Cadian arms/Guns, torsos. Catachan legs. Plasticard for the numbers on the sides of the guns/torsos.

I used the Dark tone for my CCS, and the strong tone for my Penal Legionnaires.
Hopefully later tonight I will have the rest of the legionnaires finished and I will put the rest of the pictures up.

Any questions, comments, criticisms, and tips are much appreciated!

Nice. I always liked penal legionnaires, but never got around modeling them, because I would never have used them in-game. Come to think of it, I might just start saving up for some guardsmen.
Thanks for the inspiration.

I like the way they are painted. The quickshade works well I see.

So I have an update already, as I am in the anti shine spray phase of the last few guys. I have some shots of 3 more of them.

First I will start with the custodian:

I wanted him to retain part most of the colour of the rest of my forces. I think in the fluff I am considering fleshing out, the 819th maintains it's own penal squads which was my line of thinking with his colour scheme. The modified auspex is the controller for the oh so lethal charges affixed to their collars.

The next model is the one I am most in love with out of the whole bunch. I was going through all the heads I had in my inventory (I do my best to not reuse any "unique" heads. There are a few exceptions, but I try hard to stick to that rule. So I was looking at one particular head that I have like a billion of, and I got an idea...
You may recognize it as the default sergeant head... Hair and headset removed. But now then he has no ear. Hmmm what to do?

...

Horrendous burn scar! So disfigured you can't even discern where his ear hole might have been.

All I did really was just go at his face with the tip of my knife. Just scratched and dug it out until I was satisfied.
I personally love it.

Anyway enough of all that own horn tooting, here are the latest 3 in a group shot:

Thanks man But again, I can't take all the credit. Just my version of someone else's blueprint.

As far as using them in game... Yeah for their points, on paper, they aren't worth it. But my aim with painting up my forces finally was to start with weaker units that I wouldn't normally take, and play with them. I played with only my painted units for a bit and I had a lot of fun doing this.

So expect to see some counts as ratlings, sentinels, etc.

Final update for a few days I am sure, the last 3, and a group shot.

Fantastic!!!!! Penal Legion is perfect. Great idea with the scar after chopping off the mic. Thats very creative. Might i ask what your orange mix/process is?

Thanks dude! i wish it was more complicated but the orange is straight Troll Slayer Orange over white primer, and that magical army painter strong tone did the rest. So simple yet, so effective for the effort.

So I have a question for you guys. I had my 3 counts as ratlings painted up so that their camo cloaks were a certain way. I'm not sure that I am happy with them the way they are, so i tried something different. I used a ripped piece of foam to put some extra detail on the one... Which I was not happy with either. So i scratched the extra detail off already (they were dipped already so it came off relatively easily). I want to know what you think, and what could be done better. Im leaning towards doing it again with only darker greys, no white/light grey.

Let me know what you think.

'I suck at painting well quickly'

LIES! This stuff is awesome, the shading looks really good, the flesh tones are great and they don't look speed-painted or rushed at all.

Keep up the great work!

The burn to disguise detail removal is what I did on one of my walking wounded, will be referring back to this when I paint him

That urban camo looks great! I'm looking forward to how this turns out.

If you are dipping you are probably the first person who I've seen who has done it right IMO.

Those penal legion are great, I love the use of scarred and unhelmeted heads. Very reminiscent of the artwork! I've gotta say that the warden is extra cool though. The Aquila across his shoulder is a great touch.

Guys I really appreciate all of your kind words!

I've got some more pics for ya.

A unit that I just finished up. He was mostly painted, but I weathered and then anti shined it.

Sentinel:

Yes indeed, he did get the splash on technique.

Thanks for your comments! BUT I still want to know how everyone feels about the sniper camo choices.

EDIT: Removed some pictures because they looked really off. Will retake them tomorrow and post again.

Thank you, but I will admit there are some of my earlier models that I dipped that have more pooling than I would like and that goes for the command squad. I think that was the very first one I dipped. I have done a lot of tinkering and I never rushed the process, so every dipped model has been better than the last. I have a system now, and I think the best (dip wise) haven't even been done yet.

At some point I may write up a guide to doing it properly, but probably not until I practice my techniques a little more.

Nice sentinel, looks uniform without being flat.

As for the sniper camo, it's a very tough call to make but for me the guy on the left just edges it for urban camo, the white on the guy on the right makes it look a little more like snow camo I think.

Hello all! I am the 'Co' of Scippio and Co: the girlfriend. While I have yet to endeavor to play a real game of Warhammer, I quite enjoy the hobby of painting miniatures. Last winter I happened upon the box of black reach orks and just had to paint one. One year later. I am still going.

In true female fashion, my favourites, the grots. Here are a few I want to share.

Yes, I dip too! Hope you enjoy them.

Hey guys, I figured I would add my own contribution to the thread today:

Snipers!

As you can see I stuck with the original camo scheme and didn't mess with it. I feel like it looks better since I anti shined them. They will be used as counts as ratlings, and possibly in a veteran squad down the line. I am sure I will end up making up more later at some point.

Some really nice stuff here! Definetky agree about the camo cloaks, the alternative was a better camo, but proper camo doesn't work on tiny figures, so the 'basic' camo worked much better. And the jumpsuits are a great touch. Quick query, excuse my ignorance, how do you play your penal legions? Ie what do you count them as? Or are they a new unit I've missed somewhere? Thx.

They have their own codex entry They aren't a competitive unit, but I love the flavour. Pretty much an auto include for me based on the finished product too.

Really love penal legionairs!

Orks could be darker and dirtier for my taste. More weathering and rust. Now they are well painted, but just abit to clean

I have a new update for all of you that I hope you enjoy! More Penal Legion fun, this time in the form of a custodial sentinel. I was looking around for inspiration and noticed a ton of legionnaires piloting sentinels and felt kind of like... Hmmm. Crazy convict in war machine? Seemed like a decent idea to me to have someone else there to keep them in line/threaten them/back them up on the field of battle. Thus the idea of the custodial sentinel was born.

I used a little edge highlighting, just the tiniest bit, some foam weathering, and then used the "splash on" technique with Dark Tone Quickshade.

I hope you like it.
